If you’re going for a high score in Space Invaders, it’s important to know which aliens are worth the most points, right? Well, here’s a handy way to keep those point values top of mind all the time.

While I usually think of grannies, lace doilies, and Lladro figurines when I think of cross-stitch art hanging on the wall, even I’d be proud to hang this Space Invaders cross-stitch on my wall. While it doesn’t show the entire playing field, it does give you the important legend listing the scores for all four invader types, but still shines no light on how much you can expect for shooting down their green spaceship.

You know, that spaceship makes me ponder something I never thought of before now: How the hell do invaders fit inside that thing? Maybe they’ve got some sort of shrinker ray? Or are they just really flexible? All I can think of now is is some sort of alien clown car routine now.

But I digress. The Space Invaders sampler measures about 7.8″ (h) x 6″ (w), and was handmade by Knitforvictory, and is available over on Etsy for $25 (USD).

We’ve featured a ton of cases just for the iPhone 4. Some of them provide extra protection, some of them add functionality or power, while some are just plain fancy. But I think it’s safe to say that many iPhone owners buy a case for its looks or design, or at least to personalize their gadget. If you’re one of those people, you should check out the Neostitch case.

Made by Connect Design, Neostitch cases have patterned weaves in them, just like the aida cloths that are traditionally used in cross-stitching. In fact, that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do with the case – cross-stitch on it. It even comes with a needle and three threads so you can get started right away. There are even sample patterns on its product page so you can start stitching even if you don’t have an idea for a design yet.

That’s a low price for what is practically an infinite number of designs. There are only two things that will determine how long you’ll keep using the case – your creativity and the compatibility of the case with the next iPhone model.

When you first look at this thing from a distance, it doesn’t look like much, but when you realize that it took her over 80,000 cross-stitches to bring this 12″ x 28″ piece to fruition.

A dozen of the original fighters from the classic NES boxer are beautifully detailed with thousands of tiny stitches in place of pixels. It really is a gamer-geek craft masterpiece.

All my faves are there, including Soda Popinski, Mr. Sandman, King Hippo, and of course, Mike Tyson himself.

Craftster should have a series of works with this theme – the “Game Over” moments from video games. And then they should be turned into T-shirts. Then the proceeds from each design should be sent to me, because I came up with the idea. Ball’s in your court, Craftster.

It is widely believed (by the writer of the Wikipedia article on cross-stitch) that cross-stitch was traditionally used merely to embellish household cloths like tablecloths or dishcloths. Cloths cloths cloths. What a weird word. Anyway the structure of the aida cloth used in cross-stitching made it easy to form floral and geometric patterns, but eventually people began making all sorts of images using the style, and not just for adding a bit of life to ordinary linen but also to make decorations meant to be displayed and appreciated on its own. Fast-forward several hundred years, and marvel at how far (out) cross-stitch has come:

It’s attractive, simple to match with other bathroom gear in bright colors, and anyone who isn’t a fan gets to wipe their hands on the Pokémon. Everyone wins.

Unfortunately, gamerghoul13 only had one available towel for Pokémon-stitching, but this one turned out so well (check out the detail) that he should track down a whole set! Throw down some nice red rugs, maybe dye a toilet set cover to look like a Pokéball… okay, maybe that would be too much.

Cross stitcher tracethekat made this entire set as a gift for Christmas, and in doing so, effectively rendered 95% of the world’s Christmas gifts less cool… but at least we know one person got lucky with the gifts!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s science to do… and by “science,” I mean “making my own versions of these.” Black-on-white, though. I’m a purist!

Technabob fave artist lostmitten has recently broken into the art of needlepoint, hand-stitching pixel-perfect scenes from classic video games like this one from everyone’s favorite dot-gobbler, Pac-Man.

As an added bonus, you can actually lay your grubby little mitts on this for your own room. Of course, that is if you run willy-nilly over to Lostmitten’s Etsy shop and plunk down your $20 bucks before it’s gone.

Do you remember the classic video game Arkanoid? Some people do, and rather fondly, as evidenced by this elaborate cross stitched homage to it.

I’m not sure what’s up with the Philip K. Dick quote on there but I’m sure there’s a good reason for it. Artist Eunice Szpillman was asked to do the artwork for the Spanish video game mag SuperJuegos Xtreme. She documented the process with her iPhone camera.

Me, I always found Arkanoid a little boring. I mean, it’s essentially Pong with a couple more colors and an annoying high-pitched song. If you’re feeling pangs of rose-colored nostalgia about it, play a round or two and I bet you’ll agree with me.

The last thing you ever want to see on your good old iPod is the sad iPod icon. This usually tells of some sort of nasty failure of your iPod’s software or hardware, and is often a sign that you’ll soon be heading out to the Apple Store to pick up a brand new iPhone or iPod Touch. So I find it amusing that anyone would want to immortalize their sad iPod as a piece of art.

But that’s exactly what craftster contributor benjibot decided to do with this wacky sad iPod cross-stitch. Apparently, benjibot’s 4G iPod finally kicked the bucket a few days back, and served as inspiration for his design.

I guess you could think of the cloth like a mini-memorial to the deceased media player, to be laid over a tiny cardboard casket before it’s lowered into its final resting place in the dumpster.

Someone (who I’ll dub Crafty McCrafterson) created this charming Grand Theft Auto IV cross-stitch which uses embroidery thread to express that age old chestnut “Only those who die get closure. The living do not.” Awwww. So sweet!

I don’t know about you, but when I think “Grand Theft Auto IV” I think “granny crafts.” Oh wait, actually I think about hotwiring stolen cars and hijacking helicopters while majorly pwning everyone in Liberty City. My point is that GTA IV + cross-stitching is, like, the ultimate in cognitive dissonance, no?

Want to make your own? C. McC. has thoughtfully shared a legend so you can do just that.

Here’s a fun fact I just made up: 9 out of 10 stitching grannies agree that GTA IV is awesome.
