Just because something serves a decent enough purpose doesn’t mean that it should get made or be manufactured and released for public consumption. Remember the Privacy Shell that starts out as accessories like handbags or hats that can be folded out to form, well, a shell that can separate you from the rest of the world? If you don’t, I still do, and for a reason: because it looks pretty strange.

And then there are functional objects that could be useful, if only they looked like something a sane and normal person would wear, like the Umbrella Coat Raincoat.

The Umbrella Coat Raincoat is exactly what its name suggests: it’s a raincoat that’s a coat (no duh) and an umbrella. But it’s not just like your average raincoat that ends somewhere below or above your knees. No, it’s actually a full-length pajama-like raincoat that looks like an oversized jumpsuit with an umbrella hoodie that’s larger than life.

The Umbrella Coat Raincoat is a design by Athanasia Leivaditou, who wanted to come up with the most foolproof and convenient raincoat there is, since your hands will actually be free to do whatever they please while you brave the storm outside.

Now that you’ve seen it, let me ask you this simple questions: Would you rather put on the Umbrella Coat Raincoat, or get soaked in the rain?

While wearable TVs are things that are usually seen in science-fiction, Dave Forbes decided to make his own 60″ TV in the form of an LED video coat. It looks pretty fascinating, though it could make a good portion of the population queasy looking at all of this motion while somebody is wearing it.

The LED TV Coat has only got 160×120 resolution, so it won’t beat your HDTV, however it’s wearable and portable, so that’s definitely cool. Dave can pipe video into it through an iPod or media player, and the whole thing is powered by a 12V battery. It’s made up out of a bunch of flex boards with LEDs on them, connected by ribbon cables, then hot glued to the coat. A digitizing board converts the video signals into RGB serial data streams to generate the LED images.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Dave built this coat to wear to Burning Man, where he’ll probably try to do some mass hallucinations. For now, you can catch The Simpsons being streamed on his LED TV coat.

In Texas, the weather can change at a moment’s notice. We tend to not change plans because of poor weather until the last second because it can be flooding one minute and sunny the next. I have been caught in the rain before unprepared, and if you are a hiker, this new wearable tent has surfaced that might catch your attention.

We don’t have many details on the thing, but really you don’t need any to get the idea what it does. It’s a poncho that you can wear with a hood to keep the rain off. If you need a place, to sit you can stake the thing down and it makes its own little tent. That is the cool part about the thing.

The stupid part comes in the execution. If you are wearing this to keep the rain off you and you decide to turn it into a tent, you will get all wet going outside to stake the thing down. I guess you have to wear another poncho to stay dry while you go out to stake it down. It also lacks a bottom so you get to sit on the wet ground.

So what do you do if you’re a geek and you like to travel with hoards of electronics for a few days, but you are too lazy to carry around a suitcase or bag of some sort? You pick up one of these SCOTTEVEST Carry-On coats.

The thing appears to be a trench coat length jacket festooned with an unbelievable number of pockets (33 to be exact). If they ever do a geek parody of the scene in the Matrix where Neo and company come in wearing jackets packed with weapons, this would be the wardrobe.

The thing has pockets for the iPad, iPhone, MP3 player, glasses, cameras, personal care items like tooth brushes and those tiny shampoos you can get on the plane with and more. The weirdest pockets are so big, they can even hold your extra clothes and shoes. I wonder if you can even walk in this thing – and I can only imagine what fun it will be to get through airport security with one of these fully loaded.

Surface Tension’s new hangUP arcade coat hooks use real joystick balls and buttons to hang up all of your coats, umbrellas, man purses and any other hangy stuff you have hanging around.

Coming sometime early this year, they’ll be available in 3UP and 4UP versions. You can pick your own joystick ball colors too. The standard models will ship in black walnut wood, but they’re happy to take custom orders for other materials too.

Me, I want one that looks like the front of an old Missile Command cabinet, complete with cigarette burns. It’s too bad you can’t hang a coat on a trackball. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but if you’d like to inquire about ordering one you can contact Surface Tension here.
