To get more publicity for its upcoming MMORPG Age of Wulin, developer Snail Games held an online auction of one off in-game items. And more publicity they got, thanks to one die-hard and deep-pocketed fan, who paid $16,000 (USD) for a sword. Bits of data that he can’t even download yet and won’t last forever. Oh wait, he did get a plaque, so I guess that makes it all worth it.

The madness didn’t stop there: other items auctioned off by Snail Games “included a sheath for Hook of Departure which was sold for $1,600 whilst a a Lordly Spear Sheath fetched $2,500. Other relatively modest purchases were made with pre-paid time cards amounting to just $15 whilst enhancement materials went for a mere $30.Meanwhile, rare mount that characters can take advantage of in the game cost an estimated $70 during the sale.” Suddenly that Diablo 3 Auction House makes a lot more sense.

…

Seriously though, how did we get to this? Are we that bored and sheltered that our priorities are now so skewed and misplaced? Or does that sword deal one-hit kills while leaving a trail of unicorn-riding strips of bacon in its wake?

Just what we need – a new way for people to injure themselves while speeding down the street. These motorized skates strap directly onto your ordinary shoes and turn them into spnKIX. These skates are controlled via a wireless remote, and will allow users to roll around at around 10 mph. I’m sure someone will hack them to go even faster.

spnKIX were designed by Peter Treadway from JPWorks. The skates have motorized wheels on each side, with a battery pack situated on the back of each unit. A battery charge is supposed to last two or three miles, and the batteries can be removed so users can swap them. It takes 2 hours to charge them up.

A nylon frame secures them to each of your shoes, and they even come with some training wheels to help you with your balance when first trying them out. You control spnKIX using a hand-worn remote control throttle, which lets you easily vary their speed.

For now, spnKIX are trying to get funded through Kickstarter, and has a goal of raising $25,000 for them to go into production. They expect to roll them out in March 2012, and a pledge of $375 (USD) gets you a pair. Retail price will be $649, so that’s a significant discount.

There are plenty of ways to get rid of data on a CD. If you have a rewritable disc, for instance, you can just delete the files off of it and empty the trash can on your computer. Or if it’s permanently burned, you can just get a disc shredder. But if your a tech geek, you need to do something much, much cooler.

Yep, you really need to kill your old CDs by hitting them with crazy amounts of high-voltage electricity, like Youtuber Photonicinduction did in this action- (and power-) packed video clip:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

And if you’re really feeling adventurous, why not erase two discs at a time?

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Now that’s how to erase your CDs with style. I only wish that AOL still sent out those dial-up discs in the mail. I’d finally have something to do with them.

I admit that the first few seasons of 24, I was really into the show. I watched every episode and really liked it. Once season three rolled around, I lost interest and hardly watched any other episodes of the series. Now, three geeks have set a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous TV watching marathon, all thanks to Kiefer.

The geeks were watching the 24 complete series boxed set in a contest that was promoted by 20th Century Fox in part to promote the launch of the new box set. The three geeks beat out 100 other people and watched the show continuously for 86 hours, 6 minutes, and 41 seconds without going to sleep.

Each of the three guys is sharing the record in the book and received $10,000 each. All other participants got a boxed set of the 24 series. The box set has a whopping 56 discs and covers all eight seasons of the show. The contestants were allowed a 10-minute break every two hours of viewing to exit the theater, take a leak, and talk to family.

I’ve seen some crazy ass PC casemods over the years, but this one is definitely one of the nuttier ones I’ve seen in a while. What we have here is a PC with a case made of concrete.

Modder D. Heiße (who was last sighted with a PC in a tree trunk) decided to make the Concretronic for a recent modding contest.

Yes, the case for the PC is made from a single, seamless layer of concrete, wrapped around a curvy metal structure made from welding rods and steel sheets, with embedded plexiglas windows so you can see inside. The substructure of the Concretronic was made from hand-cut aluminum sheets, powder-coated white.

He even managed to come up with cast-concrete power and hard-drive indicators on the front of the case. I also really love the custom HDD and SDD covers on the drives. What a nice design touch.

The whole thing is really a masterwork of casemodding, and if you’re at all interested in how it was built, head on over to The Best Case Scenario for the full build log.

I’m not sure if slouching back in a chair playing Modern Warfare 2 in front of a television or computer screen is the sort of activity that requires camouflage, but who am I to argue with the video game peripheral gurus at Mad Catz, who have taken it upon themselves to develop a full line of military chic Modern Warfare 2 accessories.

I’m not kidding when I say “full line” — Mad Catz is sparing no expense to capitalize on Modern Warfare 2′s inevitable success. Their peripherals lineup includes:

Gamepads for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360

A “sniper mouse” for PC FPS traditionalists

2 keyboards for PC, one “elite” and one standard

Faceplate and “Console Skinz” for Xbox 360

Controller faceplates for Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers

“Throat Communicator” for Xbox 360

I’m excited for Modern Warfare 2 as much as the next guy/gal (the first Modern Warfare sent First Person Shooter shivers up my spine like only Half-Life 2 has been able to) but I don’t think I’m ready to explain to my friends, family, and colleagues why I have a microphone choker for playing this game. I’ll just stick with the wireless headset, thank you.

Lomography’s new Diana Multi-Pinhole Operator allows users to use up to 3 pinholes in one shot. The pinholes create a ripple, cross-eyed effect that only worsens becomes crazier once you add the color filters to the mix. The Diana Multi-Pinhole Operator has a focal length of 29 mm, a pinhole diameter of 0.277 mm and an f/128 F stop. View angle is 103 degrees, but thanks to the pinholes you can take a panoramic shot. A sort of panoramic shot. The weird, dizzying kind.

The camera uses 120 film, but if you want to use the cheaper 35 mm film you can get the 35mm Back+ attachment. Here’s a sample shot that used 3 pinholes but no color filters:

Isn’t that what characters in movies see when they’re high, poisoned, or suffering from heatstroke? But that’s a wall of white compared to this one:

Now we’re going through the rabbit hole. By the way, the Diana Multi-Pinhole Operator is as analog as it gets, as it doesn’t even have a shutter or a lens. It has a switch under the front barrel for selecting how many pinholes you want to use, then you a lever that you lower to let light in, then raise to stop light from coming in. It couldn’t be harder. I meant simpler.

How’s that for a panorama. You can get the Diana Multi-Pinhole Operator for only $65 USD at Lomography. Barf bag not included.

I had enough problems trying to solve the original Rubik’s Cube. Heck, I was often tempted to just peel all the colored stickers off and place them on the proper sides of the cube whenever I got frustrated with the damned thing. So when I came across V-CUBES, I just about lost my mind.

V-CUBE cubic puzzles come in 5x5x5, 6x6x6 and an insane 7x7x7 configuration for the true puzzle masochist.

The mammoth 7x7x7 cube is made up of hundreds of individual pieces which rotate around an inner mechanism that was precisely engineered to turn quickly and smoothly (hence the slightly bulging appearance of the cube). If I’m doing my math right, the V-CUBE 7 offers up about 1.95 * (10^160) permutations, so that should keep you busy for just a little while.

Think that seems unsolveable? Check out this video clip of master puzzle solver Frank Morris cranking through the V-CUBE 7 in just under 7 minutes flat:

And just in case that’s not complicated enough for you, the V-CUBE guys are working on future models all the way up to 11x11x11. O.M.G.W.T.F.R.U.B.I.K?

You can find all of these cubes over at the V-CUBES Online Shop. Prices range from about $35 to $70 USD.
