Ah, Robocop. Needless to say that I’ve watched the movie quite a few times and I found it interesting to see that someone had done an illustration of what the insides of Robocop might actually look like.

You’ll probably remember that Robocop was dismembered quite a few times in the movies. It always messed him up, but he was able to come back and beat the bad guys, with his gun that holstered so coolly in his thigh.

He’s one heavy cyborg that doesn’t have much meat on his metal bones. From the looks of things, he’s definitely more robot than Murphy. It’s not like Peter Weller was the most expressive actor anyhow.

I now know the real reason why the white iPhone 4 has been delayed: it’s either the mythical underpants gnomes from South Park or the teeny weeny white supremacists that have decided to mess with Apple’s production schedule!

I like Apple products, but there’s nothing that rubs me the wrong way like the debacle of iPhone 4 Antennagate. In my mind, Apple should have recalled the product. How can they sell a product that just drops your calls if you hold it the wrong way?

Well, I guess that I’m not alone in this and this comic by Joy of Tech really made me laugh. Seriously though, I wouldn’t be surprised if the white iPhone never comes out.

Building on Pokémon’s fiction while sharing a piece of her childhood, artist Maré Odomo created a few Pokémon-themed comics titled Letters to an Absent Father, in which the franchise’ original protagonist Ash Ketchum writes letters – which he may or may not have actually sent – to his dad, who has been mentioned but never actually appeared in the Pokémon cartoons or games.

Dawwww. So far Odomo has published three of these, with one more on the way.

He has this to say about the third comic, seen below: “Fun fact: The colors in Ash’s room are based on my the bedroom I had when I was 10 or so. This was also around the time my parents started sleeping in different rooms and I was reeeeally confused.”

The drawing of Ash crying is just… hey what’s that behind you? *wipes eyes* Watch out for the fourth comic on Odomo’s Tumblr or Flickr page; he also has lots of other cool comics and art on the latter.

I know this dude who is in his 30′s, spends all his time at the gym (trying to look like The Hulk), has a room full of Hulk action figures, and combs his hair like Wolverine. Seriously. You could say that the guy is obsessed with comic books. I bet he will have a nerdgasm when he hears about the new Marvel licensed HDTVs from RTC23.

I’m not sure how an unknown company pulled this geek coup off, but I bet it has a lot to do with major TV makers having too much respect for their products to adorn them with comic book drawings and then not aim the things at kids. With the prices these sets demand, kids aren’t the target market here.

The TVs come in a wide range of characters with favorites like The Hulk, Wolverine, Captain America and many more. The sets come in LCD versions with 22″, 32″, 42″, and 55″ screens. LED backlit versions are available with 40″ and 46″ screens. All of the sets have a sure-to-get-annoying splash screen that shows for eight seconds when the TV is first turned on with the comic book heroes and the heroes are featured on the lower bezel of the sets. Resolutions vary with screen size between 720p and 1080p with prices ranging from $339 to $1989 (USD).

Proving that geeks can drop dough like a rock star or rapper, this Monday someone bought a copy of the first issue of Action Comics – in which Superman made his first appearance – for $1,000,000 (USD). That’s 10 million times the comic’s original price. It was sold at Comic Connect, whose founder Stephen Fishler said that the million dollar comic was in “very fine” condition. Yeah, that totally justifies the price tag.

But yeah, I guess the comic is a bit more valuable now than when it was first published. It led to the creation of a hero so powerful that barely anyone could write a decent story about him. Poor Superman. His strength literally is his weakness. Anyway, I still say the buyer was far more sane than the people who bid for the cracked glass stair from an Apple store.

Are you a movie buff? Then you’re probably cautiously excited about the upcoming Watchmen movie. Cautiously, because whenever you start to wonder about the movie a horde of Cheetos-smelling chubby geeks with 90s fashion sensibilities immediately surrounds you, desperate to drop knowledge on anyone who’s not into comics and blather on about the Keene Act and the Black Freighter and the first Nite Owl and how the panels on the page of one issue are symmetrical or finish in reverse order or how Rorschach looks like -

Since you’re a geek yourself, only another sort of geek, you can’t give these comic fiends a good ol’ shut the hell up punch. So go do what you do best: acquire knowledge. You want to arm yourself with just enough knowledge so you can appreciate the movie without having to ask a person who will not ever, ever never ever shut up once he starts talking.

As always the Internet can help. Just head-on to Rotten Tomatoes and read their concise and well written character profiles. You’ll get to know the important info about the heroes of Watchmen – their real names, history, inspiration – as well as tidbits about the villains (including former US president Nixon). Of course you can always check out the official site:

The upside of the Warner Bros. site is that it’s flashy and has audio and video clips as well as goodies like wallpapers, but if you’re looking for information then the Rotten Tomatoes profiles are much easier to read.

So go arm yourself! You know what, you still have time. Go buy the book. And a bag of Cheetos. And a six-pack of Yoo-hoos.

Here’s a desktop toy that’s sure to draw stares from your office-mates. What could say “I fly my geek flag, and I’m proud of it” more than a glowing radioactive, goggle-sporting USB sheep for your cubicle?

Not much, I say. This USB critter is based on the namesake of the offbeat Seamour Sheep comic series, which follows the misadventures of Seamour and his anipal, Marty the Mole. Just plug him into your USB port, turn down the lights, and bask in the glow of electric sheep.

Seamour radiates an otherworldly green, presumably after he ate some radioactive waste, and Marty hit him up with the appropriate warning label in this particular episode.

There’s no word if Seamour actually will expose you to a high dose of radiation, or if he’s really powered by a bunch of green LEDs. Guess you’ll just have to find out for yourself. You can get your hands on this limited-edition (only 500 sheep) Seamour collectible over at Chicago’s (my hometown) awesome Rotofugi toy store for $69 USD.

Why dig through stacks and stacks of individual comic books when you can quickly find the exact one you’re looking for using a wall-sized über-cool Minority Report-like user interface?

A project developed by Daniel Stødle and a team of PhD students from Norway’s University of Tromsø, this huge display wall can detect gestures to navigate through a catalog of over 3 years worth of comic strips, quickly jumping to any individual strip in seconds.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The enormous display is comprised of a grid of 28 synchronized video projectors, forming a whopping 7168 x 3072 display resolution (that’s over 22 megapixels). A system of 16 cameras and 9 computers detect and process user movements. Using hand gestures like those used on the iPhone, you can scale, rotate, pan and tilt across the collection almost instantaneously. A simple double-snap of your fingers makes the display zoom in an extra level of depth to the location where you snapped, while a single snap zooms back out.

Of course, the interface isn’t just designed for navigating comic strips, but is a proof of concept for using large scale displays and gesture recognition to navigate huge numbers of visual assets quickly. Very cool stuff indeed.
