I’m a big fan of shooters when it comes to video games, and when you combine some science fiction and horror themes you really have my attention. This is why when Dead Space originally came out, I rushed down and purchased the game to try my hand at playing it. I’ll admit I never got used to the strange third person controls, I wished for some first-person action. Still, the game was popular and if you enjoyed playing it, EA has confirmed a new game is coming to the franchise.

EA stated this week that an official announcement is expected at E3 with the launch in EA’s current fiscal year, which ends in March 2013. EA also hinted that other new video games are coming including a new Medal of Honor and a new Need for Speed game. For now, EA isn’t offering any details on the coming video games.

Some reports are claiming that Dead Space 3 won’t be set on a spaceship and will instead be on an icy planet called Tau Volantis. Issac, the main character, is also rumored to have a split personality in this version of the game and gets taunted by himself. The split personality is supposed to be visible as a separate onscreen character.

This is more of a sci-fi cosplay costume than a Halloween costume, but if you’d wear this over the weekend, it would probably amaze anyone you’d come across. This awesome costume was made by Maker extraordinaire Shawn Thorsson, best known for those incredible HALO costumes (his Predator wasn’t half bad either).

It’s based on Isaac Clarke’s Engineering RIG Suit from Dead Space 2. He had initially only made the helmet, but he mentions that it was freaking people out, so he decided to complete a whole custom costume to go with the headgear. It’s kind of amazing how he was able to complete it, and he didn’t go by half measures.

Check out Shawn’s blog post where he details the construction of the costume and there are even more pics in his Flickr set.

I have played the PC version of the shooter Dead Space 2 and really like it. It was one of those games that had moments when I jumped when things happened fast just like a scary movie. If you purchased the Collector’s Edition of that game you landed a full size toy replica of the Plasma Cutter from the game.

Modder Kipkay has taken that Plasma Cutter and hacked it to have real lasers inside to look like the one from the game. The video at the bottom of the story here even shows you how the thing was made. This is some awesome DIY action, and I bet a lot of people that have one of these have wished it was real.

The lasers he used are blue and purple in color and are strong enough to even light matches and pop balloons. They appear to similar to those found in those Spyder III laser pointers from Wicked Lasers. If you build one of these, be sure and let us know.

Fans of the Dead Space series will be familiar with the Plasma Cutter, since it’s the default tool-turned-weapon that the hero Isaac Clarke has in both games. Now you can own life sized replicas of the Plasma Cutters in Dead Space and Dead Space 2, which will surely come in handy if you encounter life sized replicas of Necromorphs.

Pictured above is the 211-V Timson Tools Plasma Cutter from the first game, while the one below is the custom Plasma Cutter that Isaac Clarke himself built and is the one he uses in the sequel. Both weapons measure 17″ x 11″ x 3″ and come in a display case. Both also have built-in 3.7-volt rechargeable batteries that power the “3 blast spot”, the sight lines that the in-game weapons have. In addition, the Dead Space 2 Plasma Cutter also has a flashlight.

One feature that the Dead Space 2 Plasma Cutter has that the earlier version doesn’t is that its front half can be rotated 90 degrees, mimicking the horizontal mode available in the video game.

You can pre-order both replicas at discounted prices from Epic Weapons. The Dead Space Plasma Cutter sells for $150 (USD) while the Dead Space 2 Plasma Cutter sells for $160. If you’re an Entertainment Earth loyalist, you can also get both replicas from said retailer – check ‘em out here and here – but they’re a lot more expensive there, selling for $220 and $240 respectively.

The very name is terrifying, and the game’s Necromorphs are among some of gaming’s most disturbing creatures. Basically, it’s the worst candidate for amigurumi ever… and yet, look! That little Necromorph is adorable!

Just look at those little yarn tentacle-grippy-crawly things pouring out of his mouth. Okay, actually, he’s still pretty creepy, but now in an adorable and harmless way. As long as he remains still, that is. And isn’t in the room when I have the lights off. But enough about my future nightmares: how’s he look next to the original?

So we’ve seen Left 4 Dead crochet, and now Dead Space. I’m just waiting for the amigurumi Resident Evil tableau.

Real fans don’t buy action figures, whether or not they’re commercially available. Buying things is for wimps. No, the real fan breaks out the paint, dismembers currently-existing figures, and then the real fan makes their own action figures, like Chris Hooton did for the horror game Dead Space.

Dead Space borrows heavily from other material–most notably, science fiction classic Solaris–so it’s only fitting that Hooton’s custom figure borrowed heavily from another figure. That is, he recycled it from a Cyclops figure (from the Marvel Legends line).

You’ve got to love this little project for the attention to bloody-torsoed detail, if nothing else. Nothing says awesome quite like accuracy.
