We were just talking about some speakers made out of stone, so it’s just a coincidence that this iPhone/iPod dock made out of concrete popped up on my radar screen on the same day.

But unlike those limestone speakers, this sturdy dock is made from cast concrete. The concrete dock was conceived by “guest designer” Aidan Conway-Stuart of obelisk. It’s cast in a deep grey color, and coated with satin sealer to protect its finish too.

The thing cradles your iPhone or iPod nicely on a cut-out section, which has an integrated channel for running your USB to 30-pin cable neatly underneath. The dock connector sticks out of the base, holding your iDevice securely in place. It doesn’t look like it would be easy to tip this thing over.

And if you happen to find yourself face-to-face with an intruder, you can always grab this concrete chunk and use it as a weapon. It looks like it could definitely do some damage.

So if you’re looking for a unique dock for your iPhone or iPod, head on over to Etsy, and you can grab one for $39 (USD). I’d actually like to see an iPad version – I think that’d look really nice too.

I see all sorts of cool projects that geeks come up with where they use LEGO as the medium to build. Even though it comes in a kit, the LEGO Imperial Shuttle is one of my favorites. It’s rare to see an art project where the LEGO bricks themselves are the project though. Over on Etsy you can pick up some strange LEGO bricks that are made from concrete by Tara Ketchum of studio1015. I’m not sure why you would want some concrete bricks, other than the fact that they look cool.

It would be cool if the bricks were larger and you could build big things from them. These little concrete Building Blocks are actually the size of a normal 2 x 4 LEGO brick making them very small. The little bricks are 1 5/8″ x 3/4″ x 1/2″ and they come in sets of six. I wonder if the back of the block has the divots in it for the nubs on the top of the block to sit. It looks like there should be from the way they neatly stack here:

The designer notes that since they are made from concrete each will have a different color and texture. Each set of six blocks will cost you $8.50 with $5 for shipping, though they’re currently sold out.

I’ve seen some crazy ass PC casemods over the years, but this one is definitely one of the nuttier ones I’ve seen in a while. What we have here is a PC with a case made of concrete.

Modder D. Heiße (who was last sighted with a PC in a tree trunk) decided to make the Concretronic for a recent modding contest.

Yes, the case for the PC is made from a single, seamless layer of concrete, wrapped around a curvy metal structure made from welding rods and steel sheets, with embedded plexiglas windows so you can see inside. The substructure of the Concretronic was made from hand-cut aluminum sheets, powder-coated white.

He even managed to come up with cast-concrete power and hard-drive indicators on the front of the case. I also really love the custom HDD and SDD covers on the drives. What a nice design touch.

The whole thing is really a masterwork of casemodding, and if you’re at all interested in how it was built, head on over to The Best Case Scenario for the full build log.

I don’t like coffee much. I like the way it smells sometimes, but I hate the way it tastes. The only way I can imagine coffee being even grosser is if it was brewed with a concrete filter.

This new Lavazza concept espresso machine has surfaced with a body made out of two pieces of molded concrete. The thing looks very industrial and would probably fit right in at Steve Jobs’ house.

The parts that actually make the espresso appear to be stainless steel. The water goes into a drawer for brewing. The only particularly unpleasant sounding part is that the coffee beans appear to go into a hopper that puts them right next to the concrete. Mmmm. Coffee and concrete.

The cement and glass construction of the In Visible City speakers is said to project a powerful, clean sound profile. The compact speakers feature angled corners, which afford them flexibility in placement. However, I prefer the Engrish feature description from their website:

“Stereo Cubic presents the change of light shade by cube modeling, and the cutting declined surface not only presents thickness of stereo, but also allows more various and free placing ways available, and the concrete will make melodious music more vigoroso and steady to create a more comfortable and tasty private space for you.” Yum. Concrete never tasted so good.

The company recently showed a number of other cool contemporary household items at the 2007 Tokyo Designers Week show.
