Yeah, see, while this isn’t quite as elaborate as some of EvilDan’s mods, it’s still pretty incredible, with that peekaboo case and the silhouette. The other side looks good, too. Love that metallic paint!

Anytime you’ve got textured bulletholes, you know you’re looking at a killer mod. I’m sure the friend–because EvilDan is a capital fellow who mods for his pals–is pleased as can be. I know I would be!

It may just be me, or the black DSi shining through, but it really looks like Mario is slamming his head into Luigi’s eye, and that’s just taking things kind of far, don’t you think? Whatever started this, it must be serious business, because both brothers are wearing murder-faces. They really look sort of monstrous. Perhaps this custom DSi is a statement about the beast within, and how we can release that negative energy through the power of video games.

Flickr user 4apples posted pictures of this controller project, stating that he completed this (sans the LEDs that he’ll add later) as a gift for his girlfriend, who wanted a “special” controller. Congratulations, unnamed girl. Your man is thoughtful and talented.

But as impressive as the finished project is, I really like this picture of the painted pieces. So many of the custom paint jobs I’ve seen end up looking a little sloppy, or the paint just isn’t quite right. Here, you can really see how nice each individually painted piece looks.

I’ve seen mods for sale that don’t look this nice. Just sayin’.

I can’t say it doesn’t make sense, because if I were to build a steampunk robot, he might end up looking a bit like C-3P0. However, I can’t quite shake the feeling that this R2 isn’t steampunk. Really, he was just buried for a while in the sands of Tatooine and just needs a good scrubbing. Then again, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. That dust had to come from somewhere.

The toy isn’t too expensive at $45 (USD), but it’s..well it looks like a toy, not a badass truck robot with ninja moves and a deep deep voice. Fortunately, you don’t have to settle for the vanilla Prime. Professional customizer Crefigz (short for creative figz) modified the hell out of the Hasbro version to make it look more like the movie version of Optimus Prime and posted it at Figure.fm. Unfortunately I had to convert the pics to a lower resolution to fit here, but even still you’d have to be blind to not be able to see the detail and the bling on Crefigz’ work. To emphasize how much work he did – and the quality of his customization – let’s look at the vanilla Prime:

No match. Crefigz’ Prime can beat vanilla Prime just by showing up on the battlefield. As you can see the toy was completely repainted and chromed-out, so that the finished product actually looks like a miniature Optimus Prime, made of metal and red flames and awesome. Let’s compare the vehicle modes:

Again, it’s not so bad. It’s a toy truck. Here’s Crefigz Prime in vehicle mode:

Are your minds re-blown? I still can’t believe the transformation. Heheh. Transformation. Good one.

Aside from the chrome and the awesome paint job – by the way the flames are not decals, they’re painted on as well – Crefigz also did the following: “Added ball joint in neck in order to get more articulation,  modded hand from TFTM 07 Leader Class Optimus Prime, modded blaster from TFTM 07 Leader Class Optimus Prime and added custom side mirror to get a more accurate detail level.”

Here are a couple of close-ups on Crefigz Prime’s weapons and chest, just to show you the amount of work that went in to this mod.

I really love how the toy looks like it’s made of metal. Crefigz is selling this mod on eBay; bid starts at $710. Yeah it’s a ridiculous price for a toy, but it’s a ridiculously well-done mod as well. In fact, there are already 16 bidders for Crefigz Prime as of this writing. This spiffy custom model puts the official Halo Xbox 360 to shame. Not only does it glow (always a plus), but that’s one of the armor emblems from the game. I can’t tell from his signature on the Ben Heck forums, where the mod was posted, but it’s probably his emblem. Because, uh, it would be a little strange if it wasn’t.

It might not look it, but apparently this is still a work in process. I can only guess it will transform into a full-sized automobile (a Warthog?) in its final version, if this is only the in-process result.

Bright colors, blocky environments, and hordes of raging infected running around among the zombie-like goombas. This custom set of Left 4 Dead maps is based on the familiar scenes from the pantheon of Mario-associated games (and levels), but unfortunately, the only screenshot that shows a lot of zombies is the one above. I want to see zombies boiling out of a castle.

Recently, Valve has been talking about bringing user-generated content for Left 4 Dead to the Xbox 360, but of course, anything that steps on copyright won’t be allowed, so no Mushroom Massacre for those of us who are restricted to the console. Ah, tragedy.

The blue-tinted case, shown above, was the first, made from a found box of vintage French comics. The black-and-white case? That was the second project by Craftster member julibooli, who found the first project so easy that she immediately followed it up by repeating the process for a friend. I wish more of my friends would make me gadget cases from nifty artwork. Or that they could use scissors.

Add a few artful paint spatters for that oh-my-god-there’s-blood-everywhere affect (hey, it’s a violent game) and this has got to be the perfect controller for Gears of War. Just hope the paint can stand up to the sweaty-handed concentration that comes with, say, Horde mode.

You’d hardly guess it from the finished product, but this was velocitti’s first controller mod! If it was me, I might stop there. The problem with coming out strong is that sometimes the sophomore effort just can’t rise above, and this one sets quite the standard.

How does $3500 sound for the price of a swanky 360? Sure, it’s a little high (and will probably go higher), but just look! If you feel like dropping thousands of bones on Ebay, you might be able to nab the above Xbox! If, however, you don’t have several hundred dollars to blow on a console, you can take your chances in the drawing for the other rare ‘box. All you have to do is download “All You Need is Love” for the Beatles Rock Band game and you’ll be entered!

Or you can wait until after the drawing’s over, and check to see if the drawing-console turns up on Ebay. It probably will.

All of the proceeds from the promotion are being donated to Doctors Without Borders, so at least it’s all for a good cause.

Okay, so this is a completely different shade of gold, with copper thrown in, but it’s more about the connotation of gold and Zelda. Work with me here.

Nice, subtle contrast of colors… but doesn’t it seem like something’s missing? Doesn’t the console seem naked? There’s no logo! The buttons are as bare as can be, too! To me, that almost changes the look more than the color does. I’m lost without those splashes of red.

But I do like the console, particularly for the aforementioned connotation, and perhaps best of all, this is almost a stealth console. You could hide it right in your living room, drop a vase on top of it, and no one would notice a thing… until you started throwing down on some octoroks, that is.

The Flickr set includes some in-process shots and the whole project looks pretty simple. Cut an iPhone-shaped slot in your favorite object and make a hole for cabling. Voila! Now your favorite random object can be used to charge one of your favorite useful objects. It’s a win all around.

deviantARTist Dopelgunder calls the work on this mod “lazy” at times, but unless you’re looking at the large detail shots, it’s hard to see anything that doesn’t look amazing. I think that means it would work just fine sitting on a shelf. I’d be more than willing to try it on my shelf.

We see loads of Xbox 360 mods, and Nintendo DS mods, too. I’d like to see more custom PS3s and PSPs, though I’m not sure how well steampunk, for instance, would work with either. I’m more than willing to look at ‘em, though, so someone should get to work on that.

This custom ‘box is the work of one friend for another. How’s that for teamwork? Better than crouching together on a counter in a bathroom while zombies descend upon you and your pals, that’s for sure.

Nice glow, but I wonder if it’s distracting during game time?

To FatalJapan’s friend, I say this: if you want to make one of these for me, free of charge (as this one was!), then I promise to do nothing but praise you afterward… and I praise with cookies.

There is nothing about this picture that doesn’t disturb me on some level. Look at the wooden fence in the background! You don’t see fences like that in places of happiness and fun. Someone always ends up impaled when there’s a fence like that around, and if the fence doesn’t do it, Pyramid Head will.

Sorry, distracted by memories of Silent Hill 2. Anyway, these Silent Hill ponies are available on eBay. $30 apiece (or more, by the time of auction’s end) seems like a lot, but the detail work is pretty good, and these are a lot more elaborate than many custom ponies I’ve seen. And a lot creepier.

Photo’s a little blurry, but the color is just incredible. Part of me really wants to paint my 360. The rest of me realizes it will probably break (again) and need to be replaced (again).

These all look so good that I can’t even decide which one I like best–and if these aren’t enough, there are more at designer Frank Buchwald’s site. If even that doesn’t sate your desires (what are you looking for, clockwork lighting?!), you can request custom designed lamps, though the price will probably be a blank check and perhaps a kidney.

Each piece takes several weeks to create, and prices aren’t listed. I expect they are filled with numbers. Big ones.

Look! It’s the Winchester. Such a comforting and familiar site.The film fits surprisingly well into Left 4 Dead’s five-part campaign; players start off in Shaun’s apartment, move to his Mum’s house, then to Liz’s, and then to two stages in the Winchester.

The campaign is still in progress and it looks like they’re in the market for people who can work on it.
