The NEStalgic shop collaborated with artist Nick Robalik to create a Fallout NES cartridge, which will surely fetch a vault full of bottle caps in the post-nuclear world.

As with the other 72pins cartridges, this is fully functional and does contain a NES game, just not a Fallout NES game. It does come with a plastic hook so you can mount it on your wall right out of the box.

The Fallout NES cartridge is available from the 72pins online store for $16(USD). Supplies are limited so don’t delay. You can also learn a bit about the making of the art on Nick’s blog. 72pins should team up with Eric Ruth to make a batch of cartridges that actually contain retro versions of modern games.

Experienced shoppers buy their holiday gifts early, so if you’re looking for a unique and memorable gift for an old school gamer, you better get one of Retrozone’s Xmas cartridges. These are original cartridges for the NES and SNES (or Famicom and Super Famicom, if you want to be OG) with Christmas-themed games. Best of all, they have “colorful blinky lights” built-in!

The 8-bit NES Xmas cartridge contains a game called Fireplace Bash, a 4-player game where the objective is to bash everyone else’s fireplaces. Think Battle City but simpler.

The 16-bit SNES Xmas cartridge on the other hand has a game called Christmas Craze, which seems like a platformer.

The lights in both cartridges change depending on what’s happening in the games, but they’ll happily blink and shine for you even if you don’t play the games. You’ll still have to plug them in to their respective consoles though. Colorful blinky lights need power.

You can order the Xmas cartridges from Retrozone for $39 (USD) each. You can also have text displayed in the games and printed on an accompanying card for an additional $6. Not only are these unique yet affordable gifts, GameSniped says these are quickly becoming collector’s items, so buy them NAO.

I think the Starship Enterprise is the best one, because the entire thing is made up out of cartridges. For all the others, the carts really just serve as scenes for the toy figures to hang out in. Still, one with the theater and all the action heroes is pretty cool, and certainly a much better use for leftover ink cartridges than throwing them in the trash.

We’ve seen NES controllers turned into flash drives and NES cartridges used as cases for external hard drives. But neither of those mods are as awesome – or as ridiculous – as what Instructables user Ed Lewis made: a NES cartridge flash drive with a complementary NES console USB port. Yes, port, as in there’s only one USB connector inside the huge console.

The best part about the hack is that it’s relatively simple. Basically all you have to do is open up the cartridge case, take out the board and make a gap for a flash drive, then glue the drive inside. Then open up the console, cut a hole in the middle of the cartridge connector for the flash drive to slide in, and another hole at the back of the console for the USB cable.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

+1 for the NES cartridge icon for the flash drive. Check out Instructables for more details, or maybe you can try making a NES console with multiple USB ports – two ports for controller flash drives, and then one more for a cartridge.

They guys at Hyperkin keep outdoing themselves with their line of retro consoles. The latest console, called the Retro N 3, can play games from the original Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis in a single system.

Better yet, the Retro N 3 can play games from their original cartridges, rather than running emulated ROMs, so you can just dust off your old carts from the closet (or eBay) and play the originals as they were originally intended.

While the N 3 provides ports to connect controllers from each of the classic systems, each system also includes a pair of wireless controllers which sorta resemble the 6-button Genesis controller. The Retro N 3 is available in either red or grey color schemes, and can be ordered over at Hyperkin’s online store for $69.99 (USD).

If you regularly use an inkjet printer, you can certainly try and recycle your cartridges by refilling them with more ink. But get real – most of the time, your empties just end up in the dumpster. Not so with these clever lighting fixtures made from the discarded shells of EPSON inkjet cartridges.

These lighting fixtures are first scrubbed of ink, then drilled, dremel-ed out and assembled into composite hanging lamps or individual ink cart lamps.

They’re available as single lamps ($30 USD), 4-cartridge box pendants ($45) or as an 8-cartridge chandelier ($150). Colors include matte black, cyan, light-cyan, magenta, light-magenta, yellow, light-black, and light-light-black depending on your mood. Personally, I’m always running out of magenta. I’m not quite sure what that says about me.

Now I don’t know what’s going in Durham, North Carolina, but I found variants of these lamps from two different Durham-based Etsy shops – LowellAndLouise and boxlightbox, both of whom are selling what look like the same ink cartridge lamps. I don’t know if these are the same guys, had the same idea at the same exact time, or if somebody just swiped somebody else’s idea. Whatever the case, I think they look cool.

Die-hard Final Fantasy VII fans may be clamoring for a current gen version of the classic RPG, but apparently in China, people are buying the remaining units of NESes in the world, and so de-makes are all the rage. Speaking of de-makes, the 8-bit Left 4 Dead‘s got nothing on the 8-bit Biohazard, aka Resident Evil.

As if things weren’t bizarre enough, someone is selling these NES – I repeat NES, Famicom, 8-bit, Final Fantasy 1 – “pirate originals” on eBay, with starting bids at $45 (USD). That someone is eBay user andrew-cole.

I must say that it’s a surprisingly faithful de-make.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Another classic, Chrono Trigger, also gets pirate-originaled:

I thought that since it was first released on the SNES that the NES port wouldn’t be that much of a downgrade. Unfortunately for our eyes, I was wrong:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Good lord. Worst choice of colors ever. But the worst of the worst has to be this godawful pretender:

This premise sets such high expectations. I was actually interested to see how an 8-bit Diablo II would look like. Would it be a side-scroller, an even more primitive version of Golden Axe? Or would it be more like Wizardry?

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Or it could be a generic RPG with no relation to Diablo II at all, except for the probability that Diablo himself might have made the game. As I said, andrew-cole is selling these and more NES de-makes like Dragon Quest VIII and Megaman X on eBay.

If you’re feeling unusually decadent today, you might want to buy one of these just for the heck of it. But I sincerely hope that Tyrael descends from the heavens and lands at the speed of light on your heathen ass if you so much as consider buying that Diablo de-make. Andrew-cole should pay you to play that game.

Penney Design has put a really cool spin on movie poster art. It’s kind of cool to see how these movie concepts are just reduced to a few simple pixels on an Atari old video game box.

I love the Snakes on a Plane game cartridge. The whole movie is boiled down to playing the classic Snake game.

It’s kind of cool. Prison Break is Breakout. It’s true that they’ve been breaking out from different prisons for four seasons now. Avatar and Cloverfield are also classics. Although Penney’s version of Avatar isn’t in 3D.

Do you still have your old NES console? Do you love electronic music? Then I know what you’re getting for Christmas. This new cartridge for the old Nintendo Entertainment System features a bunch of new “chiptunes” by electronic recording artist Animalstyle (or is that 4NIM4L57YL3?)

The TELETIME cartridge features ten original electronic compositions that use the NES’ inimitable sound chip, accompanied by a variety of entertaining and whimsical 8-bit pixel graphics like the one shown above. Here’s a sneak preview of the cart in action…

Animalstyle plans on releasing the cartridge in the next couple of weeks, and is accepting pre-orders now for just $30 (USD). He plans on making only about 50 of these suckers, so if you want one, you’d better get crackin’ and place your order now.

The first time I saw an NES gaming system built into an NES cartridge, I thought it was pretty sweet. Until I saw this one, which totally outdoes the original.

Inspired by an earlier NESp (Ninendo Entertainment System portable) mod by darkeru, modder airz managed to put a completely playable game system, including a 2.8-inch LCD screen and original NES controller buttons into an old Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt combo cartridge. The broken off cartridge connector board at the bottom is nice touch, too.

Now, you may ask how he fit an entire NES inside a cartridge – the answer is simple – airz’ NESp isn’t a real Nintendo console. It’s actually one of those cheap Chinese PMPs that happens to be able to emulate NES games. But that doesn’t make it any less cool in my book. The way I figure it, that just means that he doesn’t need to carry around a bunch of other cartridges to play games. It can also play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games as an added bonus. And movies, MP3s and even receives FM radio to boot. Airz even preserved the portable’s video-out port so he can play games on a television too.

Here’s a vid clip of the Airz’ NESp in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

From the looks of the video, though, it sounds like someone needs to increase the framerate skip on their NES emulator. Mario seems to be playing just a wee bit faster than the original.

Here’s a great external hard drive for fans of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. These NES cartridges have had their guts ripped out and replaced with high-capacity modern hard drives.

The guys over at 8-Bit Memory take retro NES carts and retrofit them with USB hard drives that you can use with any modern PC or Mac.

I think I’d load up all of my favorite 8-bit emulators and games onto the drive so I could take them anywhere I go. As an added bonus, you won’t have to blow on the edge of this cartridge to get your games to load.

The basic model ($119.99 USD) comes with a 250GB hard drive, but 8-Bit Memory will make custom drives with capacities of 320GB, 400GB, 500GB or 750GB for an extra charge. And they’ll be happy to dig up your favorite NES game to build a custom enclosure just for you. Head on over to 8-Bit Memory’s Etsy shop to get your hands on one.

Want to quickly flip between your favorite games on your Nintendo DS Lite? Check out this handy accessory that lets you choose from 3 different games with just the flick of a switch.

The BLAZE 3-in-1 game selector has triple cartridge bays, and a single ribbon connector that plugs into your DS’ cartridge slot. Sure, it adds a little bulk to your once svelte DS Lite, but it sure is nice being able to choose from multiple games without having to carry around an additional case. Once snapped onto the case of your DS Lite, you can flip between games by moving the switch on the top of the case. One of 3 green LEDs lights up to indicate which game is currently active.

It’s not clear if the 3-in-1 selector will work on the DSi too, but it’s definitely says it’s designed for the DS Lite. You can grab one over at SuperUFO for about $13 (USD). Now if only they made one that held 50 games, I’d be set. Of course, my DS Lite would end about as thick as the latest Harry Potter book – in hardcover.

Most people inclined to hang things off their wine glasses, they go in for beads or flowers or some frou-frou garbage. But you’re a (wo)man. You need something that speaks to your maturity and general awesomeness. The answer is clear. If you have to hang something off your wine glasses, go with NES cartridge wine charms. It’s the only choice.

These fully customizable wine charms (wine charms! I feel so sheltered suddenly!) are available from Etsy seller TheClayCollection, and they represent infinite possibilities. Just think: you could use the charms as subtle ways of communicating your feelings for your guests. Act like a jerk? You get Deadly Towers, buddy. Suck it up.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the guys from Hyperkin released the FC Mobile, a portable gaming system that could play original cartridges from your old NES console. Now, they’re getting set to release an update to the system that makes it just that much more compelling.

The FC Mobile II improves upon the original FC Mobile by bundling a pair of wireless joypads and a wireless light gun so you can use it as both a handheld and a full-fledged Nintendo Entertainment System (clone) that you can hook up to your television and even play two-player games on. And of course, you’ll finally be able to play Duck Hunt the way it was meant to be played.

In addition to the wireless controllers, the FC Mobile II will get a design upgrade that makes the system a little less like a bubbly Sega Game Gear, and a little more in line with the classic NES aesthetic.

Sure, there are plenty of cheap-o emulator systems out there that can run bootlegged ROM files, but the FC series is your best bet if you happen to have a stack of legit 8-bit carts lying around, or frequently troll the flea markets looking for elusive golden Nintendo World Championship cartridges. Or maybe you just like your games to be bigger than your consoles.

Hyperkin expects to start shipping the FC Mobile II in early May, and you can pre-order one now over on eBay for around $60 USD.

But the result looks great and it gets the job done–the job, in this case, being playing Famicom games, which is pretty important–so who am I to quibble over details about appearances?

Modder goteking seems to have a fascination with Famicom cartridges; he’s been in this space before for his excellent Famicam, a camera inside a cartridge. What will he stick in a cart next?

I’m starting to think that the only reason the PSP exists is because some Sony executive’s kid nagged him for a portable version of Monster Hunter. Where the games at Sony? Even Famicom owners have it better than us! There are a busload of games for their console still for sale! Akihabara-based Mandarake are selling a complete retail set of all Famicom games sold from 1983 until 1984 1994. That’s a lot of ugly cover art.

The FAMIKONFURUKONPURITOSETTO (Thanks a lot Google Translate) can be yours for the low, low price of ¥650,000 ($7,300 USD). If you’re thinking, “Who the hell’s going to buy that btw my PC costs twice that lolz”, think again. The comments at gameSniped go like this: “You have no idea how tempted I am to use my tax return to buy that. Who needs a new roof anyway?” Another commenter: “Roof’s are for p***ies! Do it!”

Here are some of the gems in this insane offering:

Judging from these shots, we can classify Famicom cartridge art like so: a. Made by Toriyama, b. Ugly crap. Seriously though, if I had the money I would have my brother buy the set for me just so I can look at them on rough days. That’s a whole set of childhood memories right there.

Famicom cartridges, and their NES counterparts, have been turned into a great many things by the DIY community–including the consoles themselves–but this particular mod wins major cool points simply for design. Turns out a Sony point-and-shoot camera is just the right size to fit inside a hollowed out cartridge.

I’m not sure I could bring myself to gut a copy of Final Fantasy III, but goteking, the modder behind this project, never played the game, and so felt no connection to the beloved RPG. He can be forgiven, however, because the game makes a pretty good-looking camera.

The BenHeck.com forums are jammed with people fascinated by the idea of turning things into other things, but goteking is apparently an old pro. He posted pictures of and links to a number of projects, including a DS Lite redone with Sony Vaio branding,

Apparently, he has a knack for taking good-looking items and making them even more interesting.
