Highly-organized (or OC) people usually have two staples on their office tables/bedside tables/mantles: a clock and a calendar. You usually need both in order to tell the time and determine what date and day today is; it can’t be one or the other because that’s just plain incomplete. (Again, OC.)

I have some obsessive-compulsive tendencies myself, and if you can combine the two to save space, then why not? Thus comes Ken Lo’s CalenClock concept – not a very creative name as it’s just the two objects put together, but a creative concept that’s been a long time coming.

It’s pretty obvious what the CalenClock is, from the name itself. It’s also pretty self-explanatory once you see images of it.

The hour and minute hands of the clock are positioned over split-page days of the calendar, which you’re supposed to tear off with each passing day. It’s a neat idea and I’d definitely run out and buy one (or two) if it does go into production.

This calendar would make for a wonderful gift for fans of H.P. Lovecraft fans and the Cthulhu Mythos. Or naughty kids. In the case of the latter I suggest you don’t bother wrapping it – leave it open and make it so it’ll be the first thing they see when they wake up. On second thought I think Cthulhu fans would love that presentation too.

The calendar was made by David Clayton James Gassaway aka daupo. Each month features a photograph of a polymer clay sculpture finished hand-tinted with ink, also made by daupo. The sculptures all allude to tales and figures from the horrific universe.

It’s true that it will take some time before we rid ourselves of keyboards. I can actually see how the Microsoft Kinect tech might lead to an interface device that’s very futuristic and gesture-based and voice-based, which is pretty cool. As touchscreen, gestures and voices take over, what will we do with all those leftover keyboards? One thing’s for sure, some people are already reusing them in interesting ways.

We’ve previously featured earrings, textiles, skulls, jackets, and even a Rubik’s Cube made out of old keyboards, but here are a couple of new ideas.

The brazier-like top of this dress uses keyboard keys and was showcased during Ecofashion 2011, last March. It definitely looks interesting, but I wonder how comfortable it is. Then again, I don’t have to wear it.

Another unusual use for old keyboards is the The Typographic Wall Calendar. For his design, Harald Geisler arranged thousands of keys in a grid to indicate the days and day of week. It’s really cool looking, but not exactly the easiest thing on Earth to read.

While these two ideas might seem completely random, they’re actually quite appropriate, since November 15th is America Recycles Day.

Strange combination of words, I know, but Google Translate reveals that “Kocke” means cube in Slovak, so that should clear things up.

Some of these Google apps have been available offline at various times, and in limited release, but now they’re really available for everyone. You’ll need to use Google Chrome and an add-on that’s called Gmail Offline, but that’s one cool way of being able to use your Gmail pretty much in any situation.

The app is powered by HTML5, so it looks pretty snazzy and it’s based on the Gmail app for tablets. Once the app is installed, you can continue using Gmail by clicking the Gmail Offline icon and opening a new tab. This also works with Google Docs and Calendar but you can only view them, not modify them.

You can’t be online all the time, and if you use something like Inbox Zero, using offline Gmail might be a welcome addition to your workflow.

This Space Invader calendar has a single colorful invader for each day in 2011. You can either just sit back and admire them all year long, or if you’re using it “the right way,” you’ll take a Sharpie and blast away an invader-a-day as the world turns.

It’s available as a 12″ x 18″ print on heavyweight matte paper, and you can grab one over at SeeChangeDesign’s Etsy shop for $19 (USD).

The folks at Gigazine spotted this 2010 Google calendar. As in a calendar calendar, made of paper and all. The analog calendar lists events in the same style as the app, and it even has links, buttons and tabs on top. It can also be accessed offline. In fact it can only be accessed offline.

It’s from Google Japan though, so the events and the Google logos for each month refer to Japanese events/themes/culture. I’m trying to look for a Weird Gadget Day in the calendar, but I guess the Japanese celebrate that everyday.

Remind yourself to check out Gigazine for pics of the Google logos for each month. I’d rather have a real Google Earth. No wait, that would just be a globe. Google Docs? A pad of paper. Gmail! Meh, mailbox. Dammit they’re all boring.

Hey there Mom! Does your husband always seem to forget that the floor of your house isn’t his clothes hamper? Do your kids always mistake Coke for milk? Is your uncle senile? The Jenda Voice Calendar can help! Record your appointments, messages, reminders, stern warnings, threats, ultimatums, and more! Simply select the relevant date, press record then speak. The calendar’s flashing “Today” button “alerts the whole family each morning about the day’s schedule.” I’m not sure if that means that the calendar will play back your recorded messages due that day, or if the button simply flashes. Hmmm.

Either way, it’s one more nagger! It’s just like having another mother in the house. To make sure that full nagging potential is used, place the calendar where family members frequently pass by – in the bathroom, on the back door, by your son’s window, etc. The Jenda Voice Calendar is available at SkyMall for $40 (USD) + shipping. It uses 3 AAA batteries. I don’t know if they’re included.

*The mother in the picture is saying – That’s right Mary, today’s the day I file for divorce! Thanks for reminding me my little angel!”

You can also mark your video games, CDs, DVDs and gadgets with it, so you know when you bought them or when they’re due for maintenance, when to give/sell/throw them away etc. Of course you can use it to make two things one.

There’s something just so satisfying about the tactile sensation of popping bubble wrap. Now you can have a legitimate reason to pop bubbles every day, thanks to this fun bubble wrap calendar.

Each day of the year lives beneath a burstable bubble layer. As the days go by, just pop the corresponding bubble. If you happen to be away for a few days, you get the extra bonus of being able to pop a whole bunch at once.

Handmade in Brooklyn, NY, the oversize calendars come in either horizontal or vertical orientations, and measure in at substantial 48″ x 18″.

The 2009 edition of the calendar is now available, in either a paper-backed version ($29.95) or a sturdy acetate-backed version ($49.95). So get popping and head on over to the Bubble Calendar website to get yours.

The handmade calendars come in vertical or horizontal styles and cost $29.95 for paper backing, or $49.95 for clear acetate backing. They have the days of the week, with weekends in bold face, and all major US holidays marked down.

So if you’re the type of person who changes apartments biannually just for the thrill of the bubble wrap, this might be a way to get a measured daily fix o’ the pop. In my view, it certainly beats out the virtual bubble-popping experiences that are currently available. You can buy one here!

This nifty gadget from Italy’s Rotaliana combines a bunch of useful capabilities in one convenient box. The Multibook offers a lamp, clock and a handy organizer for your electronic chargers, all under the same hood.

Until you turn on the Multibook, it looks a lot like an ordinary book. But with a digital clock and calendar embedded in its spine, along with bright illumination along the sides, it’s much more than bedside reading material. In addition to the red 7-segment LEDs which power the clock/calendar, another 74 individual LEDs provide ample illumination for a bedside table or as an accent lamp.

Once you flip open the book’s cover, you’ll be able to plug in three power adapters for your mobile electronics, keeping them out of sight when the cover is shut.

The Multibook comes in four colors: black, white, lacquer red and blue, and is available from Questo Design for €152.25 (appx. $217.53 USD). Unfortunately, it’s only available in a 220-volt configuration at present, so if you live outside of Europe, you’re out of luck for now.

The display features a simulated analog clock face along with a digital readout for a secondary time zone. It’s also got day, date and alarm functions so it’ll even work as a bedside clock if you don’t mind the lack of backlighting. Plus, it’s battery-powered so you won’t have any cords running around. The World Panel Clock is available from CB2 for $24.95.

A while back, I told you about a little solar system clock from Japan. It didn’t accurately represent the positions of the planets or anything but the time of day (and I’m not even sure it did that right). If you’re looking for something with a bit more accuracy and substance, you might want to check this out.

The guys over at Watchluxus have turned me on to this amazingly intricate mechanical device which demonstrates the workings of our the Solar System in unbelievable detail. Richard Mille’s Planetarium-Tellurium provides a glimpse into the exact positions of the Earth, Venus, Mercury, the Sun and the Moon.

While it might not include all of the planets, and the Earth has been enlarged for aesthetic reasons, it’s capable of telling viewers an astounding amount of information including the current axis of the Earth, it’s position relative to the Sun, the rotation of the Moon, as well as the positions of Venus and Mercury among other things. It’s also an extremely sophisticated clock and perpetual calendar, which can even tell the current signs of the Zodiac.

Mille enlisted the counsel of a renowned astronomer-physicist to help with all of the calculations that were needed in order to accurately convert these movements into a mechanical system. To put the precision into perspective, the least precise calculation is the current axis of the Earth, which can get off by plus or minus 1° every 7.7 years. Most of the other calculations are far more stable, like the rotation of the Earth around the Sun, which should be accurate within 1° for up to 2 million years!

From what I’ve been able to glean, Mille actually plans on producing these clocks for purchase, although I haven’t been able to find out any details on that yet. Given the insane amount of detail and fine craftsmanship, I’d expect that you’d be able to buy a really nice car or a small condo for less than what these will ultimately sell for.

This clock kind of reminds me of watching those information screens on Bloomberg TV. LEXON’s Status digital wall alarm clock lets you check the time, date, day and weather forecast all at a quick glance.

By combining all of these features onto a single large LCD screen, the Status clock gives you a heads-up display of all this information at once. It even reports both indoor and outdoor weather conditions thanks to a wireless remote temperature and barometric sensor.

While it’s designed for wall mounting, I also think it would look really good on a mantel or a console table. To give you a sense of size, the clock measures in at 14.25″(w) x 4.5″(h) x 1.25″(d), so it looks substantial, while maintaining a slim profile. Plus, since it runs on batteries, you won’t have to deal with any cords.

The LEXON Status clock is available from Singulier for €99 (appx. $135 USD.)

Designer Susanna Hertrich created this unique calendar that gradually rids itself of the previous day by shredding them into oblivion.

The Chrono_Shredder combines a calendar, clock and shredder into a single device that gradually scrolls through the days, eating them away with the shredder. According to the artist:

The Chrono_Shredder’s function is not to show the current moment, like a calendar. Instead, it shows the nearest future (the next day) — and all the time that has past from the time the device has been switched on. Whilst you spend your time in hibernation — the Chrono_Shredder messes up your space with wasted time!

Now that’s deep. Regardless, I think it’s a pretty cool idea. All she needs to do is use hamster power to operate it, and I’ll buy one.
