OrigAudio (as in “origami + audio”) speakers are perfect for trips to the beach, or for whenever you just want to share music without much hassle. Let’s face it, a couple of 3.15″ 1-watt speakers won’t satisfy audiophiles and they’re definitely not good enough for parties, but the fact that they’re foldable and don’t need a power source – not a single battery or USB cable needed – means that they’re perfectly portable. Just don’t get them wet.

OrigAudio rides on the “green” bandwagon because they’re made of recycled craft paper, but you can have ones made of cardboard or coated plastic as well. You can choose from several neat stock designs, or you can send custom designs to be printed on the speakers. OrigAudio also comes in a triangular shape if you really want to have a unique set of speakers.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You can order a set of two speakers at OrigAudio’s online store for only $20 (USD), or you can get a 6-pack – a total of 12 speakers for $80. As I said, OrigAudios don’t need a power source; just plug them into any device that has a headphone jack and you’re good to go. Check out a review of the OrigAudio on YouTube, and skip to about four minutes in to hear them at work. More pics of the speakers are available at OrigAudio’s Flickr page.

It does look like the pouch for french fries used by fast food chains, but the FireScuba could be one life-saving product. While it may not be as efficient as a gas mask or smoke hood, it’s main advantage is its size and form.

I think I can fit a couple of these in my wallet. As DVICE’s Michael Trei said, the best smoke hood won’t be able to help if you don’t have it with you when a fire breaks out. The FireScuba is made of nothing but cardboard and a carbon filter, so not only will it be easier to carry, I’m sure it’s also a hell of a lot cheaper to make than a gas mask.

Obviously it still needs to be tested, but the designer is onto something here; I hope the FireScuba becomes an actual product. I guess it all depends on how efficient the carbon filter is in trapping smoke.

From the outside, this cardboard box sure doesn’t look like a very nice place to seek shelter. But one look inside, and you’ll see that the Five-Stars Cardboard Hotel is a luxurious resort, crafted from paper.

The design team of Keung Caputo created four foldable suites, each with a cardboard bed, pillow and intricate cardboard details, cut with lasers and backlit with LEDs. Of course, the biggest problem with the cardboard hotel is that while your upper body is protected from the elements (unless it rains), your legs stick out. Eh, whaddya want from a cardboard box?

Each of the four cardboard suites features a different theme, and a welcoming, warm environment for its guests. I think I’d stay in this neon purple room with a cut out of what looks like the Taco Bell chihuahua.

According to the artists “Once (a room is) chosen, the selected hotel suite will be set up on location. Within seconds, what looked like a stack of cardboard, turns into a habitation.”

The Five-Stars Cardboard Hotel was recently featured at New York’s Miyako Yoshinaga gallery, but has since moved on. If you’re lucky, you might find the suites at highway underpass near you.

Made by Taiwanese furniture designer Chishen Chiu, the Flexiblelove line of recycled wood and cardboard furniture stretches and bends so that you can use it to seat one person…

…or a whole group. In fact the flexiblelove 8, as its name implies, can fit up to 8 people, while the flexiblelove 16 can accommodate up to 16 people! A 20-seater will be released next year. Then next next year they’ll release the flexblelove moviehouse, a 300-seater, then next next next year the flexiblelove stadia, a 22,000-seater. The previous sentence is of course filled with lies.

Don’t believe it? Watch this:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Flexiblelove’s honeycomb design is the key to its stretching and bending abilities.

Since it’s made out of cardboard, not even the unique design can prevent it from turning into Soggylove if it gets wet.

If you live in Taiwan, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Portugal, you can purchase the Flexiblelove 16 and Flexiblelove 8 online; just hit up the respective websites listed here. The smaller, 8-seater Flexiblelove 8 sells for £220 (appx. $350 USD) while Flexiblelove 16 sells for £390 ($620 USD) at the Flexiblelove UK online store. If you’re not in any of the places listed above, send a message to intl@flexiblelove.com for help on purchasing.

I think it looks neat and all, but I don’t think I would ever drop $350 for a cardboard chair.

I’m not sure if PETA would approve of Sarah Dery’s mousetrap design. On one hand, it provides captured mice with a decent resting place, and it makes it easy for you to toss them out the window while shrieking give them a proper burial.

On the other hand, the mouse wouldn’t need the coffin if not for the coffin itself. Hmmm.

You know you’ve got a truly badass weapon on your hands when it looks amazing despite lens flare (and being made of cardboard). Through a few mutilated limbs in there or something and you’ve got a Saw movie pretty authentic recreation.

But what painstaking re-creation of a gaming weapon would be complete without a YouTube video documenting the process? This one. So here’s your video.

If you’re looking for something both unique and somewhat green to protect your laptop and you happen to have £180+ (appx. $265 USD) lying around to spend on your little heart’s desire, you might just be interested in Giles Miller’s amazing cardboard laptop case design. If, like me, you aren’t exactly flush with cash for things you don’t need, it might be time to start learning how to shape any leftover corrugated cardboard you have around the house.

It’s not hard to see why these cardboard cases go for so much; the subtle design is understated brilliance. But in my experience, corrugated cardboard isn’t the most resilient material around–and imagine getting it wet–and it would really be a heartbreaking experience to bend or tear your very expensive designer laptop case. Being an artist, and thus able to make these things yourself, must be a real bonus.

A personalized case, by the way, is even more expensive, alas. Guess the best things in life aren’t so free after all.

According to the builder, the guts of the old Pentium 3 tower are being used to power this Ubuntu Linux computer. He claims that the system really does work, and despite its cardboard construction, it has yet to spontaneously burst into flames.

I’d be happy to send him a lighter and some accelerant if that helps him achieve his goal faster.

Now I’ve seen some cheap speakers in my days, but even the chintziest ones I’ve seen were at least made out of plastic. Not these. These ones are fabricated from thick paper stock.

Xenics Music Cube M speakers offer up some truly low-fidelity sound thanks to their flimsy cardboard construction. Heck, they don’t even come assembled. You have to carefully fold the paper boxes and insert all the little tabs to but them together.

Once complete, they’re not likely to crank out much, since they’re not even amplified. You simply plug them in to your MP3 player’s headphone jack, and that’s all the power you’ll get. All that, and a frequency response range that’s probably not much better than your typical cordless phone.

If you’re really dying for the novelty of paper speakers, you’ll need to do a little translation, since it looks they’re only currently available in Korea.

While most portable stereos aren’t particularly waterproof, this one doesn’t stand a chance in a rainstorm. The Mini Cardboard Boom Box comes folded flat and ready for assembly. It runs on two AA batteries, and connects to any MP3 player with a standard 3.5mm stereo jack. But it looks best with an iPod sitting in its “dock.”

The guys over on 7Gadgets dug this up on the Suck UK website. I wasn’t able to find a price for it, so I’m not sure if it’s even for sale yet.

Sure, you could go spend hundreds of dollars on one of those fancy robot kits, or you could be a cheap bastard like me, and pick up one of these.

At just 12 bucks, you can’t expect much. The TechnoRobot kit is a do-it-yourself robot that’s made mostly out of cardboard and held together by scotch tape. A cheapie motor, some plastic gears and some rubber bands help the ‘bot to mosey along.

TechnoRobot certainly isn’t going to win any awards for looks, but it’s really meant as a way for kids to learn a little bit about the basics of robotics.
