No princesses were harmed to make these 6″ buns, because they’re made from synthetic hair. I can’t guarantee the safety of synthetic princesses though. They could be clones working for the Empire. By default, the buns are made of auburn hair, but you can also ask for blonde or red hair. The buns will also come with instructions for both temporary and permanent attachment.

Enterprising sewer Carolyn is making these awesome made-to-order <del>wearable Wampa heads</del> Nordic-style helmets which look cool whether you’re into LARPing or or just RPGing.

Carolyn claims that each helmet has “authentic details”, but I doubt a real helmet was ever made of polar fleece. Seriously though it looks awesome, and it seems thick enough to provide ample protection from the cold.

Leonard Carson had been toying with the idea of combining carbon fiber with stormtrooper armor for some time. He managed to convince three of his co-workers join his cause and this is the result. I have to say that these carbon troopers look quite impressive.

I definitely like this all-black look. It seems more appropriate for the Empire than white. Unfortunately, these suits weren’t cheap to fabricate. If you want an inkling, they mention that the cost would be enough to purchase a pretty nice car.

As an alternative, if you want this look, you could try and cover a standard plastic suit with some carbon fiber vinyl decals but you’d never get the finish of these awesome suits.

The armor looks so good, that Carson’s employer, San Diego Composites wants to display one of the suits in their lobby.

While making my customary bedtime lurking on Reddit, I came upon a link that pointed to an “Incredible Dark Knight Cecil (from Final Fantasy IV) custom armor.” Okay, click. Then I came upon these pictures and was thoroughly confused. Was this an action figure? A statue? A scale model? I just had a hard time considering the real answer: it’s a costume.

Believe it or not, there is a man inside that costume. He’s Denver native NeilBombad, who spent about 8 months making the Dark Knight armor of Cecil Harvey, the captain of the Red Wings and main hero of the classic SNES game Final Fantasy IV. He designed and modeled each piece on his own using reference images, then printed the armor on ABS plastic using a 3D printer. NeilBombad said it took over 500 hours to print the whole thing. He then used black ABS glue to fill in and strengthen the plastic. Hours and hours of sanding, priming and painting finally brought the armor to its shiny and solid state.

Tell Cid to fire up the airship and travel to CosBlog for more details and pictures. You can also view NeilBombad’s profile on Cosplay and Acparadise for more pics. This just trumped the Steampunk Iron Man as my favorite cosplay.

Check out this amazing Clone Trooper Halloween costume, that was made for a 10-year old by his Star Wars-loving dad Parrster. The most amazing thing is that it’s mostly made out of cardboard and papier-mâché. It definitely looks awesome. The only missing piece is the boots!

Parrster downloaded detailed images of the Clone Trooper outfit from the web, and then started working on the costume. He started with the breastplate, and moved on to the helmet. The helmet took the longest and it really does look pretty accurate. In case you plan on trying to do this yourself, the cardboard he used is called “pasted boxboard.”

Of course, it’s not 100% cardboard. There’s some clear plastic, foam, fabric, glue and Velcro in order to hold it all together, and a blue LED in the back of the helmet’s “mohawk.” With a little patience and some TLC, you can also make your own costume for next Halloween. While Clone Troopers are cool, I’d make a cardboard Jango Fett or a retro Boba Fett.

If you still don’t have a Halloween costume, you’re probably left to the dregs of the random ill-fitting Scooby Doo and Teletubbies costumes at your local Wal-Mart. But if you and a buddy can spare your iPad 2s for the night, you could end up being the life of the party.

By taking a pair of iPad 2s and strapping them to his chest and back using duct tape, Technabob reader Mark Rober managed to make it look like he had a huge gaping hole in his torso. The trick is actually pretty simple to pull off. Just connect the two devices via Wi-Fi (or a pocket hotspot), and turn on a FaceTime chat between the two.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The one in the back uses its front-facing camera to capture what’s behind you, and the one in the front grabs what’s in front. They each show the others live video on-screen, creating an awesome illusion that makes it look like you can see right through your body. While I’ve seen this idea done before, it’s always required a ton of build time and hacking. This idea only requires a couple of iPad 2s, some duct tape and a Wi-Fi network.

Of course, it’s not exactly the cheapest Halloween costume, but if you do have a couple of iPad 2s lying around, it’s actually pretty easy. And if you have a few iPhone 4s on hand, you could even create a bullet-riddled corpse effect.

[Thanks for the tip, Mark!]

Redditor adriannezy wanted to “participate in Halloween at the absolute minimum level” at her workplace, so she went as a QR code. Well, not exactly. She went as a clever geek, who found a way to be seen wearing a costume without actually wearing one in real life. Confused? Get a QR code scanner – there are several free apps that can do this – and use it to read the code on her shirt:

I used the RedLaser app to scan it. If everything went right, your scanner should direct you to this link, which contains this picture:

At first I thought the QR code would make a costume pop up over her shirt. Guess I was hoping it would be an augmented reality target instead, so I am a little disappointed. Still, it’s certainly a nerdy, if roundabout way of costuming.

There’s only a couple of days before Halloween, so if you haven’t already picked out your costume, you might want to get it together now. If you happen to be a fan of Inspector Gadget, here’s a fun idea to bring that costume to life.

Using a variety of found objects and hardware, Laura (aka prixprix) created this awesome Inspector Gadget costume, complete with functional flying contraption. And while it doesn’t actually achieve lift-off at any point, the rotor is actually motorized, so maybe she could get off the ground with enough of an updraft. Here, check it out:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Pretty nifty, eh? If you want to give it a try for yourself, Laura has documented her build over on Instructables for you to follow for yourself. Anyone who can actually get theirs to propel them into the air will get a gold star in my book. Go, go, Gadget!

It’s based on Isaac Clarke’s Engineering RIG Suit from Dead Space 2. He had initially only made the helmet, but he mentions that it was freaking people out, so he decided to complete a whole custom costume to go with the headgear. It’s kind of amazing how he was able to complete it, and he didn’t go by half measures.

Halloween is just days away, so the number of cool, geeky costumes hitting my screen is starting to increase each day we get closer. So far, the early winner for the 2011 Halloween season is this Nikon D3 DSLR costume, which is actually fully-functional.

Ok, when I say it’s fully-functional, I don’t mean that it has interchangeable lenses, but it does snap high-quality digital pictures. It was built by Tyler Card, who happens to actually be a professional photographer – so that’s only fitting.

Tyler built it using a bunch of cardboard and a five-gallon paint bucket for the lens. Hidden inside is an actual Nikon DSLR, and it displays photos on the Dell LCD laptop screen on the back. It’s even got a functional Alienbees flash, and working shutter button.

This custom proton pack was recently seen at this year’s NYC Comic Con. A lot of time went into it to make it look this good.

The cosplayer was part of a crew of Ghostbusters, but he stood out from the crowd of Venkman, Stantz and Spengler as much as Ernie Hudson did in the original movie. Apparently, the pack took about six months to make and weighs about 45 pounds. It lights up and even needs a bit of calibration between ghostbusting sessions.

Attention Zelda fans! If you’ve been debating whether or not to show up as Link at your office Halloween party this year, I think I might have the thing that pushes you over the edge. Check out this beautifully-crafted Hylian shield, perfect for protecting yourself from your co-workers (and Octorocs).

As you can see, this isn’t one of those cheap mass-produced plastic Hylian shields you can buy at a costume store. It’s a handmade shield, crafted from wood, and wrapped with hand-tooled and dyed leather and upholstery tacks. It was made by Etsy seller Aradani, who creates all sorts of fun coplay accessories for conventions and Renaissance festivals. This particular Hylian shield measures 24″ tall by 18″ wide, and is based on the silver one Link donned as the Fierce Diety in Majora’s Mask, but can also be customized with the more traditional metallic blue if you’d rather go with that look.

It’s priced at $400 (USD) over on Etsy, so it’s not exactly pocket change, but if you’re a serious Zelda fanatic, it’s a worthwhile addition to your collection, and there’s clearly a ton of labor that went into making it.

It’s a little-known fact, but apparently Boba Fett fought his earliest battles in the old Norse seas. At least that’s what I’ve gleaned from my phony-made-up-history lesson learned from staring at this Boba Fett helmet:

Paul McCue (aka “Kyoob“) – the guy who made this crazy-looking headgear – is calling it “steampunk” but other than the rivets and the weathered metal look, there’s really nothing steampunk about it. But those horns are definitely Viking. I know, because I saw it once in a Hagar the Horrible cartoon – and then later at an NFL game.

Regardless, it’s pretty awesome. I only wish he had made a backpack with jets to go with it.

If you’re looking to stand out from the crowd this Halloween – or just want to freak out your coworkers any other day of the year – you can grab this crazy-looking thing over at Etsy now for $250 (USD).

Fans of the classic Battlestar Galactica series will be drooling over this epic bit of cosplay gear, just announced. It’s a helmet based on the ones worn by Colonial Viper pilots, and it’s a perfect replica of the original.

This 1:1 scale replica helmet is made from fiberglass and resin, and was cast from an original helmet from the classic TV series. It even has lights built into the opening, just like the ones worn by Dirk Benedict, Richard Hatch and that other guy who played Boomer. If you have any doubt how authentic this thing looks, have a look at the original here:

Now to spoil your Halloween plans, this helmet isn’t going to ship until December 2011, so you’re going to have to cool your heels if you want one. And priced at $599 (USD), I’m sure you’re not all going to rush out and buy one anyhow.

But if you’re a super-fan of the original BSG, you might need to head on over to Entertainment Earth and place your pre-order now. Only 500 are being made, so chop-chop. To complete the look, of course, you’ll need to drop another 500 starbucks on a Colonial Viper jacket to go with.

There’s nothing like a good geek weapon to get me drooling, and this prop gun based on the M-29 Incisor Rifle from Mass Effect 2 has me salivating in spades.

The cosplay gun was created by prop-maker Zander Brandt of ZPROPS, and it’s a dead-ringer for the M-29 sniper rifle from the game, including all the little details, and a perfect paintjob.

It was created for a client who is working on a matching costume to go with. I’d think it would look quite perfect at the side of Garrus Vakarian – though I actually don’t know what the costume will be.

The only thing missing is the ability for this thing to actually fire rounds. There’s nothing quite like a weapon with the accuracy of a sniper rifle that can fire bursts of multiple bullets in a fraction of a second, and I wish it was standard issue in every FPS.

He built the prop rifle from MDF and PVC tube and used styrene to cover up the rough edges and seams so he wouldn’t have to use Bondo.

Check out Zander’s full work log and more photos of this outstanding build over at the ZPROPS blog. Part one is here, and the finished weapon can be found here.

This is kind of funny because I never thought that any company would sponsor The Dark Side, but here you have it, the adidas Stormtrooper, ready to die for Darth Vader, while promoting the popular athletic-wear brand. Actually, I like the red color of the Stormtrooper costume. It almost makes me want to have one too, minus the adidas logo. At least he looks like he’ll be comfy while he runs in this armored tracksuit.

This adidas Stormtrooper was one of many costumes shown off at Dragon*Con, during the conference’s yearly cosplay parade that took place in Atlanta, GA, last weekend. The parade started in 1987, and this year, there were over 40,000 attendees. Apparently, there were just a few Star Wars-themed costumes on hand.

It usually takes place every year on Labor Day weekend. Next year, it will happen on August 31 to September 3rd. If you love costumes and cosplay, then you just might want to check it out.

Yep, it’s September, and if you can believe it, Halloween is just around the corner. If you’re looking for a cool costume, and don’t have a lot of time (or the talent) to put one together for yourself, you should definitely check this out.

Even if your name isn’t Wikus Van De Merwe, you could be showing up to your office Halloween party with this…

This awesome cosplay Prawn Assault Rifle was made by London’s Perkymunkle Designs, and looks just like the one from the movie (other than the ample supply of duct tape). And now, you can own it, since he’s put it up for sale.

The gun doesn’t just look awesome – it actually fires foam darts, thanks to its humble beginnings as a NERF blaster. It also has LEDs which light up when you pull the trigger – a touch that Munkle fully admits he stole from a different District 9 weapon. Of course, the weapon won’t fire unless you have some Prawn DNA in you, so you’ll want to make sure you get infected with some before you start playing with it.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

So what are you waiting for? There’s only one of these for sale, and priced at $250 (USD), I think it’s a steal – given all the labor that must have gone into building it (especially when WETA’s non-functional replica sells for 500 bucks). The auction even includes a matching Prawn hand, although it’ll only fit a “small to medium” sized hand. The only thing not included are the MNU vest and name badge, but you could throw those together without much effort. Shipping is also a bit pricey (at $48 in the UK, $70 worldwide), but this thing is a beast, and needs proper packaging to get it to you safe and sound.

Head on over to Etsy now and grab it now before someone else does.

Shhhcouture’s latex rubber Mario costume isn’t really for the kids though, and more the stuff that someone with a really kinky videogame fetish would want his or her girlfriend to wear.

If you’re that guy or gal, you can buy the Super Mario latex rubber costume from shhhcouture over on Etsy for $465 (USD). Glittery mario hat sold separately.

Halloween will be here before you know it, and Doctor Who fans are no doubt looking for something special to wear. Not that they need to use Halloween as an excuse of course. With just a bit of effort, maybe you can make your own version of this awesome Weeping Angel costume.

Of course, there’s no way that you can put yourself in a “Quantum-locked” state, so that you don’t exist in time and space and therefore can’t move when you are being observed, but at least you can look the part. Well, you could do your best to freeze when others look at you, I suppose.

This amazing costume comes from one of the users over at crafty_tardis and was actually made back in 2008. It would be awesome to wear this costume this year however, since the Weeping Angels will be coming back this season.

It takes a lot of work, but all of the steps seem fairly easy. You can check out all of the finer details over at crafty_tardis if you want to try your hand at it. But if I do see a Weeping Angel on Halloween night, I’m not taking any chances. I won’t blink, look away or run. I will be pounding dangerous statues that night with heavy objects. You have been warned.
