Still figuring out what to get the video game fanatic in your life this holiday season? Well, if they already own all the consoles, and bought every game you thought about buying them, perhaps you should think about getting them some of these awesome arcade button drink coasters.

I love these drinkUP coasters which look like giant versions of classic arcade buttons. They look just like those concave Happ buttons you’d find on your favorite arcade machines.

They come packaged in sets of four coasters, and are available in either a four-color pack, or with buttons for 1 through 4-player modes. Why not buy a set of each? You can order them over at Surface Tension, where they sell for £9.99 a set, or £17.99 for both sets including UK shipping, and £12.99 (~$20 USD) a set, or £21.99 (~$35 USD) for both including shipping outside of the UK.

I have an insane fear of heights. Even just looking over the railing when I’m on the third floor of the mall makes my stomach just a wee bit queasy. That said, you probably won’t expect me to hop on any roller coasters soon, but that’s just what I did when I went on a trip last week to a theme park.

It was an indoor roller coaster in the dark with “twists, turns, and sudden drops,” but only for a couple of feet and nothing that kids couldn’t handle. Although I admit that yes, I did scream my head off and walked away with wobbly knees.

So for those who prefer to go at their own speed and avoid the loops and hoops, there’s the Crouching Tiger and Turtle.

The name is obviously a play on the title of the movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. They changed just the right words, I think, because there’s no hidden dragons on this “coaster”, because instead of riding along to crazy speeds and going for the ride of your life, you can instead choose to walk the path of the coaster.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The walkable roller coaster was brought to life by sculptors Ulrich Genth and Heike Mutter. It’s located in Duisburg, Germany, and is made from steel and zinc. A ticket to walk this one-of-a-kind creation costs 1.7 Euros (or about $2.30), but it’s the plane ticket to Duisburg that’s going to burn a hole in your pocket. But if you happen to be going there for the holidays, then make sure to drop by and give it a <del>whirl</del> run.

Created by CbSew, each set of four coasters comes with a yellow “Y”, blue “X”, red “B” and green “A” button to keep your coffee table from getting ruined by all those cans of Mountain Dew, Red Bull and Bawls. The Xbox Guide button is nowhere to be found, though. I guess a set of five coasters would be kinda weird anyway.

Each coaster is made using full color matte images transferred onto a micro-weave polyester surface, backed by durable black non-skid rubber. You can grab a set for just $10 (USD) over at CbSew’s Etsy shop. PlayStation fans, there’s no word on when you’ll be able to get a version with a square, circle, triangle and X.

No one likes the ugly sight of a condensation ring on the coffee table. This is a problem. Thankfully, there’s a solution, and it’s full of math.

These coasters will match perfectly with your number lamp and your equation bookshelf, so long as all you care about is, uh, math.

The math coasters, which are available in a variety of classy colors (as pictured above), are sold in sets of five for $22. Numbers are, unfortunately, not included. It’s Etsy, though… if you search long enough, you’ll probably find something to complement your coaster set.

Created by the designers over at Meninos, the set includes the familiar icons for various web syndication formats like RSS & XML. Each set includes a whopping 16 coasters, so you can give one to every guest at your next party. Or maybe one for each of your blog subscribers.

Each coaster is handmade from MDF plywood and wrapped with a custom cut vinyl decal. They’re then backed with an anti-slip rubber backing and coated with a varnish to protect the finish.

You can grab a set of the RSS coasters over at the Meninos store for $60 (USD).

For some strange reason, I never thought I’d write a story about floppy disk coasters twice. But these really floppy, floppy disk coasters I found over on Etsy today were just too good to be ignored.

Modeled after the truly retro 5-1/4″ floppy disk, these soft coasters are handmade from colorful felt, and just like their real-life cousins, are guaranteed not to store any of your data reliably. But they should keep your coffee table free of stains.

San Jose crafter TheGeekery handsews these coaster floppies from EcoSpun felt, which ironically happens to be recycled from the plastic bottles that your drink probably just came out of.

Each set sells for $28 (USD) and comes with four brightly colored floppies, packed in one of those old school floppy disk cases that used to clutter my closets back in the day. And if you prefer to go with classic black floppies, you can even specify your own custom colors.

So who really needs flash drives, hard disks and optical storage? I proclaim ‘let’s bring floppies back!’ Show your pro-floppy support by picking up a set over at TheGeekery’s Etsy shop.

When Luigi looked exactly the same as Mario, except for his white and green clothes. Relive those days with a glass of beer and these classic Super Mario Bros. coasters.

Created by the guys over at Brazil’s Meninos design (the same guys who make these awesome hard drives), these icon coasters are a great gift for any iPhone addict. All your favorite applications are there, from Maps to Calculator, from iPod to Settings. Ah, Settings.

Each coaster measures 85mm square (about 3.34″) and is made from sturdy MDF plywood, then wrapped with a premium vinyl decal and durable varnish to protect the design. A thin rubber layer on the bottom keeps the coasters from slipping around.

Sets of 16 coasters retail for $60 USD over at the Meninos online shop. Personally, I’m looking forward to when they open up the Coaster App Store.

These fun drink coasters may just look like an abstract dot pattern on the surface, but thanks to some cleverly placed perforations, you can actually make your own custom pixel creations out of them.

Each coaster is made up of 110 individual 1cm square “pixels” which are perfed in a way that lets you selectively remove blocks from each square. Through what sort of amounts to “pixel sculpting”, you can create your own personalized designs.

They come in a stack of 50 coasters, which start out conjoined into a 500cm (almost 200″) long chain which can be broken apart into individual pieces. Each square has a random arrangement of color shades, so each coaster is just a little different from the next one.

They’re made from a resilient paper fiber that should hold up to the condensation you might get on the bottom of your cup, or the occasional spill. In addition to the blue palette (which I prefer), there’s also a hot pink version if you’re looking for something a bit more girly.

At this point Pixel Coasters are only available from Taiwanese design retailer 25togo, I’m hoping somebody eventually imports these to the States. A pack of 50 coasters sells for 260 Taiwan Dollars, or just about $8 bucks.

Here’s an ingenius little invention for all you boozehounds out there. Imagine if you will, sitting at your neighborhood watering hole, when the bartender sees a little flashing light out of the corner of his eye and just knows it’s time to refill your cocktail.

That’s just what these coasters do. Simply set one under your glass, and when your drink is nearly empty, it’ll get to blinking, alerting the bartender that it’s time for another shot.

The geeks over at Sentilla created these LED loaded electronic coasters that can automatically judge when there’s a drink on top of them, or if your glass is nearly out. Each one features an embedded mini-computer, running a custom Java application which handles all the smarts.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

According to the guys who built them, the coasters can even communicate wirelessly with one another, so they even could be used for interactive tabletop games.

About the only thing they won’t do is tell you whether your glass is half empty or half full. You’ll have to figure that out for yourself.

The proposed new emergency escape system is actually based on those vertical drop roller-coasters that have popped up at amusement parks around the country.

The idea is that if something were to happen on the launchpad, endangered flight crew could hop into the roller coaster which would rapidly drop towards the ground, then away from the location of the rocket. The proposed
