Cameras in vehicles have started to catch on in parts of the world as a way of documenting traffic accidents. While this particular camera is designed for just that purpose, I could see it being used to stitch together some other interesting video content as well.

Instead of just a single camera that captures traffic in front of you, this portable device has a pair of swiveling digital cameras which can capture images in front and behind you. Or to your left and to your right, or just about any other combination of angles. Each camera can rotate a full 180 degrees.

If you do chose to use it in your car, it has a handy “SOS” button, which automatically makes sure that video from 10 seconds before and after an accident will be saved to memory. A G-force sensor also does the same in the event that it detects a crash.

Video resolution is 720p (1280×720), and it captures H.264 video from each camera lens at up to 30fps. In adddition, it can grab 1600×1200 stills (appx. 2 megapixels). Also built into the camera is a 2.7-inch widescreen LCD, which lets you view one, two or both cameras at the same time.

One other nifty feature is a set of four infrared LEDs around each lens, so you can use it to capture in the dark too. It’s even got a mini-HDMI output so you can view content on a big screen too. At least they’re nice enough to include the mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter in the box.

Content is stored onto an SDHC card (not included), and can also be output to your computer via the USB port. The Dual Camera DVR also comes with a suction cup mount for use on your windshield or other smooth surface. While it’s designed to run using you car’s 12V cigarette charger, it has a built-in rechargeable battery. It also comes with a remote control, so you can activate recording remotely.

One thing to keep in mind if you are planning on using this thing for more artistic endeavors. One camera captures a 120 degree wide angle field, while the other captures a more telephoto image, as is shown in the video sample below:

If it wasn’t obvious enough from the watermarks on the images, the Dual Camera DVR is available from Brando, where it sells for $116 (USD).

If you are in the market for a new action cam that can be worn or mounted for all sorts of sports activities, Swann has a new one you might like. The new camera looks a lot like the GoPro cameras already on the market with a key difference. The Swann Freestyle HD has an integrated LCD screen.

The built-in display is 1.5-inches diagonal, and lets you see what you are recording. The camera can shoot 1080p HD video (at 30fps) and 8MP still photos. It also has 3x digital zoom and stereo sound. Video is stored on microSD cards and the camera has an internal rechargeable battery which should provide 2.5 hours on a full charge. The cam also comes with a wireless remote that lets you turn the camera on and off at a distance.

The camera doesn’t appear to have a dedicated suction cup mount for cars, but it comes with several mounting brackets to choose from, including a helmet bracket. A waterproof plastic case is included and protects the camera up to 65-feet deep. It should be available any day now over at the Swann website, and sells for $279.99 (USD).

I have been using a GoPro HD Hero Motorsports edition camcorder for a long time now for filming the fun I have down at the race track. The little cameras shoot great video and still shots, even if the menu of the original is hard to use. GoPro has announced a new version of that camera called the HD Hero2.

The new camera is improved all around, and one of the big new features is an easy to use plain language menu system so you don’t need the instructions to change modes. The new camera also has a professional 11MP image sensor, two times faster image processor, a two times sharper glass lens, and pro-level low light performance

The new camera also gets some new video modes with Full 170º, Medium 127º, Narrow 90º FOV in 1080p and 720p Video. The camera can also now record in new faster fps modes for slow motion video up to 120fps.

The Hero2 camera can also snap an 11MP still photo every half-second in timelapse mode. The coolest new feature is that the HD Hero2 will work with a new GoPro app for letting you see what the camera is shooting. The HD Hero2 comes in outdoor, motorsports, and surf editions for $299(USD) each.

There are a bunch of people today that don’t care for tons of zoom and fancy features on their camcorder. Many folks just want a cheap and compact camera that is good enough for uploading to Facebook or YouTube. Kodak has a new digital camcorder that might be perfect for folks like this called the Kodak PLAYFULL Waterproof Camera.

The (woefully mispelled) PLAYFULL comes in black or white colors and is expected to ship this October 28th. The little camera is waterproof to 10-feet. It is dust proof and can survive drops of 5-feet onto plywood. It will come in a version with a 4GB SDHC card and a version without. The camera has 18MB of internal storage and supports SDHC cards up to 32GB. The digital zoom is 2x and it can shoot 1MP still photos and video in 720p resolution at 30 fps.

The screen also offers something called “Glare Shield” which is supposed to adjust the LCD so you can actually view it in bright sunlight – a major problem for many portable cameras today. It also has integrated effects, including sepiatone, B&W, high saturation, and 1970′s film. It has a lithium polymer battery and an integrated USB plug for charging and synchronizing content online. The version with the 4GB card will cost $119.95 (USD) and the version without is $99.95.

My wife and I are opposites when it comes to getting ready for somewhere we have to be. If I tell you I’ll be ready in 15-minutes I am generally padding the number a bit to be on time. My wife on the other hand says “I need a few minutes” and hours later you are lucky to be going. That means that we always end up in the back of the room at events like school plays and graduations where we can only make out blurs.

That makes recording video and actually seeing our kids nearly impossible. If you have a significant other that is like my wife you need the Sony Handycam DCR-SX21E or the DCR-SR21E. Both other cameras have ultra-zoom with 57x optical zoom and digital zoom bringing the total to 67x. That would certainly let you get close to your subject from the back of the room.

Both of the cameras have the same specs with a 2.7-inch LCD, Steadyshot stabilization, and lots of other features. The only difference between them is that the SX21E only stores to memory cards and the SR21E also stores to an 80GB HDD. Both have upload software onboard too. The cameras will ship in early September in Europe at an undisclosed price. No word yet on a U.S. or international release.

The Sony Handycam HDR-PJ50V isn’t the first camera to have a built-in projector, that was 2009′s Nikon Coolpix S1000PJ. In addition to capturing 1080p HD 60fps or 24fps video, it and it can shoot 7.1 MP still photos. Despite the resolution of the camera though, the LED-backed projector has a paltry 640×360 resolution, with just 10 lumens of brightness.

The Handycam also comes with a sizeable 220 GB hard drive, Sony G 30mm lens, a 12× optical /160× digital zoom, and Dolby Digital 5.1 channel sound. Storage is expandable with memory sticks.

You can get the HDR-PJ50V camera now for just under $1000 (USD), so it doesn’t come cheap, but it does come with a lot of features.

There is no shortage of wearable camcorders on the market today with things like the GoPro and Replay cameras that allow you to wear a camera to get your view of what is happening when you do things. If you want a wearable camcorder that is a little more discrete and don’t mind wearing some ugly eyeglasses, the ZionEyez HD video recording glasses might be just what you need.

These glasses look like the old 80′s shades that were popular when I was a kid. The little sensor is right in front of the right earpiece on the front of the glasses. That sensor records in 720p HD resolution.

The glasses also have a hidden microphone and will offer WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity as well. The recorded video is saved to 8GB of internal storage.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The battery is good for three hours of recording, which is actually pretty good. There is a microUSB port hidden on one of the side logos for sharing and shooting video over to your computer. The only downside (other than the questionable looks of the glasses) is that the things cost $199.99 (USD). If you pre-order though, you’ll get them for $149.99.

Extreme and action sports are very cool and I like some of the activities that fall into the category. I am not into skateboarding because I would crack off my coccyx in about 2 seconds. I do, however, get into motorsports like road courses and autocross though. Those things are particularly well suited to recording so you can show off how fast you can go around the cones or the track.

For any action sport, you need a camcorder that’s up to the task. It needs to be small and very strong. An action sports camcorder needs a bunch of different mounting options too. I usually use a GoPro camera for my racing stuff, but this new Replay XD1080 camcorder looks pretty appealing. The little camera looks more like a flashlight than a camcorder and it is waterproof and impact resistant.

The camera records in 1080p HD resolution and offers other resolutions too. It can record at 30 fps in 1080p or up to 60 fps in 720p resolution. The camera has a 135-degree field of view that doesn’t cause distortion and can even shoot still shots in a time-lapse mode with shots every 3, 5, 15, or 30 seconds.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The camera has an HDMI output, supports live streaming, and it has an integrated mic. The price of the new camera is unknown, but the original ReplayXD sold for about $190. Replay will start taking pre-orders for the XD1080 on June 10th here.

I used to know a guy whose lifelong dream was to go to Africa and go on a safari to see the animals. I always thought the dude was crazy; I am not going anywhere that has animals that can eat me. Photographer Roger de la Harpe lacks the same reservations about Africa that I have and he took his wife and niece to Africa with him to shoot photos of lions for a book on endangered species.

While rolling around in the Tswalu Kalahari Game Reserve in South Africa he spied some lionesses in the path ahead. If it were me, I would have put it in reverse and left fearing the evil lionesses would bite the tires off the truck and wait until dark to come back and eat me feet- first. Ole’ Roger instead climbed out of the truck, left a camera in the path, and ran away to see what he could record.

The lionesses strolled up to the camera, licked it a few times and then tried to eat it. When the thing didn’t just crunch up one of the lionesses carried the camera off. The image you see above is the view from the lion’s mouth, and below is the actual video captured when the lions took the camera for a stroll:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I bet that lion was licking the human residue off the camera. Roger then crept back into the brush and retrieved the camcorder after the lion left it. Apparently, the lions were only 75 meters away when he went to get the camera back.

All of the people out there that like to do crazy sports or extreme sports and want to be able to record their antics in a first person view need some sort of camcorder. The best type of camera is something small and rugged that can survive the inevitable drop or crash. A new camcorder has turned up called the Contour+ that should work for just about anyone.

The Contour+ sells for $499.99 (USD) and comes with the camera, 2GB SD card, USB, HDMI cable and three different mounts for securing the camera to stuff. The camera supports full 1080p resolution video at 30fps, and 720p at up to 60fps. It also has a super wide-angle lens that can be easy adjusted by turning a ring around the end of the lens up to 170-degrees.

The camera also streams video to Bluetooth devices with an app available for the iPhone and Android smartphones. That will let you see what you are recording while you are out and about without having to wait until you get home and just hope you got the shot. The camera also has a GPS receiver to track your speed and elevation and record that data as you go.

Hammacher Schlemmer is one of those sites that has some really cool gadgets and gizmos, but they are often crazy expensive. A new gadget has been added to the store that isn’t so expensive, cool called The Camcorder Projector. You should be able to figure out what it does just from the name.

The Camcorder Projector is actually the 3M Shoot ‘n Share CP40, a small handheld camcorder that records in 720p HD resolution. It can also shoot 8MP still images as well. If you want to share the video and images you took with the camcorder with a group, you can use the integrated projector. That projector will throw an image up to 65-inches wide on the wall or other surface.

The catch here is that the projector has only 12 lumens and projects at just a 640 x 480 resolution. You will get more lumens from the sun reflecting off my lily white arse. If you plan to see the video or images, you will need a very dark room. If you want to know how well it works before you buy one, CrunchGear reviewed one a little while back. You can order the camcorder up right now for $299.95 (USD).

The gang over at Liquid Image has been making goggles for scuba diving for years that have a camcorder inside, and they have a line of goggles just for skiing and other snow sports that have a camcorder as well. The latest new goggles from Liquid Image are for those off-road types.

The goggles look like the average goggles that a person on a dirt bike or ATV would wear to protect their eyes with the notable exception of the camcorder between the eyes. That camcorder has a 136-degree field of view so it sees all the rider sees. It camera records at 1080p resolution 30fps video glory.

If you want slow motion playback you can get 720p resolution with 60fps. The camcorder can also shoot 12MP still shots and the content is stored to a microSD card. The goggles ship with a 4GB card and support up to 32GB cards. Pricing and availability are unannounced at this time, but if you’re interested, you can contact the Liquid Image sales department at sales(at)liquidimageco.com.

If you are the early adopter sort, you know being the first to get your hands on a gadget that is the world’s first this-or-that is never cheap, and often that stuff you pay out the nose for just doesn’t work like you expect. JVC has announced a new and very expensive camcorder that is the first consumer camcorder in the world to offer 1920×1080 (1080i) 3D recording.

The camera is called the JVC Hellaspensive (ok, it’s really called the GS-TD1) and it will land in March for $1999.95 (USD). For that much scratch you get a camcorder with dual 3.32MP image sensors and lenses for recording 3D in full HD. Those fancy lenses get 5x optical zoom and the 3.5-inch touchscreen pops out of the side for watching your 3D content.

The screen doesn’t need glasses either so you won’t look like a tool at your kids soccer game watching your playback. The camera supports 3D time-lapse recording and stores video to 64GB of internal memory. That storage can be expanded with SD cards as well. It can also capture “3D Sound”, whatever that is.

If you are the sort that goes to a lot of concerts and records them, you have probably noticed that the audio on most camcorders is far from as good as the quality of the video. A company called Zoom has been making some very nice dual microphone audio recorders for a long time for recording music and speech along with any other spoken word thing a geek might want to record.

The company took the mics and audio circuitry from that audio recorder, crammed them inside a video camera back in October, and offered up most of the details on the thing at the time. The recorder is called the Q3HD Handy Video Recorder and it has 1080p resolution at 30 fps recording. It can also record 720p at both 30fps and 60fps. The video resolutions are common today on all sorts of camcorders, but the Q3HD has impressive sound. The microphones record sound in 24-bit/96KHz quality. The device has three aperture settings for different lighting conditions and has an integrated USB cable and HDMI output.

Here’s an example clip shot with the Q3HD:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Clearly, the audio is much better than your cellphone can shoot, but the video seems about average. You can see more example footage shot with the device here. It is available to buy right now and will cost you $299.99 (USD) over on Amazon.

I am a huge fan of the tiny wearable camcorders that GoPro offers. I have one of their small GoPro Motorsports Hero HD camcorders that I use for car reviews and the thing is great. It’s tiny, has long battery life, records high-resolution video and has great mounting options.

The downside to that camera and the others on the market is that they are expensive with the high-end offerings at nearly $300. GoPro has unveiled a new cheaper camcorder called the HD Hero 960. The camera maxes out at a resolution of 1280 x 960 and supports 720p HD whereas the other cams from GoPro do 1080 – but it will save you some money.

The 960 can also shoot still photos and has a waterproof case. The camera ships with a head mount that will also work for helmet recording. GoPro also ships it with a curved adhesive surface mount and a flat surface mount as well. One other item of note: the 960 lacks the expansion port the higher-end cameras offer so the LCD back or extra battery pack that are available will not work with it.

The 960 can be purchased right now for $179(USD).

They say that necessity is the mother of invention and so the story goes with the Rampant View helmet cam system. A guy and his son wanted a cheap helmet cam for a ski trip so they cobbled up something from foam and other materials to hold the 5th gen iPod nano that has a camera inside.

The product we see today isn’t made from foam and duct tape, but it’s pretty darned cool. The thing looks sort of like a welders mask with a space for the nano to fit securely inside. The nano can still record video with the camera and back exposed.

An elastic strap holds the whole thing to your helmet and the material the thing is made from appears to be sturdy enough to prevent your iPod from dying in the event you eat it while recording. The strap weighs 5 ounces and has a headphone pass-through so you can listen to the audio. Here’s an example of the video quality, in case you were wondering how well it works…

Not too shabby, eh? You can get the Rampant View Strap right now for $34.99(USD) including shipping.

I have recorded my share of video on some of the lower priced camcorders on the market and the video quality is usually very good, with HD resolution being common these days. What is also common is for you to have nice video quality and then have sound that is flat and not up to the same standards as the video.

Of all the camcorders on the market the Flip line are some of the most popular. They have HD resolutions and if the sound quality isn’t good enough for you, Blue Microphones has a new accessory for any Flip camcorder with the FlipPort.

The Mikey for Flip plugs into the FlipPort on the bottom of the camcorders and offers much better sound with Blue’s premium stereo condensers. The mic gets power from a AAA battery and has an integrated tripod mount. The Mikey has automatic sensitivity selection along with a switch or loud setting. Pricing is unknown at this time.

Perfect for both voyeurs and narcissists, this new camera lets you shoot POV digital video pretty much anywhere you go, any time.

The Looxcie looks sort of like a Bluetooth headset, but there’s a tiny video camera at the tip, which can capture all the random moments of your life. And actually, that part about looking like a Bluetooth headset – the Looxcie actually functions as one, pairing with your smartphone to make calls as well as to transmit video to it. The camera is always on, buffering the last 5 hours of stuff that happened to you. So if something exciting just happened – like you got into a shouting match over the temperature of your Latte with the Starbucks barista – you’ll be able to share that instantly. Or you can capture yourself at the urinal. Your choice.

With the Looxcie Android app (versions coming for iOS and Windows Mobile eventually, too), you can capture the last 30 seconds of video, send it via Bluetooth to the phone and instantly share it online or via e-mail. You can also use the app as a wireless display so you can see exactly what you’re capturing, but if you’re doing that, you might as well just use the camera built into your cellphone, right? Although your cellphone can’t capture things that already happened, can it? Of course, you have a much better shot of finding interesting footage by scrubbing back through the last 5 hours of your day and cutting up custom clips – all of which you can do in the Looxcie app.

Probably the biggest issue with the Looxcie is the fact that it only captures 480×320 video, and only at 15fps. Why they went with such a low resolution in this day and age is anyone’s guess, especially with most mobile phones sporting multi-megapixel video cameras these days. Perhaps it’s because of how fast you can stream video over Bluetooth, or just a storage limitation due to Looxcie’s size. Here’s a sample video captured with the Looxcie, in case you’re wondering what the quality is like:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Expect the Looxcie to show up over at Amazon for $199 (USD) sometime in the near future.

I have to watch way more kids shows than an adult should have too. It’s got to the point where I really like SpongeBob and I know much more about the goings on in the world of iCarly and Big Time Rush than any man should. A new realtime broadcast device called miniCASTER has surfaced that can turn you into the real iCarly.

The device connects to any camcorder and can broadcast the video you take to the web in realtime. The miniCASTER connects to your camera and can even transmit video in HD resolution. If you don’t want your own wacky web show, the broadcast device can also be used to broadcast news or even put your kids football game online live for people who live far away to watch.

The obvious drawback to the miniCASTER is the price. The analog connection entry model is $1399 (USD) and the high-end SDI version is $1999. The video can be streamed online using a landline, cellular network, or satellite and the maker says an hour of video streaming will cost about $10.

The Sony Bloggie series offers two new compact digital camcorders, each capable of grabbing gorgeous 1080p video at 30fps, and can also shoot 5-megapixel stills. The MHS-CM5 (MSRP $200 USD) features a 5x optical zoom lens and a pistol grip body with a flip out 2.5″ LCD viewfinder.

The MHS-PM5 (MSRP $170) forgoes the optical zoom, and instead provides 4x digital zoom and a fixed 2.4″ viewfinder. Personall, I’d spend the extra 30 bucks for the real zoom lens. However, the cheaper model sports a funky 270-degree reversable lens that lets you shoot yourself, as well as a $189 version which includes a lens add-on that lets you shoot 360-degree panoramic videos and bundles a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo card.

Both Bloggie cams are available now over at the Sony Store, with the MHS-CM5 shipping now, and the MHS-PM5 models shipping early in February.
