Casio Turns Pictures into Freaky 3D Sculptures, Even They’re Not Sure Why

The malignant tumor that is 3D extends its nauseating tendrils from its firm grasp of the big screen and TVs to an older media. Casio presented a combination of a proprietary rendering technique and a custom 3D printer, which when combined can make sculptures based on two dimensional pictures.

It’s certainly an… interesting technology, although I have a feeling that this dalmatian’s creepy stare is no exception. I think any portrait will become terrifying when subjected to this technology.

The dog’s blood red eyes don’t help its efforts to remain adorable. Fortunately, Casio also has a scaled back version of this 3D-fication. They’re calling it Relief Painting Technology, and what it does is add just the right amount of texture to pictures to make them look and feel like they were paintings, like in the sample below.

But here’s the kicker to this story. Speaking with Casio, Evan Ackerman of Dvice found out that the company “is as unsure as we are about whether anyone actually wants them to be doing this.” I actually burst out laughing when I read that. That’s a nerd’s mentality right there – tech first, business second. Screw the new HDTVs and PCs, it’s nuggets of insanity like this that make me wish I was at CES.

It definitely makes sense to have a watch that can sync with your smartphone, especially if you’re busy or have to drive everywhere. What I like about these types of watches is that they allow you to get info from your phone without taking it out of your pocket.

The Casio G-Shock GB-9600 was designed to sync with your smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0. The watch will let you know about incoming calls, messages, and emails. The phone is water- and dust-proof. It comes with a 4-inch OLED screen. In the demo video, it’s shown syncing with the new NEC Medias PP N-01D Android smartphone, but it’s not clear if it works with other Bluetooth 4.0 phones, like the iPhone as well. I would hope so.

Of course, the watch offers the time, stopwatch and alarm features of standard G-Shock watches. It sells in black, white or red for ¥18,000 to ¥19,000 (~$230-245 USD).

Some of you guys might think that the sounds of electronic synthesizers are anything but relaxing. But here’s a way to have synthesizers all around you while you’re chilling, and you can be assured they won’t disturb your rest.

I absolutely love these handmade pillows from Gwendolin Tägert of SoftMachines. They look just like retro synths and drum machines. The series includes classics like the Roland TR-808, the TB-303 Bass Line, and the TR-909 Rhythm Composer.

The Roland machines fairly large (around 23″ wide), detailed with hand-cut felt, dimensional knobs, and cool stitching details. But they’re also quite pricey, selling for about $140 to $160 (USD).

But if you can’t afford that, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to snuggle up with some synths anyhow. That’s because SoftMachines also makes these screen-printed mini-pillows based on Casio, Moog and Arp mini synths. These sell for appx. $34 (USD) each, which makes them much more affordable. There’s also a set of three available for about $83.

Last, but certainly not least is the Minimachine, based on the classic Mini Moog, and selling for about $49.

These are the perfect gift for that electronic music fan on your holiday shopping list, and you can find them all over on Softmachines’ Etsy shop now. And if pillows aren’t your thing, they also make some awesome retro synth laptop sleeves.

My memory can’t stretch that far back into the past when I was still a kid, so I can’t remember exactly what model of camera my dad first gave me back then. All I remember was that it needed some manual cranking to turn the film (yes, all the cameras in town were still film cameras back then) after a shot was taken.

Oh, how I wish I was born into this generation so I could have this camera instead to be my first-ever shooter.

I would be lying if I said that it was the specs and not the design that first reeled me in, so I won’t. I mean, just take a look at the camera. I’ve loved Doraemon ever since I was a wee girl and this shade of blue just tickles my fancy.

Not to mention the equally adorable camera bag that comes with this limited-edition camera that I would love to get my greedy hands on as well:

But the EX-Z800 isn’t just a pretty sight, as I quickly learned. It’s actually a pretty powerful 14.1-megapixel shooter and can capture HD videos. The Doraemon design isn’t just on the outside either, it’s also on the inside, because you can actually decorate your photos with images of the little dude as well.

The camera will be made available by the end of August for 29,800 Yen (~$365), so I would definitely keep my eyes and ears peeled out for pre-orders and ordering information about the camera when August is nearing.

The new Casio G-SHOCK watch will come with Bluetooth connectivity so that it can adjust time all over the world by connecting with your smartphone to constantly keep its time in sync, including timezone changes. That’s kind of interesting because you won’t have to set your watch back or forth anymore.

However, what happens when your iPhone has the wrong time, like what happened over New Year’s and when Daylight Savings Time was over? I don’t know, but hopefully the watch will be able to adjust itself accordingly. Thanks to the use of a new variant of Bluetooth called Bluetooth Low Energy, the single-cell ion battery is supposed to last two years.

On an unrelated note, Casio also revealed their new Baby-G for women (which doesn’t have the Bluetooth feature). I don’t know if the new Neon Illuminator is actually really great or really crappy. It kind of reminds me of Miami Vice and all that plastic glam from the 80s. These models will use a special fluorescent ink that will become luminous under the watch’s own black light LED.

One of the more interesting digital cameras unveiled at CES 2011 is the Casio Exilim TRYX. It’s main tryk trick? A frame that’s connected to the main body only on the lens part, allowing for a variety of shooting angles and positions. You can use the frame as a handle, or to hang the camera, or as an impromptu tripod. Since the TRYX can also shoot video – up to 1080p at 30fps – you can also hold the TRYX video cam-style, whether you’re left- or right-handed. In addition, the 3″ LCD screen can also be rotated independent of the lens, perfect for taking self-portraits and shots at uncommon angles.

Aside from its wacky exterior, the TRYX seems to have quite a robust hardware and software feature set as well. It has an ultra-wide-angle 21mm lens, a 12.1mp CMOS sensor, dual-core processors and Casio’s Exilim Engine HS. Some of the camera’s functions include a 360-degree image capture mode called Slide Panorama, slow-motion video capture at speeds up to 240fps, High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging, and a motion-triggered self-timer.

If you’re still having a hard time imagining how the TRYX can be handled, here’s a short video taken by Shiny Media:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I’m not really fond of taking pictures, so I’m fine with the camera on my phone. Still, I’m curious as to the quality of the connection of the frame and body on the TRYX. The video seems to show that the connection at the lens supports the body well, and the fit is properly stiff – the body doesn’t swing freely while only the frame is held. Then again, that’s a brand new device; we don’t know if the connection will hold up over time. If you’re already sold, you can pre-order the TRYX at Amazon for $250 (USD).

Another cool new technology just surfaced during CES week. Casio has just announced a new slimline projector that does away with those nasty mercury based light bulbs and replaces them with a combination of LED, laser and fluorescent illumination.

And unlike those LED mini projectors, this is a serious projector, pumping out a whopping peak brightness of 3000 lumens! The new hybrid light source manages to combine these multiple light sources to produce a super bright image. Blue lasers produces both blue and green colors, while the LED punches out red. All of these are combined and pushed through a TI DLP chip, at resolutions up to 1280 x 800.

The Green Slim projectors are about the size of a sheet of letter-size paper, stand about 1.7″ tall, and weight about 5 pounds. While that’s nowhere nearly as small as pico-projectors, there’s no comparison when it comes to brightness and resolution.

Casio plans on releasing several models of the projector, including 2000, 2500, and 3000 lumen variants, as well as lower resolution models which will assuredly be the least expensive. The top of the line models can also receive data wirelessly from up to 4 PCs.

The first of the Green Slim projectors is set to hit the streets in February or March, with prices ranging from $899 to $1299 (USD), so if you’re in the market for a new data or gaming projector, you might want to wait to check these out when they’re released.

Do the guys in your company’s accounting department give you the creeps? Maybe it’s because they’re spying on you with their calculators.

That’s right, this ordinary looking Casio LCD desktop calculator has been retrofitted to conceal a tiny little video camera, perfect for snooping on your unsuspecting office buddies in between math equations.

From the product description, it sounds like its got a built in digital video and audio recorder, and runs on a 9-volt battery, so it’s completely self-contained. Although I am confused by the part where it says that it’s also a wireless camera with a built in transmitter and a remote video receiver. Maybe it can send an analog feed in real-time, and then store video on the internal memory. Each one comes with 8GB of storage and can record videos at up to 628×582 pixels (what a strange resolution). Plus it doesn’t need much light to operate – just 3 Lux. Plus, it’s still a fully-functional calculator, which should make it look even less suspicious to casual observers.

The calculator spy cam is available over at ChinaGrabber for $78.99 (USD). But there’s also a guy over on eBay with what appear to be exactly the same calcucameras for a few bucks less. But in this case, the resolutions listed seem to make more sense, they mention no wireless connectivity and a built-in rechargeable battery instead of a 9-volt. Who knows which product listing is more accurate? I’m laying odds on the eBay option. That said, as is always the case with these odd little gadgets from China, caveat emptor, YMMV and all that jazz.

While there are many symbols of true geekdom, it’s possible that none is more iconic than the classic Casio calculator watch. There’s nothing that says “I still live in mom’s basement” more than a watch that can do math. But if you wear one of these, you probably can already calculate pi to 100 digits in your head, so what’s the point?

Now you can make the same fashion statement, without the need for all those pesky electronics. BraveMoonman has created these oh-so-awesome felt calculator watches so you can show your true self without worrying about batteries dying or LCD displays failing when you bump into a wall.

Each of these soft calculator bracelets is lovingly handstitched from felt and velcro, and they come in a variety of bright colors (I don’t know what to say about the hot pink), as well as the classic grey band.

As the Oakland, CA creator of these non-functional timepieces says: “If people ask you for the time, say ‘It’s time to look cool!’”. I say: “If people ask you how much 2 + 2 equals, tell them ‘higher than you can count. duh.’”. So what are you waiting for? Head on over to BraveMoonman’s Etsy Shop and wrap your wrist in one of these. Now.

I just love the design of this new LCD watch from Casio. Combining the simplistic styling of the earliest digital watches from the 1970s, paired with decidedly modern innards, the Futurist LA-2002G is definitely one to put on your wish list if you like a little flash on your wrist.

Not only does the Futurist look great, it’s quite functional, offering 29 time zones around the globe, a 1/100th-second stop watch and countdown timer. The watch offers up to five independent daily alarms, and day/date display.

It’s all housed in a matte gold finish stainless steel case with a textured body and articulated metal band. While Casio lists the watch as a women’s design, I’d say it looks pretty unisex from the photos.

Until recently, the Futurist was available only in Japan, but watch importer TokyoFlash is now taking pre-orders for the watch for approximately $149 USD.
