Ok, I’m the first to say that we’ve featured some difficult to read timepieces here on Technabob over the years, but at least there’s usually some way to explain how to read them. For the first time, here’s one watch that I have absolutely no idea how to tell the time.

See what I mean? With the Dark Armada LED watch, it’s always half-past I have no clue. According to the guys who sell it over at Chinavasion, “The upper LED lights display the hour. The lower LED lights display minutes. How’s that for intuitiveness!” Yeah, right. Intuitive. Here, maybe these instructions will help:

Nope, still no idea. Even the instructions are hard to read, but they lost me at “The watch in its quiescent state….” I’m thinking that the dots are actually supposed to look vaguely like numbers, but I certainly can’t make them out.

The red LED face and “Evil Black” silicon strap does look cool though – almost like something from the Predator movies. Apparently this watch “Usually sells for over 100 USD”, but can now be yours for the bargain-basement price of just $7.26. I’m going to guess that’s because nobody can figure out how to read them.

Still, if you want to look cool, and don’t really care what time it is, head on over to Chinavasion and order a caseload for yourself and your friends, so you can all be clueless together when you synchronize your watches.

Like a lot of things in this world, the HD Spy Camera light switch can be used for good or evil. You could use the camera to be sure no one was in a part of your home or business where they weren’t allowed. You could also use it to spy on people in various rooms of a home or office. The switch mounts to the wall and has lots of features that are interesting.

It has a pinhole camera inside – behind that logo on the bottom right corner. The video it takes is stored to a microSD card and can be shot out to your notebook via USB. It looks like a normal light switch according to the market. It’s not looking like any light switch we commonly have in the US to me though.

It also has a GSM SIM card inside and can send you text message when it senses motion. It can shoot still photos or video and can send you an MMS text message of the photo it takes as well. You can also activate the camera to record using your phone. Unfortunately, the video resolution of this “HD” camera is only 320 x 240 but at least the stills are in 1280 x 960 resolution. It can be powered by an internal battery or an AC outlet. I wonder why it can’t just get power from the light switch. The camera is $80 over at Chinavasion.

You know a camera is small when it’s got the following warning on its product page: “Important: Keep away from small children as it could become a choking hazard.”

While I’m not sure the guys who make this tiny camera have actually checked with the Guinness Book or World Records, I do have to say this is the smallest standalone HD camera I’ve seen.

We’ve written about a couple of other tiny cameras before, but this one definitely looks smaller than either the already miniscule Chobi Cam or the MAME-CAM DX. At just about 1.25″ wide, ChinaVasion’s DV59 micro-camera is definitely small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, and even looks a little bit like a miniature DSLR. Trust me when I say it’s not a DSLR, though.

Despite its size, ChinaVasion claims the camera can shoot 720p (1280×720) video at 30fps. Still images can be captured at up to 8 megapixels, but that’s upsampled from its 2 megapixel CMOS sensor. I don’t get why anyone still quotes upsampled megapixel resolutions anymore. Heck, with Photoshop, I could turn a VGA image into a 20 megapixel image, and it’ll still look like crap.

Still, priced at only $44.49 (USD), it looks like a fun little novelty item, if for nothing else you want to tell your friends that you have the world’s smallest HD camera – except for that one that’s built into every smartphone on the market these days. Oh yeah.

There’s probably something to be said about LED shower heads or light therapy in general, especially when you have just woken up. This LED Color Changing Shower Head is from Chinavasion and the colors will change depending on the temperature of the water, making it easy to figure out if the water is going to scald you or freeze you.

Temperatures below 90°F make it turn green, temps between 91 and 105°F it becomes blue and 107 to 113°F will make it red. If it gets above 114°F, the shower head will start to flash, alerting you to the danger of potentially scalding yourself. These shower heads don’t require any batteries. There is an internal generator powered by the flow of water to charge it up.

You can get one for just $13 a pop here. That’s not a bad price for something like this.

Car wrecks aren’t much fun, unless you’re watching them on TV. After the collision is over and you’ve made sure that everyone is alright, there’s something else that goes through your head. Whose fault was it? Sure, you probably have a pretty clear-cut idea of who was at fault, but the officer showing up to the scene might not. In cases where there are no witnesses, it becomes your word against the other driver. One way you can back up your story is by recording the whole thing.

Since you aren’t going to bust out your iPhone just before the collision to record it, you’ll need something in place to record your entire drive. Chinavasion’s Car DVR with Motion Detection is simple, but might be just what you need. It uses an SD card to record video at 640 x 480 resolution. The clips are broken up in to 20 minute segments and are cycled out as space is needed.

Since it is motion-activated, you know it won’t just be recording the inside of your garage while it’s parked at night, so you only get the good stuff. At $40, I’d say there are few reasons not to get one. They even throw in a 2GB card, how about that?

Can’t decide what sort of a smartphone to buy? The WinDroid is the perfect phone for you indecisive folks out there.

The phone ships with the none-too-thrilling Android 1.6 OS (but can be upgraded to 2.1 – voiding its warranty, though). The Windows side of the house runs Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro. The touchscreen phone is capable of dual-booting between Windows Mobile and Android OS. Under the hood of this unusual phone is a speedy Marvell PXA310 CPU, running at 624MHz. It’s an unlocked quad-band GSM phone, meaning you can use it pretty much anywhere on the planet too.

The hardware isn’t exactly cutting-edge, but a 2-megapixel digital camera, Bluetooth 2.0, and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi should do the trick for most basic needs. The screen’s meager 240×400 resolution may have you going a little crosseyed if you’re used to today’s super-sharp displays. And despite its rather hefty 0.55″ thick profile, there’s no keyboard from what I can tell. At least there’s GPS capability, so you can use Google Maps for navigation. Sure, the hardware doesn’t sound too thrilling, but can your phone do this?

Nope? Didn’t think so. You can get your hands on the WinDroid phone over at Chinavasion for $239 (USD). If you’re looking for a single device that can run all the Microsoft and Google apps, it’s definitely one to check out. Apple fanboys and girls, you’re out of luck. Maybe next year ChinaVasion will offer up an iPhoWinDroid.

While many of the unusual electronic watches coming out of Asia feature complex displays that border on insane (you hear us Tokyoflash?), this LED watch is about as simple as we can imagine.

The ABYSS watch has no hands. And no, it doesn’t emit blue smoke. And despite its name, I don’t think it has anything to do with the James Cameron movie. There’s just a single ring of LEDs dotting the circumfrence of its face. White dots indicate hours, blue dots indicate… um… we’re not exactly sure what the blue dots indicate.

Best we can tell from the pictures, they’re parts of an hour. But since the product details say the watch’s touchscreen face is used for “changing hour and minute data,” it’s possible that you look at hours in one pass, and minutes in another. On second thought, this is starting to sound complicated. Either way, the ABYSS probably looks pretty cool in a darkened room, even if you can’t tell exactly what time it is.

The description refer to the ABYSS as “Japanese-inspired,” meaning it’s probably made in China. While the ABYSS watch doesn’t look like it’s got the build quality of a ToykoFlash watch, it is a heckuva lot less expensive. The ABYSS sells for just $48.09 (USD), and you can grab one over at Chinavasion.

The latest in handheld emulators, the Letcool N350JP tries to one-up other portables by adding on something they don’t offer – a pair of external controllers for two-player fun.

The compact system comes with emulators for the Super Nintendo, NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, but if it’s anything like the other portable emulators out there, you can bet there will be more emulators, and probably a Linux build for it at some point. It’s also got a nice 3.5″ screen – making it significantly larger than, say, the Dingoo A320.

In addition to classic gameplay, the portable can play 8 different video file formats and 10 different audio formats, and offers a microSD card slot for expansion beyond the 4GB internal memory. It’s also got a video out, so you can connect it to your TV and play classic games on the big screen.

You can get your hands on the Letcool portable over at Chinavasion for $71.25 (USD). If you buy one, let us know how well it works!

The guys over at Chinavasion can always be relied on for bringing inexpensive and offbeat gadgetry from China to the rest of the world. The latest addition to their line of GPS devices claims to be the “Galaxy’s Thinnest GPS”.

Measuring in at 13mm thick, this portable GPS is definitely one of the slimmest units I’ve seen. Although last time I checked, my iPhone 3GS is actually a hair slimmer at 12.3mm thick, but I suppose that’s splitting hairs. Regardless, as standalone units go, this one could be the thinnest. The compact GPS features a 5-inch diagonal LCD touchscreen, and is powered by a SiRF-Atlas III processor. The device runs on the Windows CE 5.0 operating system, and takes map files loaded onto a MicroSD card. The system offers voice guidance, 2D and 3D map modes, as well as day and night modes for the display.

In addition to its GPS capabilities, it can play media files in MP4, AVI, 3GP, MOV, WMV, M4A, WAV, MP3, WMA and even SWF formats. There’s even a built-in FM transmitter so you can send the audio to your car stereo. And it does all this for just $100 (USD).

So that sounds okay, right? Well, here’s the bad news. According to Chinavasion’s product description: “This model is compatible with most brands of GPS software – however hardware specific software such as Garmin may not run on this unit. As the wholesaler, Chinavasion provides the GPS- enabled hardware only, not the software. Chinavasion provides no warranty or customer support regarding GPS software. Chinavasion cannot provide downloads / links / advice regarding GPS software. Any software installation you undertake should be performed or supervised by a professional… Actual GPS voice and display languages depends on the GPS software package.” So unless you know where to go digging for Windows CE-based GPS applications and maps, it sounds like this super-thin GPS could be pretty much useless.

If you’re feeling adventurous and don’t mind trolling around some Torrents looking for GPS software, you can order one here. Just don’t blame me when you drive your car into a drainage ditch.

Looking for a way to get high-def digital content on your TV? You might want to check out this nifty media player box that can play full HD videos directly from your SD or USB flash memory.

I’ve seen plenty of portable retro video game systems in my travels, but never one that attempts to cover as many bases as this one.

This Chinese import plays 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit titles from 7 different game platforms in one compact system. While it sports a less than thrilling name, the CVFH-N03-4G (aka the Dingoo A320) can play thousands of games from the NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Nintendo Gameboy Advance, SNK Neo-Geo consoles, as well as the CAPCOM CPS1 and CPS2 arcade systems. The system features a 2.8″ QVGA (320×240) display and can also output to your TV.

Now how you get game ROMs to play on the system is up to you, but once you do, you can load up the portable system with up to 4GB of games and other media files and can even play some Flash-based games. There’s also a mini-SDHC slot in case 4GB isn’t enough to whet your appetite for storage. In addition to retro games, the portable can play your audio and video files in a wide variety of formats. There’s also an FM tuner, voice recorder and e-book reader along for the ride in case you get bored with all of those classic games. Check out the video clip below to see one of these in action:

For just a few brief moments each day, this clock looks like an ordinary cube, but most of the time it transforms to form star-like geometric patterns.

The Time Cube carves off one corner of its 6-sided box to form a series of layered triangles which rotate to tell the current time. The largest triangle displays hours, while the medium-sized one tells minutes, and the small spinning triangle on top acts as a second hand.

At first glance, I thought it might be confusing to read, but if you just think about the triangles like the hands on a regular clock, it’s not too difficult to get the hang of it.

The Time Cube clock is available now from gadget importer Chinavasion for about $12 USD.

Plenty of companies have made cassette tape adapters for connecting MP3 players to your car stereo, but this one wins the award for ingenuity. Not only does this gadget let you play your digital tracks through your old school tape player, the cassette IS the MP3 player.

Chinavasion’s MP3 Cassette Player is a completely self-contained media player that just happens to slip inside your tape deck for easy playback through your car stereo. It’s not the world’s most feature-packed player, handling only MP3 format files, and zero on-board storage. You’ll have to add your own memory through the player’s SD/MMC slot.

I’ve always thought it would be cool if I could just dock my iPod directly into the cassette player in my car, but for now, this’ll have to do.

Chinavasion’s latest media player not only handles your music and videos with aplomb, it can also emulate a variety of classic gaming consoles. There’s emulation support for the NES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Sega Genesis so you can play your favorites from the past. In addition, the device also integrates an E-book capability that actually uses text-to-speech to read books to you in either Chinese or English.

The player has a 3-inch TFT widescreen, and comes with a snap-on gaming pad accessory so you can get your game on. The device has 2GB of on-board memory and can be expanded up to 6GB total, with the addition of a 4GB SD card. Chinavasion hasn’t announced a price yet, but based on their past bargain-basement releases, it’s almost a sure bet that it’ll be inexpensive.

Hidden inside the Tire Clock Spy Cam is a digital video camera with a 2.4GHz wireless transmitter. An included remote receiver can view and record what the camera captures. If the general concept of such a gadget isn’t strange enough for you, add some Engrish text that reads “The Best Wish For My Good Friend” and the Queen’s English spelling of “Tyre”, and you’ve got yourself one oddball device.

Unless you happen to run an auto parts store in Hong Kong, I don’t know if hiding a spy cam in something that stands out quite so much as this is a good idea.

Leave it to the folks in China to bring us a single portable gadget that crams so much into such a little package.

Leave it to the folks in China to bring us a single portable gadget that crams so much into such a little package.

The TX-0088 Portable DVD Player not only features movie playback from DVDs, it can also play MP4 format videos burned to disc or a USB flash drive. The player’s TV receiver can handle over the air television broadcasts in PAL, SECAM and NTSC formats, so it should work just about anywhere in the world.

In addition, it can play emulated classic games from the Nintendo NES 8-bit console. It even ships with two controllers so you can get your retro game on. About the only downside I can see is the player’s 8-inch screen which is a standard def 4:3 ratio, so DVD playback will be cropped or letterboxed.

In the sound department, the TX-0088 offers Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound via an optical output, as well as built-in virtual surround sound. You can also transmit the audio signal to your car stereo via the player’s FM transmitter. If you just want to listen to the radio, its got its own FM tuner built in too.

The whole system is available from importer Chinavasion for the odd price of $172.59.
