The first episode of the new geek series has aired and the episode is up on YouTube right now. The series is called Super Power Beat Down and the initial episode pits two well-known Batmobiles against each other in a drag race. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the 1966 Batmobile that was the main ride in the series’ 120 episodes.

The other vehicle in a drag race is the 1989 swoopy black cartoon car from the 1989 Tim Burton version of Batman. I would’ve preferred to see Christian Bale’s Batmobile or Tumbler in this race personally. After talking specs for a few minutes, the builder comes on and gives some hard facts about the cars. I will say with the horsepower the guy claims, I seriously doubt the quarter-mile times he quotes. It certainly should take more than 300 hp put down a 10-second quarter-mile run in such large cars.

Doubts about performance aside, racing two legendary superhero cars against one another buys the guy more the little leeway. At about 7:45 mark in the video they decide to just line the cars up and run them. I won’t tell you who wins, but I think the race was rigged given the outcome.

Did you ever think that the Avengers would visit the Hundred Acre Wood? Well, illustrator Charles Paul Wilson III did and he redesigned the iconic Marvel characters as if they were about to visit Christopher Robin and Pooh Bear.

From the panels, it looks like they arrived in the Hundred Acre Wood through some kind of a “Werm Hole Exparimunt.” The Hulk masquerades as Pooh, while Wolverine is Tigger.

The funniest looking character of them all has to be Apocalypse. There’s something wrong about this major and evil villain looking cute.

The paintings were drawn using watercolors and they look pretty spiffy. These paintings are part of a series he made for Avengers Art Appreciation for Marvel. His own version of the cover will hit comic book stores on April 18, 2012 for the issue Incredible Hulk #7. You can check out more of Charles Paul Wilson III’s art at his Deviant Art site.

These X-Babies would make a dangerous class for any teacher. Can you imagine the temper tantrums? And yes, I know it couldn’t happen because mutants in the Marvel universe manifest their powers during puberty.

Skottie created these images after he had worked his magic on some Star Wars pictures. Skottie Young and Scott Morse collaborate on a bi-weekly online comic called Scatterwood. The Xavier mutants in pre-school were used for badges at HeroesCon back in 2010.

Have you ever wondered what happened to superheroes when they get older? There have been a few different forays into the subject in comics, but Andreas Englund decided to examine the situation with a bit more flair. His series of aging superhero paintings have popped up all over the place, and I have to say that they are pretty cool.

Englund is a Swedish artist and portrays his superhero confronting the vagaries of old age. You can find his character trying to open a jar of jam, dropping his shopping, and taking a break after a fight. The character was created in 2004 and Englund plans on trying to explore different media to make him shine.

The paintings are vivid and humorous, which is probably why people like them so much. I’d actually like to find out the name of the superhero, although he does seem to be wearing a logo that and drive a car that looks an awful lot like The Punisher’s.

You probably already know that Bryan Lee O’Malley’s popular Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is getting a movie adaptation. It turns out that there will be a Scott Pilgrim video game too, although that seems to be inevitable, given the numerous video game references in the comic. The game will be published by Ubisoft as a timed exclusive, coming out on the PSN this August (no date yet for the Xbox 360 version). Game Informer went hands-on with an early build of the game, and they were pretty happy about it, although admittedly they’re big fans of the comic to begin with.

As fans of the comic can see, the game’s graphics are very similar to O’ Malley’s art. Astute citizens of the Internet will also be familiar with the graphics – Paul Robertson, who made Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Street Fight and Kings of Power 4 Billion%, is supervising the art direction for the game.

Although it should come as no surprise, the game seems to be targeted towards people who’ve already read the comic book. There will be four playable characters, Scott Pilgrim, his girlfriend, and Scott’s bandmates. Each character has a unique set of moves, which can be augmented by leveling them up and by buying stuff at “Rivery City Ransom-esque” shops. It’s not all brawling either; one sequence of the game involved a “Guitar Hero-style bass-off”. Ubisoft also promises lots of unlockable content, like characters, modes and levels, so all in all this game should have quite a bit of replay value.

Check out Game Informer for the full article. I really don’t get why this is a timed exclusive though – the interest for the game will be at its peak in August, when the movie is released. Why risk losing buyers by releasing the Xbox version later? Or will this game be enough for Scott Pilgrim fans who don’t already have a PS3 to give in and get one?

Who loves writing term papers? Me neither. And if this archeological find is any indication, our beloved comic book heroes must have hated writing them too, mainly because they suck at it. Well, not everyone – the nerdy Peter Parker got an A+ on his paper, although I doubt his teacher knows the tragic story behind this:

This one’s from Batman. He must have been one creepy student:

If Bruce became a member of the CSI, he wouldn’t be searching for DNA, he’d be dealing Kicks N’ Punches. Am I right? Finally, here’s one from Lois Lane; although she isn’t a superhero, this one is just too good to pass up:

Everyone expected a comic app for the iPad, and Marvel delivered. Marvel Comics for iPad is a lot like iTunes, combining a comic book store and a reader into one app. The reader allows for page-by-page as well as frame-by-frame scrolling, and there are thumbnails at the bottom that let users skip to any page. There seems to be no two-page view though, which may render two-page spreads useless.

As you can see, some titles are priced at $1.99 (USD); Boing Boing’s Xeni Jardin says there are even free comics on the store. Here she is with her hands-on of the app:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Read more about the app at Boing Boing. While we’ve long been able to read comics on our computers, the integration of a book store into the app makes this a very good solution for both Marvel and fans. The former finally has a competitive alternative to unofficial comic book scans, while the latter now has an even easier way of getting comics.

I hope that Marvel includes some sort of buyback option, where users can “sell” their digital copies back to Marvel, basically deleting their copy in exchange for credit which can be accumulated and used to buy more comics. That way it’d be more affordable for people to try out new series and franchises.

Next month, Marvel will release a slew of comic books with alternate covers that feature different renditions of Iron Man. Marvel calls its gimmick Iron Man by Design, and oddly enough, none of the books are Iron Man titles. But that doesn’t really matter, because the covers are delicious. Here’s my favorite, a sleek, Norse-like take on Shellhead by Adi Granov.

Check out the gallery for my other picks:

Here’s a new and different idea for a DIY iPod case: use pages of old comics. A little masking tape, a few pages of killer images, and the ability to cut a straight line with scissors is all it took to assemble this chic custom case.

The blue-tinted case, shown above, was the first, made from a found box of vintage French comics. The black-and-white case? That was the second project by Craftster member julibooli, who found the first project so easy that she immediately followed it up by repeating the process for a friend. I wish more of my friends would make me gadget cases from nifty artwork. Or that they could use scissors.

Think they look good from the front? Check out the back!

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that look the coolest.

Topless Robot posted the trailers for the upcoming Iron Man and Wolverine anime. According to Mania, both features will be shown on Animax in spring 2010. Both of them will be produced by super studio Madhouse, responsible for classics like Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Trigun, Millennium Actress, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Hajime no Ippo and many other awesome stuff that I want to watch again.

So yeah, here’s the Iron Man trailer:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The evil dude’s transformation was awesome. He looks a bit like Guyver. Mmmm Iron Man vs. Guyver. And here’s the not so awesome Wolverine trailer:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

So many things went wrong. So many things. The anime is supposedly an expanded version – that’s one way of putting it – of a 1980s Wolverine vs. ninjas storyline by Chris Claremont. Details which are now moot because of that trailer. It could be the tale of a power balladeer ninja for all I care.

Award-winning digital entertainment outfit littleloud created a promotional flash game for the upcoming Watchmen movie. Yes Fanny McFanboy! It’s a game based on the graphic novel! What’s that? You can’t wait to play as Rorschach? Well you can’t play as Rorschach. Actually you can’t play as any of the Watchmen characters. Because the heroes in the arcade-style game are from the Minutemen, the superhero team that came before the Watchmen.

As you can see you can choose to play as Captain Commando or Baby the first Nite Owl or the first Silk Spectre. You then side-scroll your way along the crime-riddled , mailbox-riddled and trash can-riddled streets of 1942 New York.

Since I am a member of the superhero team Expertgamingmans, I’ll give you some tips on playing the game. Pay attention because the game has a reward for players who finish it.

Protip #1: This one’s a warning for the young gamers out there who have never played an old school beat ‘em up: THE ENEMIES ARE MORONS. Aside from wearing the exact same golf cap + turtleneck combo, they will also move to the same axis that you are as they approach you. They will do this even if there’s an obstacle in the way, such as the fire hydrant above. So they get stuck. You can then punch or kick them til they die. Or you can just watch them pile up behind a fire hydrant.

Protip #2: This is top secret stuff: You can wreck the garbage cans and mailboxes for extra points! Destructible environment FTW! That’s my Nite Owl in the 2nd stage of the game; as you can see my expertise allows me to use the strategy I mentioned in Protip #1 at will.

After 3 stages you get to square off with Moloch the Mystic. Protip #3: Apparently in 1942 New York, ‘Mystic’ means ‘knife thrower’. After defeating Moloch the game rewards you with…

A stream of the whole Watchmen movie! Of course not. You get to watch a trailer that you’ve probably seen before. But if you’re a real gamer, you know that the side scrolling journey is the prize itself.

Do you think you can be the next Leinil Yu, or the next Steve McNiven, or the next Dave Gibbons? If you think so, then good luck. I hope you succeed. I have nothing else to say to you.

But if you’re bored, you might want to check out The Surrealist’s comic book Sound Effect Generator.

Every time you reload the page a different set of sound effects are generated. As you can see they’re not really sounds, they’re words you can use onomatopoeically. Although I can’t think of a thing that can *whum*, I do know that the comic below could have benefited from the Sound Effect Generator.

The Surrealist also has other fun randomly generating stuff, like the Reality TV Generator or The London Evening Standard Headline Generator.

I sure hope Cap didn’t listen to the bad guy.
