I’m a sucker for lists and GTD software, and RealMac Software’s Clear for iPhone looks pretty sweet. Its stupid-simple way of displaying tasks and manipulating them makes it a good option for people who want to keep track of tasks and get them done in a snap.

The app is elegantly designed and driven entirely by gestures, making it easy to add tasks, remove and rearrange them. That’s always been the benefit of iOS apps and it’s nice to see Clear trying to exploit this as much as possible. The nice, simple colors also make it very intuitive to see tasks in priority order. From the video, it looks like you swipe right to complete a task, and swipe left to dismiss it. A drag motion lets you reorganize tasks, while the app also uses an ingenious “pinch apart” gesture to add a new task, and a pinch inward to collapse menus and lists within tasks.

RealMac Clear should available from the App Store soon.

I’m all for making your gadgets look better, but I draw the line at making something heavier. The previous iPhone 4 mod with the metal back looked good but I would have gone with carbon fiber to make the phone lighter, not heavier.

This mod is definitely classy. The back has been replaced by a clear, see-through casing, allowing you to see the innards of the iPhone. Well, that’s what everyone thought when they first saw it. It turns out that the clear case was obtained by using paint thinner on the actual iPhone 4 back. This removed the paint and made it transparent. Ingenious – and so cool.

Although a clear iPhone might sound cool, there are problems of light leakage with even a white back, so you can just imagine what will happen with a clear back. Users report that with a white back the camera flash can become unusable.

I don’t like to wait for anything. That means I buy the gadgets I want as soon as they are in a store and I can walk out with them. That also means I end up stuck with gear that doesn’t always worked like I thought or lacks some of the features that later versions get. The iPad is a good example. I really like the tablet, but every time I am out, I wish I had a 3G version.

Geeks that happened to live in a Clear 4G service area have been able to get the iSpot hotspot device that is only for iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad for a bit. The hotspot allows the user to connect their iPhone and iPad to the 4G WiMax network Clear operates, when the things work. Unfortunately, there were a lot of folks complaining that the iSpot didn’t always work as planned.

Clear has now officially killed off the iSpot after offing it at a huge discount a few weeks ago. Right before Christmas the iSpot was $20 rather than the $99 it normally sold for. A Clear rep on the Clear forums has confirmed that the device is no longer offered online and that once stock in stores is gone there will be no more. The service will continue to be supported and a few are held back for warranty replacement needs.

For some reason, I always thought the first transparent computer Apple ever made was the original Bondi blue iMac. Well, it turns out that back in the late 1980s, a handful of Mac SE computers were made without any pigmentation, so you could see clear through them.

From what I can tell, only about 10 of these machines were ever made, and they lived within the walls of Apple. Now, if you’ve got deep enough pockets, you could be the proud owner of one of these extreme rarities. Apparently, these machines were built for the Macintosh R&D team at Apple to verify the placement of internal components, and never were intended for production.

This particular see-through Mac SE is being offered over on eBay with a starting bid of a whopping $25,000 (USD). For that price, you could buy a pretty nice car. Or 50 iPads. And this transparent Macintosh doesn’t even boot up properly. The guy selling it says it’ll boot off of the 800k floppy drive only. And being such a rarity, I’d doubt that cracking it open and fixing the hard drive would be good for its resale value.

Imagine if they had actually released this thing back when it was made. What if it came out and bombed? Would the transparent iMac have ever seen the light of day?

We here at technabob are big fans of the guys over at Retro Thing. They’re always digging up the coolest blasts-from-the-past. Now, they’ve really outdone themselves, offering up a totally unique new product perfect for retro game fans.

Created with the help of Legacy Engineering (the guys responsible for the Atari Flashback 2 console), Retro Thing’s new Clear Classic USB Joystick ($29.95 USD) is based on the look of a classic Atari 2600 joystick, but comes in a super cool see-through package. In addition to its default clear mode, the circuit board lights up in a brilliant blue when plugged into your computer’s USB port.

The Classic Clear comes with a CD loaded up with a copy of Stella – the leading Atari 2600 emulator, along with 80 games for your retro enjoyment. And if you know all the proper rocks to dig under, you can load up all of your favorite game ROMs and play them with this classic stick. And since the joystick works just like any other USB joypad, it’ll work with other popular retro emulators such as MAME and MESS.

If you’re into retro gaming, you owe it to yourself to head on over to the Reflex Audio site and place your order for one today.

Just because you didn’t buy that Pac-Man watch doesn’t mean that you can’t have him dangling around on your wrist anyhow. Here’s another way to keep Pac-Man on your wrist, and for a lot less money to boot.

Handmade by ParAmour Designs, this Pac-Man and ghosts “Clearly Pac-Man” bracelet features the likenesses of the yellow dot-gobbler and his four ghostly nemeses wrapped around in a never-ending circular maze. And with no power pills, those ghosts are sure to catch up with you really fast. The bracelet design was hand-drawn as a vector image, then screened onto acetate and layered into durable clear resin – which, coincidentally, is exactly how the original arcade machine worked. I read that somewhere, I’m sure of it.

The unusual laptop stand helps keeps your laptop or notebook computer cool and encourages better workplace ergonomics. All while looking like a 6-legged crab. Each one is laser-cut from red or clear acrylic, and comes with rubber feet to protect both your computer and your desktop from scratch crab claws. It fits 15″, 16″ and 17″ laptops, but a 14″ version is on the way soon. (Sorry, 13″ MacBookers!)

The Monster Monster is available over at monstermonstermonster.com (go figure) for £26.99 (appx. $44 USD).

The guys over at XCM are at it once more with another cool mod you can buy to make your Xbox 360 just that much better.

The new XCM Crystal Controller Kit not only redresses your 360 controller in a spiffy clear skin, but it also adds a brand new oversize D-pad that’s designed to prevent you from mistakenly pressing it in the wrong direction.

I can speak from experience when I say there’s nothing worse than accidentally selecting that plasma rifle when you meant to select the rocket launcher.

Of course, the best part of the Crystal Controller is that it comes pre-wired with a gorgeous array of nine colorful LEDs which illuminate the A/B/X/Y, back, start, dashboard and shoulder buttons.

You can get your grubby little paws on the complete Crystal Controller kit over on RenChi for $29.90.

The guys who designed this LEGO block lamp managed to dig up some sort of industrial-strength blocks that won’t melt into a pile of smelly goo when subjected to the heat of a lightbulb.

What makes the Block Light really cool is the fact that you can rearrange the pieces into pretty much any configuration you’d like.

The kit comes with 219 small, 16 medium, and 4 large heat-resistant clear acrylic blocks which can hold up to the heat of a 40-watt lightbulb. Of course, if snapping all those blocks has you intimidated, you could always buy one of these giant LEGO block lamps instead.

Ready to build your own custom lamp? Head on over to RED5 and plunk down your £25 (appx. $45 USD) for the kit. Keep in mind that RED5 is located in the UK, which operates on 240-volt power, so you might need to swap out the plug and lightbulb for use in North America.

Ever find the need to use your computer while standing out in the rain? Me neither. While the handful of folks who really need to could drop a few thousand bucks on a military-grade waterproof laptop, here’s a much simpler, brute-force solution for keeping your laptop safe and dry on a rainy day.

Just slip your laptop into one of these oversize plastic sleeves, press the zip seal closed, and it protects your precious portable from the elements. Once your laptop is safely inside the bag, it should resist drips, rainwater and dust (and presumably spills of Red Bull too).

Keep in mind that the design isn’t 100% waterproof, as there are holes in the back to provide ventilation for your computer. That said, I don’t recommend throwing your laptop into the swimming pool in any event.

Japan’s Thanko offers the weather resistant plastic sleeves in two sizes, so most laptops should fit in one or the other. They retail for ¥1980 each (appx. US$20). Now all you have to do is figure out how to read Japanese, and convince them to ship them overseas.

In the mean time, start breaking out some Ziploc freezer bags and see what you can MacGyver together for yourself.

A while back, I reported on James Clar’s cool 3D cubes which could display images using a grid of about 1000 LEDs connected to a computerized controller. While Clar’s cubes are simply amazing, they can only display monochrome images. Now, a company in China has taken the same concept and created a multi-color version.

Created by Chinese display manufacturer Seekway, this prototype 3D LED display cube was created using a 16x16x16 grid of interconnected color LEDs (that’s a whopping 4096 individual diodes).

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The system is capable of displaying animations at up to 30 frames per second and each dot can be individually addressed for both color and intensity.

Now that the prototype is complete, Seekway is gearing up to produce versions with grids as large as 48x48x48, which will require more than 110,000 LEDs. Wow.

While Nextime’s Fallen Numeral clock does have a functional time mechanism, it really couldn’t give a damn about the actual time. Sure, the hands will move if you put a battery in there, but I certainly wouldn’t point them to the proper locations on the dial or that would defeat the purpose.

The clock measures just under 14-inches square and features a frosted glass background with black numerals.
The display features a simulated analog clock face along with a digital readout for a secondary time zone. It’s also got day, date and alarm functions so it’ll even work as a bedside clock if you don’t mind the lack of backlighting. Plus, it’s battery-powered so you won’t have any cords running around. The World Panel Clock is available from CB2 for $24.95.

Designers Soner Ozenc and John Wischhusen created these electroluminescent butterflies called GloWings. Each see-through winged critter is loaded with blue electroluminescent wire to produce a soft blue-green glow. They can be hung on a wall, or from a ceiling, and look really cool when you have a bunch of them hanging together in a group.

They can run on either AAA batteries or on AC current (it sounds like they only include a European A/C adapter, so you might need to grab your own). You can net these butterflies for yourself from Generate for $139 USD each.

The clear, ice-like acrylic case inspired the name “Alaska” for this LCD calculator. While the pictures might make it look white, you can really see all the way through it, meaning that it transforms into whatever color lies beneath it.

When looking at the calculator from off-angle, the numbers virtually vanish beneath the tall cylindrical buttons. However, when looking head-on, the digits are completely visible. I also dig the cool dot-matrix LCD screen that’s got mod square pixels. The manufacturer, Area Plus, also makes a version with removable buttons “for fun & play game,” but I’m not sure why you’d want to do that.

The Alaska acrylic calculator can be found on Japanese online boutique Cataloger, and retails for ¥3675 (about $32 USD).

I’m always struck by the graceful simplicity of Phillipe Starck’s watch designs. His latest creations are as dramatic as anything else I’ve seen in his past collections. The highlight of these as-yet-unnamed watches is their unique see-through case design.

From what I’ve heard, the metal of the inner part of the display has been cantilevered out into a clear section of the metal case to produce a dramatic face that you can see right through. A textured leather band provides a nice contrast to the ultra-modern watch face.

Pricing hasn’t yet been revealed for these latest Starck watches, but I’ve been told to look for them on the Fossil website this Fall.

[UPDATE 8/28: These watches are now available here. The square version is called the Starckore and the round version is called the Satelitum, and they range in price from $150 to $160.]
