Fans of the Xbox 360 sandbox shooter Crackdown have reason to rejoice. Just when you thought you finally wrapped up the game, Microsoft has announced a couple of new enhancements that will drop on Xbox Live Marketplace today.

First off, there’s a bunch of improvements to the core game, like being able to reset the gangs and making it easier to find those damned agility orbs and purple stunt rings. Also, mines and charges will now be persistent throughout the world. But the real beauty comes in the form of two downloadable expansion packs, one that’s free, and the other one costing 800 gamer points.

The (free) “Free-for-All” pack will include a new mode called “Keys to the City,” which is sorta like the wonderful Garry’s Mod for Half Life 2. The mode will let you spawn objects, vehicles and ramps whenever and wherever you want. In addition, you’ll be able to set your skills to any level you want, including some new super agility and strength modes. Suffice it to say, Achievements are disabled in this mode.

The 800-point ($10) “Gettin’ Busy” pack includes three new vehicles: the agile Agency Patrol Buggy, the super-fast Agency Pursuit Vehicle, and the rocket-firing Agency Armored Vehicle. The premium pack also includes five new game modes, including street racing, rocket tag and foot races. A bunch of new weapons and equipment are also included in the pack, my favorite being the HRX Harpoon gun and the VS1 Cloaking Device. The expansion packs also offer about 350 additional achievement points between ‘em.

I think I know what I’ll be doing for the next few nights.

[UPDATE: Major Nelson has posted some great video clips of the Crackdown updates in action: New Equipment, Street Racing, New Game Types, Keys to the City Mode ]

You’ll need to have mastered your driving skills with a four-star rating before it’ll work, so get racing! The stuff you can do in this game is clearly the #1 argument against realistic physics in games.

Crackdown is a 3-D action/driving game, from the original creator of the Grand Theft Auto series, Dave Jones. The game features “M”-rated action in urban sandbox environment like the GTA titles, but integrates more advanced futuristic weapon types, superhero-like powers and the ability to use almost any item in the environment as a weapon. In addition, it’s supposed to offer a strong co-op play mode so you can share your mayhem making with your friends. The full version of the Xbox 360 exclusive is slated to be released on February 20th.
