South Korea is set to test some new robot prison guards in their jails by as early as next year. The idea is to free up some of the human guards for other duties. The question is, how long will these robo-guards last before they get shived in the circuits or turned into license plates by the inmates.

The ‘bot as conceptualized in the above image won’t toy with a nightstick as it patrols the corridors at night, but it will function as surveillance, sending video back to a central base. It will be on the lookout for the usual trouble: suicide attempts, fights, etc.

Using a speaker and microphone, those in charge can talk to prisoners through the robots and they can have a conversation. Each ‘bot will stand about 5 feet tall and will weigh between 70 to 80 kilograms. It’s a cheerful looking guard bot. Too cheerful for prison. I think they will be trashed very quickly.

It happened in France, where someone robbed a truck full of video games. It was Saturday morning in Créteil, in the south of Paris, when two masked men pulled off the heist. They hit the truck with a car first and then actually used tear gas to neutralize the drivers and make off with the truck, as if it were a scene from a bad movie.

The shipment was apparently worth appx. $550,363(USD). The truck held approximately 6,000 copies of the game, which have likely made their way onto the black market by now.

How many times have you heard of stories that involved thieves or rapists involving people you know or victims who live around your neighborhood and thought: Hey, that could’ve been me if I had gone home ten minutes later.

Scary thought, I know, which is why I think the City Scars app is a very good idea, even though that’s all it is right now: an idea.

The app has a pretty scary (and strange name) but in a way, it does make sense. It tracks down the scars of the city you’re in (scars being crimes, broken street lights, among others) from user-submitted information and pushes alerts and notifications to other users of the app.

Through the app, concerned users can also share “digital witness” information to the authorities about stuff that they just happened to capture and, well, witness.

I remember watching an episode of CSI a few years back and worrying about how the show could be teaching criminals and would-be masterminds how to cover up their tracks properly after committing a crime. What I didn’t consider though, was how victims could also use tips and tactics from CSI to catch their assailants as well.

That’s exactly what an 18-year-old girl did when she found herself in the backseat of a scumbag of a soldier who had raped at least three other girls and attempted to kidnap two others.

Convicted rapist Lance Corporal Jonathan Haynes would drive around the streets as he looked for his potential victim, dragged her to his car, drove to an abandoned barracks, and proceeded to rape the woman. He would then order the victim to wipe herself clean with towels or wet wipes to destroy forensic evidence.

One victim, however, remembered some tactics that the characters from CSI used to put assailants behind bars. So when Haynes wasn’t looking, she spat on the seats, pulled out some of her hair, and stashed it into the car seats to leave behind ample DNA evidence. She also made a mental sketch of the area where she was taken so she could help identify the location later on to the authorities.

As a result of these pieces of evidence, Haynes was convicted and given an indeterminate sentence with a minimum of 11 years.

This is a very bizarre story. Apparently, a man named Timothy Jones Sr. from Lincoln, Mo was walking in traffic. I would hazard a guess that he was on something that affected his cognitive abilities at the time. Not only do normal folk generally not walk in traffic, they also tend to store their PS2 at home – not in their pants.

The police asked the man to come out of the road he pulled up his shirt to reveal the console. The man then tossed the PS2 at the officers and ran for it. One of the officers was hit with the console and had a minor hand injury from it.

The police chased the guy and when he was cornered, Jones picked up a potted plant and a gutter spout to use as weapons and tossed two metal chairs and when he went to pick up a third chair the police had enough. The police tased the man and used pepper spray. I wonder what order that happened in, pepper spray and then tase, or tase and then pepper spray while the guy was twitching.

Perhaps the guy was just really high and thought he was playing Grand Theft Auto, and the graphics were just really freaking awesome.

I can just hear the gears in sex offender Robert Nicholas McGuire’s perverted mind turning. I bet this guy thought that if he used the computers in the Apple Store in downtown San Luis Obispo that authorities would never know he was violating his parole. Apparently, the convicted sex offender had on the terms of his parole the little caveat that he could not access the Internet.

McGuire was spotted by detectives on the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement team and one of the detectives recognized McGuire. The detective followed McGuire into the Apple Store and watched as the man logged onto Facebook using the store demo computer. The detective then used a computer beside McGuire to log onto the Megan’s Law website.

On that site, the officer found details that clearly indicated accessing Facebook was a violation of McGuire’s parole. The officers waited for McGuire to leave the store and then arrested him outside. McGuire is now in the county jail without bail waiting for the next step, which sounds like prison.

Stealing is bad. Personally, I think all thieves should have their gonads stomped into a little pile of goo. Cameron Pittman should be the first recipient of said punishment to remove his DNA from the gene pool. Pittman made the brilliant decision to walk into a store in Florida with a PlayStation controller of some sort stashed in his pocket, and attempted to rob the place with it.

We can assume it was some sort of Move accessory or a Bluetooth remote control since it was vaguely gun shaped. The guy hid the controller in a pocket and tried to rob the store using it. I can just see him with the thing shoved in his pocket trying to fool the clerk.

Things went bad for the thief when a cop walked in on the robbery and arrested him. Pittman is now facing charges on strong-arm robbery and violation of probation. I for one hope that is his third strike. Pittman gave up without incident.

A group of Michigan State University researchers led by Computer Science and Engineering professor Anil Jain and doctoral student Brendan Klare are working on a program that can match mug shots of known criminals to police sketches. Since sketches are not always reliable, instead of striving to match images pixel-by-pixel, the team is developing an algorithm that looks at “high-level features”, such as “structural distribution and the shape of the eyes, nose and chin.”

I’m not sure if the example above is one of the software’s correct findings. In any case, Prof. Jain and his team still have a lot of tweaking to do. Currently they claim that out of a database of 10,000 mug shots, their software was able to make the correct match 45% of the time. They say that this is a significant improvement over current commercial facial recognition systems. I wish the whole MSU team luck, and I hope they manage to finish their software. If I had their software I’d probably spend my time searching for people that look like cartoon characters.
