Cigarette Lighter/Stun Gun Combo Smokes Cigarettes (and Humans)

This is one of the oddest combo devices I’ve ever seen. On one hand it will light your smoke, but if you need a little something extra in a lighter, it will also act as a stun gun.

It should be called the “Stun and Smoke” or “Smoke and Stun,”, but it’s simply called a “Multi Function Cigarette Lighter and Self-Defense Device.” How boring. In addition to lighting cigarettes, it features a 260KV ‘high voltage’ output, powered by an integrated NiCad rechargeable battery.

Hopefully you are fully charged when you encounter the bad guy in a dark alley, and you’re not in the middle of lighting up. This device also acts as an LED flashlight, because why not? Charging time is about 10 hours, during which time you won’t be stunning or smoking. By the time you get some of that nicotine, you’ll be shaking so bad that you’ll really want to stun somebody.

Tiger Skin Rug Made from 500,000 Cigarettes

I’m not a fan of cigarettes, but I am a fan of cigarette art. Instead of lighting one up and slowly smoking your way to lung cancer, why not pile a couple hundred thousand of those nicotine sticks to form something that looks like, say, a tiger skin rug?

Well, that’s exactly what Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing did. He’s been working on tobacco-related art projects for the past decade, and this cigarette tiger skin rug is the third in his series of three works of art called the Tobacco Project.

It looks like a fluffy rug you might find in some rich person’s mansion, but I doubt that this will be able to provide you with much comfort. Cigarettes aren’t exactly the most comfortable material there is to rest on.

This 440-pound rug is currently on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts until December 4, 2011. It will then be moved to the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut in January next year.

Blu Makes Sure You Won’t Be Blue and Lonely While Smoking Your E-Cigs

I have a lot of friends who are smokers trying to quit. And it was through them that I first heard of the electronic cigarette.

I thought that it was a pretty cool innovation back then and I still do today. And e-cigarette maker Blu has just made things a whole lot cooler: by adding a social networking feature.

Its reach isn’t exactly as far and wide as Facebook’s, being limited to just 50 feet and all, but it’s still a pretty cool thing. Each pack of e-cigarettes comes with a reusable pack which also doubles as the charger. The soon-to-be released packs will detect the radio signals emitted by other Blu packs by e-smokers within the area and alert the owner by vibrating and flashing a blue light.

If the other smoker is someone you’d like to make some further connections with, just head on over with your Blu pack in tow and if the other party consents, you can exchange contact info and Facebook profile info via the Blu packs. Convenient, right?

The all-new “smart” packs will go on sale next month for $80 (USD).

Ziggybox: Cigarette-Controlled Synthesizer Makes Smokin’ Sounds

The image below might look to you like some cigarettes lounging around in couple of ashtrays, but there’s more to this scene than meets the eye. Take another look, and you’ll see a cable leading from the table to a laptop, and you’ll realize that it’s actually a controller for a synthesizer.

The Ziggybox is one of the more unusual synthesizer rigs I’ve ever seen. It was created by Christian Losert and Paul Schengber, and it “generates and modulates sounds by placing cigarettes in the notch of an ashtray or by opening a box of cigarettes.” It sounds like a ridiculous idea, but watch the video below, and you’ll see how cool it actually is:

The whole setup uses a few strategically-placed light sensors, interfaced with a C++ and Open Frameworks software to control Ableton Live over MIDI. I suppose there’s no reason they had to use ashtrays and cigarettes to control their sequencer, but I still think it’s a cool idea – or is that a KOOL idea?

I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but Japan can be a weird place. At least if you judge the country strictly by the oddball gadgets and toys that they release, on a regular basis, they are. Take, for example, this wacky bit of Gundam-inspired schwag from the island nation.

What you’re looking at here is the brand-spanking-new Gundam Illumination Ashtray. Based on either the head of Zaku II (MS-06S) or Gouf (MS-07B), these ashtrays are just the thing for the Gundam fan/smoker who has everything. And I’m sure you know dozens of people who fit that bill, right?

They’re designed for use in your car, are easy to clean out, and even offers LED illumination so you can see where you’re stubbing out your cigarette butts.

Personally, if I did smoke, I’d rather have one that looks like a complete Mobile Suit, with all its weapons, instead of just a decapitated one. But if you don’t care, you can get your hands on one over at StrapyaWorld for about $35 (USD).

Cigarette Pack Mobile Phone: Smoke ‘Em if You Got ‘Em

While most of us are off enjoying our shiny new iPhones and Droids, those of you who prefer your phones ugly, bulky, and loaded with nicotine might want to check this out.

Now why you’d want a cell phone that looks like a pack of cigarettes is anyone’s guess. All I can assume is that if there’s a strange gadget that’s yet be made in China, they’ll make it. These particular phones are dead ringers packs of Marlboros, complete with flip-top box and storage for actual cigarettes. The Marlboro 508 phone is pretty standard low-end cell phone fare, featuring a dual-band GSM phone (works everywhere but the U.S.), a 1.6-inch screen, and MP3/MP4 player, bluetooth and an FM radio. One interesting feature is a 1.3-megapixel camera that’s hidden in the side of the cigarette pack for your spy shots.

If you’re a smoker, or just want to look like one for some reason, you can grab a Marlboro phone over at ChinaGrabber for $144.99 (USD) a pack. Isn’t that about what a carton of cigarettes sells for these days anyhow?

Our Fun for Two Minutes Gadget of the Day is a cigarette lighter that’s shaped like a cigarette. That’s like a bread knife that’s shaped like bread. Or a space shuttle that’s shaped like space. Use it as an icebreaker or a mustache-burning prank. Feel free to light stuff with it. Although judging by its size, I think it’s butane will be used up in 3 days.

Cell Phone Cigarette Handset is Smoke Free

I’m really not sure who the target audience is for this odd mobile phone handset. Maybe it’s for people trying to quit smoking? Or is it for people who want to look like they’re smokers? Regardless, you sure will look goofy making your phone calls into this thing.

This ridiculous device plugs into your cell phone and lets you make calls by speaking into the cigarette box. Don’t ask me. I don’t get it either. I suppose the good news is that you shouldn’t end up with lung cancer from using these cigs. And thanks to its “Anti-Electromagnetic Waves” capability, brain cancer won’t be a problem either.

I guess one good thing is that at $6.79 a pack, they’re actually cheaper than real cigarettes in some big cities, so go nuts and grab a whole carton and make a whole mess of phone calls. If you just can’t resist the urge to light up, you can grab a pack over on DealExtreme.

Flash Drive / Lighter Combo: Why is My Pc on Fire?

Every time I think I’ve seen every possible USB flash memory gimmick, another one comes along and does something I never thought was necessary. This flash drive not only stores your precious files, it’s got a built-in cigarette lighter.

I’m not convinced that a device filled with lighter fluid is a good thing to plug into any power source, but that’s just me. If you happen to have one of those laptops with an overheating battery, the butane in this thing would make for a nice pyrotechnic show. I suppose if you could use USB to actually control the flame, that would be pretty cool though.

If you just absolutely have to light up while you’re at your PC, they’re available from Memlite in several candy-like colors, and in memory sizes from 512MB (appx. $25 USD) to 4GB (appx. $75 USD.)
