Do you miss looking at cassette tapes? Yes, I said looking. I don’t think anyone would miss their sound quality (or lack thereof). Unlike CDs or today’s intangible digital music, the look and form of cassette tapes are iconic not only because of their colorful labels but because you could write on the tape itself too. That personal touch gives it a soul. So I ask again, do you miss staring at cassette tapes? If so, you should check out the AirCassette app.

AirCassette is a music player for iOS devices. It’s main draw is that the “now playing” screen looks like a cassette tape – the artist and song title appear on the label in a handwritten type of font, plus the tape’s spools rotate as the music plays. It even has the proper animations for rewind and fast forward. There are several designs included so you can easily swap them out and stare at a different tape.

AirCassette also has a queueing feature – similar to iTunes “On-the-Go” playlist, along with a few sharing options. You can share a song or your entire queue vie email or on Facebook. Here’s the app in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

iOS users, you know what to do if you like this app – here’s the iTunes link. It’ll cost you $1.99 (USD). Is it worth it? I’m not sure; the thing is even it’s greatest strength still needs some polish. First of all I’d prefer it if the cassette tape looked more realistic. Even on video I can see that the image of the tape is flat. It doesn’t look like a cassette tape; it looks like a drawing of a cassette tape. I still might get it for the queueing feature though. You can check out its official website for more info.

A new iPad app called Stereolizer takes advantage of the abundance of Internet radio stations and lets users record tracks from stations onto a digital cassette tape. The tapes seem to be graphical equivalents of an audio file, but the illusion Stereolizer provides is aesthetically pleasing. Recording, playing back, rewinding and more of tapes are all done on a virtual tape deck.

Stereolizer also lets users record through the iPad’s built-in mic. Here’s a video walkthrough of the app:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

One feature that I think needs to be added is the ability to share your tapes, whether it be via twitter, Facebook or email, so users could send and receive virtual mixtapes. And then you’ll compile a stack of tapes that chronicle your failed relationships, then you’ll record over those mixtapes with your drunken rants about how much of a bastard that ex of yours is, and then you’ll change your mind and make new mixtapes to try and win them back, all of which will inevitably be sent back to you. Awesome. Stereolizer is available from the iTunes App Store for $2 (USD).

Cassette tapes are an all-but-extinct technology, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still put them to use. You could turn them into a lamp, for instance – or how about a chair made from cassettes?

That’s exactly what the guys at OOO My Design did when they made their Silla cassette tape chair, created from a variety of old tapes. I’m not sure how comfortable it would be to sit on top of dozens of tapes and tie-wraps, but it does look cool, don’cha think?

At least while you sit there, you can relax and listen to some old tapes, since the chair comes with a WalkMan attached to the side. It’s not yet available for purchase, but will sell for €140.00 (appx. $196 USD) when it’s released.

When out of its box, the silicon cover protects your iPhone from scratches, dust and fingerprints. But when placed inside and propped open, it provides you with a handy stand for viewing video or photos (assuming you want landscape mode).

No word on whether or not your shiny new iPhone 4 will fit inside it, but if you’ve got a 3G or 3GS, you should be safe.

The iPhone retro cassette case is available from UK wholesaler thumbsUp! if you’re interested in buying in quantities of 100 or more. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait for retailers to start stocking them. And don’t try to jam one of these in your cassette player. It won’t fit, and you will break both your iPhone and your tape deck.

As you may have guessed from its looks, the Tape Express is also a portable cassette tape player. So if you just can’t let go of your tapes even after recording their contents, you can still use them with the Tape Express. Pop in a couple of AA batteries and take it with you wherever you go, just like old times.

And that’s the appropriately named VHS Heroes skin by Hollis Brown Thornton. I think it looks way better as a laptop skin, but it’s also available as an iPod Touch, Nano and Classic skin. All iPod and iPhone skins sell for $15 (USD), while laptop skins sell for $30. Head on over to Infectious for more designs. The shop also has instructions on applying the skins, but you can also check out Testfreaks’ review of Infectious iPhone skins for a tutorial, complete with photos.

The 45 nano cassette tape case isn’t for people who like to wear tight pants, because it will turn your 4th gen, stick of gum-sized iPod nano into something as large as, well, a cassette tape.

And if you thought Apple did you a favor by having all sorts of colors for the iPod nano’s casing, you’ll love the fact that there are 32 different 45 nano cassette tape designs to choose from. Actually I shouldn’t call them designs, because the cases really are cassette tapes. They were just gutted and hacked to house an iPod nano. Variety, old school looks, and environment-friendly!

What’s not to like? Well, Contexture Design is selling the 45 nano case for $45 (CAD) (appx. $41 USD). If you’re good with your hands, you can probably make your own cassette tape case for free. But if not, well, you can sulk and flame Contexture Design for selling a gutted cassette tape for $41.

Reader Alex commented on our call for surveyees (take the survey! there’s a prize!) that the stuff we usually feature are cool (of course they are ) but mostly expensive. Alex, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry but this is another one of those cool-but-expensive stuffs. But they’re not just any stuff, they’re works of art. Remember iri5 and her Ghost in the Machine film & cassette tape portraits? She’s selling her new creations! Yaaay! They’re quite expensive! Yaaay…

The new pieces are still topnotch, like the 12″ x 24″ Audrey Hepburn portrait made of film prints shown above. You can have it for $2,000 (USD). Here’s a 16″ x 16″ portrait of Marilyn Monroe, which is not a part of her Ghost in the Machine series because it’s made from photos of the late artist, as opposed to films or cassette tapes.

This awesome portrait sells for $500, currently the cheapest item on iri5′s store. Right now the most expensive item on the store is this 12″ x 24″ Betty Page portrait, again made from film strips.

Silhouette so shiny. Mmmmm. The price? $3,000. Sorry Alex. Check out the rest of iri5′s work in the store and on her Flickr page.

Artist iri5′s “Ghost in the Machine” is a series of portraits that connect music with visual art by making use of old cassette tapes as medium. When I first saw Neatorama‘s post about the project I thought it was just a cheap trick. But after taking a closer look at the portraits, the simplicity and accuracy of the portraits changed my mind: I am now officially blown away.

Here’s Hendrix on tape:

Joy Division’s Ian Curtis gets a more elaborate treatment:

And here’s the immortal Bob Dylan:

I want to try and recreate the Dylan portrait, but I know I’ll only end up making black clouds. Check out “Ghost in the Machine” as well as iri5′s other series on Flickr.
