Instructables contributor Jetpack5 has put together a tutorial showing how you can make these fun desk toys using old 3.5-inch floppies, and a couple of everyday tools like needlenose pliers, a hammer and a nail. Oh, and the Death Star requires a bunch of rubber bands too. Both the Falcon and the Death Star are made identifiable by the round metal floppy spindle, while the X-Wing is comprised mostly of those metal shutters which used to protect the delicate floppy disk innards.

I think these little models manage to capture the spirit of the originals, despite their relatively primitive shapes. If you’d like to make some for yourself, use the Force and head over to Instructables for the full instructions.

What you’re looking at above is a micro-scale scene of the Death Star hangar and Imperial Shuttle landing as envisioned by toomuchcaffee (2MC). The set is one of several that are currently being pitched for consideration over on LEGO Cuusoo, including tiny versions of Hoth, Tatooine, and other locations from the Star Wars saga.

Each set would use a minimal number of primitive bricks to convey classic scenes from the films, going well beyond the few examples shown here. Personally, I think they’re just swell, and it’s kind of fun to know you could assemble each of these tiny dioramas with ease – in stark contrast to some of the massive multi-thousand brick LEGO Star Wars sets out there today.

It didn’t take an Imperial fleet working around the clock with Vader and the Emperor nagging them either. Instead it was accomplished with just a Sharpie. It looks amazingly awesome. Great work. Good dog.

I hope they don’t get sent to Tatooine for their honeymoon and spend the entire time looking for droids. Or worse yet, get sent to Endor and get beat up by Ewoks. This cake comes from Sweet on Cakes. I especially like how the bride-trooper is in her gown.

For now, you can imagine what that might look like, courtesy of this Death Portal mashup t-shirt from designer Zerobriant. I can only imagine that between Wheatley’s massive ego and tiny brain, his eyeball is probably the weak spot of Death Star #3, and Chell could blow the whole thing up with a single blast from her trusty handheld portal device. And instead of being powered by hypermatter, this Death Star runs on potato energy.

About the only thing wrong with this great geek mashup is the price. I have a hard time paying $30 bucks for any t-shirt, even if it does combine two of my favorite pastimes. Fortunately, you can also grab it as a postcard or a print for a bit less. I’m betting that Cave Johnson is responsible for the pricing.

Someone needs to do the battle of Hoth in Minecraft now. It will probably be Graham, since he admits that “somehow Minecraft is taking over my life”. I say, if you are addicted, at least create some cool stuff with your addiction – and that’s just what Graham has done here. Great work!

Unfortunately I don’t have any details about the construction or the creators of these models. All I know is that they’re beautiful. If you’re in a hurry at least look at the Death Star pictures. I kind of like the clean and well-lit take on it. The hidden passengers of the partially constructed Star Destroyer are also neat touches.

Now this particular R2 unit seems to have flipped his lid, but that’s only so you can get at the minty goodness inside, and not because he has a bad motivator unit. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but each mint is also shaped like a little R2-D2 too. It’s too bad that there’s no matching C-3PO candy tin, because they’d look pretty good standing alongside each other on your desk. Oh well, one droid is better than no droids, I suppose.

On the other hand, they will be offering Stormtrooper, Darth Vader and Death Star mints, which freshen your breath with the full power of the Dark Side of the Force.

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of info about how the models were converted into speakers. I do know that the sound system has a total power output of 200W, and that the TIE fighters each have a Yamaha 2¾-inch mid-range and 1 inch dome tweeter with built-in crossovers, while the Death Star hides a 6½-inch driver and was custom painted by NubGraffix.

Audiophiles will be quick to point out that a 2.1 sound system won’t give you the best sound quality (especially for games or movies) and will barely be enough to distract Yoda from his meditation. Hardcore Star Wars fans could also chastise this mod because the TIE fighters are larger than the Death Star, which is supposed to house thousands of the star fighters in its belly. Both are legitimate complaints, but I’m still very impressed with this mod, especially with regards to the integration of the audio components. You’ll barely notice that they’re speakers unless you look closely. Check out Major League Mods’ Photobucket account for high-res pics.

It was part of his school’s Science Discovery Day a few months back, and while the students were busy creating their little dioramas, Jay spent $2,300 and six months to create this landing bay, prominently featured in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. That’s when Palpatine popped in to see Darth Vader’s progress on the second Death Star.

The build measured 6 by 6 feet and he only got to display it once. Jay has been a LEGO fanatic since 1973, and hasn’t had the heart to take it apart yet.

It was made by Outofthisworldpinata, the same guys who made the equally awesome TIE Fighter piñata, but not the same guys who made the Darth Vader piñata before it. What was that I was saying about Star Wars and piñatas before? Maybe it’s just the Sith and piñatas. With all the recent changes in the upcoming Blu-ray collection, I’m betting it won’t be long before we see a George Lucas piñata too.

One thing to keep in mind with the Death Star piñata is that it exhaust port is a much easier target than the one that Luke had to aim for. You won’t need The Force to find this weak spot:

It took Rachel Linhart several days to put together this cool cake. All in all, she clocked in about 24 hours of build time. Sadly though, this cake was demolished en route to the birthday party it was meant for, courtesy of New York’s finest cab drivers.

It’s sad that it was destroyed before it could be eaten, but the kids happily imagined that Luke destroyed the cake with his precise, Force-controlled shot on the way, and not potholes and bad driving.

Jennifer premiered her dress at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. She had seen a Death Star costume before, and loved the idea of cosplay, which is why she came up with this dress. The Death Star shape comes from an exaggerated bubble skirt. To go with it, she came up with the character Miss Death Star.

The main shape was made out of a papier-machéed beach ball, which was then deflated and cut in half. She cut a hole into it and inserted a salad bowl. All in all, it looks pretty great, don’t you think? Darth Vader sure would be proud.

This LEGO Death Star comes with 24 minifigs, including 6 which are exclusive to this set. This Death Star measures 16 inches tall by 16½ inches wide, and inside you’ll find many of the classic Empire rooms, from the Imperial conference chamber to the TIE Advanced hanger bay. There’s even a trash compactor, complete with Dianoga, the trash compactor monster. Bet you didn’t know that he had a name.

Despite all the pieces, this is one build that shouldn’t be too hard to put together, as you’ll have some nice photos an instructions to go along with it. The LEGO Death Star kit isn’t cheap though – it sells for $399.99 (USD) over at LEGO’s online shop and Amazon.

For some reason, though, I can’t imagine Stormtroopers using port-a-potties, or driving a Prius. But I have been known to be wrong from time to time.

Now that I’ve got you all worked up, I hate to burst your bubble. What they’re building isn’t a Death Star at all. These guys are actually building this giant steel orb as part for the new Nature Research Center at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. While the structure won’t be painted to look like the Death Star, it will eventually be finished to look like the Earth:

No Stormtroopers either, but it’s still pretty cool, eh?

While we last saw the Dark Lord himself guarding his chocolate chippers, he’s now upped his game by storing all the Empire’s bakery treats in this Death Star cookie jar. The ceramic jar measures almost 1 foot wide at it’s widest point, and should hold onto a whole batch of freshly baked Wookiee Cookiees.

You can grab one over at the Star Wars Shop now for $49.99 (USD). Just keep an eye out for X-Wing fighters trying to go for its weak point and turning your baker’s dozen into a bunch of crumbs.

This build comes courtesy of Chris McVeigh, who’s got it all figured out thanks to some files that he posted on his blog. You’ll need Lego Digital Designer to read his files and to generate the LEGO map for building one for yourself.

It’s safe to say that finding enough gray-colored bricks will be a challenge. Unless you purchase the specific bricks for this build and you use the bricks you have lying around, you’ll likely end up with a colorful Death Star, and what fun would that be?

For the sake of baking enthusiasts out there, the Death Star topping is a coconut cake with coconut buttercream, while it’s base is a red velvet cake. Both were covered in fondant. Got that? Good.

I never thought I’d ever describe pastry as intimidating, and yet that’s what this is. Look at it. It’s daring you to take a bite.
