Facebook has taken over a lot of lives, and I mean that literally, in the past few years since it’s quick rise to fame. It’s not uncommon to find people feverishly posting photos via mobile and updating their status every other minute based on every single whim and thought that enters their head.

So what do you get when you cross up-and-coming designer Lana Bălana (link slightly NSFW) and Facebook? The Facebook dress, obviously. The detail or fit isn’t something to be impressed with, but it’s the whole idea that gets to me. We’ve all heard about girls who wear their hearts on their sleeve, so now it’s time for you to meet the girl with her Facebook profile on her, well, body.

This isn’t available for sale, as it was one of the pieces in Lana’s graduation collection. She relates the dress to the evolution of women, “from the initial stage of nudity up to her upgraded virtual level of being.”

Looks to me like women’s evolution has now come to the point of dresses made from cut-up tarpaulin sewn together with some plastic material to put it all together. But hey, that’s just me.

So to the maker of these sour milk dresses, I suggest you show photos of your creations and designs first before telling the women what they’re made of, just to lessen the ick factor and just to show them that rancid milk couture could look oh-so-good and glamorous.

The woman behind these creations are Anke Domaske, a designer who’s got a background in microbiology and a good eye for fashion. Instead of using fabrics like every other designer in the world, Anke chose to work with waste milk that didn’t quite meet the standards, rendering it unfit for human consumption.

When it comes to gadgets, I want my stuff to work more than I want any specific name on it. If I am going to plunk down hundreds of dollars, I expect the features and performance to come first over a fancy designer name. I know there are some out there that think a designer name is just as important as the performance, and if you are this sort, the Pierre Cardin Android tablet might be just right for you.

The tablet sells for £275 (~$450 USD), and has mundane specs such as a 1GHz Samsung Cortex A8 processor and a 800×480, 7-inch multi-touch screen. Internal storage is just 4GB, but at least it has 512MB of RAM. That storage capacity can be upped with a microSD card to get 16GB more.

The tablet has WiFi and supports 3G, if you buy the optional dongle. It also has a 1.3MP front camera, micro USB port, and a mini HDMI port. The worst thing about the tablet is that it is running Android 2.2 Froyo, and I wouldn’t count on updates coming any time soon.

Funny thing is, about the only “designer” things about this are the case and its “uber-cool black gift box,” and those are just about as dull as you can get too.

I didn’t vote for Obama, mostly because his ears were too big and he reminded me of Ross Perot. As it turns out my irrational fear of leaders with big ears worked out in my favor, you can’t blame me for the huge deficit and the fact that our tax money paid bonuses for banking executives. Michelle Obama has thus far been known for being married to the leader of the free world and for being a snappy dresser.

Apparently, the dude responsible for at least some of her duds is designer Jason Wu. Wu has branched out from dressing Michelle and is now designing digital cameras, which is apparently what all designers aspire to after Vivienne Tam broke into the lucrative gadget design market and opened the doors for designers of all kinds. Wu’s line of cameras is called Create by Jason Wu and will be GE branded though they are produced by a company called General Imaging.

The cams come in enough colors to make a bag of Skittles jealous or you can get them clad in leather. All of them share the same features and price. The cams come with 4GB of storage built-in, 12-megapixel resolution, 3x zoom, and a 2.7-inch LCD for $179.99 (USD). You can also get the cams in 8GB capacity for $229.99. You can get both of the cams on HSN on March 16.

A couple of years back, the guys over at Yanko Design surfaced this cool watch concept that featured an unusual way of telling time. I’m happy to tell you that the Ora Unica watch has actually made it to market, and it looks awesome.

Designed by Denis Guidone, and produced by Italy’s NAVA Design, the Ora Unica does away with conventional hands, and replaces them with a big squiggly line. The modern, minimal watch is made from stainless steel, and features a mineral glass crystal and a black leather band.

At first glance, you might be confused as to how to tell time on the Ora Unica, but it’s actually quite simple. Just look at the position of the inner end of the squiggle for the current hour, and the outer end for minutes. Simple, elegant, and truly unique. Bravo, Ora Unico!

Want one of these for your own wrist? Head on over to Speranza Design, where they sell for $135 to $150 (USD), depending on size.

Guerrilla gardening is a form of activism where a gardener plants seeds or crop in abandoned land they do not own, or even public property (which I’m gonna guess is illegal). Most of these actions are done in the cover of night so they’re not caught in action. Designer Vanessa Harden has invented a few spy gadgets for these gardeners to do their work in the sun. The Precision Bombing Device I is made to look like an standard SLR camera but actually it shoots out sugar glass covered seeds like a BB gun.

I would have never imagined gardening would look so cool when using spy inspired tools. You can check out more tools on Vanessa’s design website. Honestly, I’m about to buy some sugar coated seeds so I can load up my BB gun and plant my new yard from my window.

Designer Philippe Starck is known for creating goods with style, panache and a clean modern sensibility. Now the iconic designer has put his stamp on a home sound system designed specifically for iPod, iPhone and other digital audio sources .

Created in collaboration with audio manufacturer Parrot, the oddly-named Zikmu (bless you!) speaker system features a pair of 2.5-foot tall black columns each reminiscent of the business-end of a trumpet. As a matter of fact, Starck ships the system in a recyclable package that’s designed to look like a certain brass musical instrument’s carrying case.

The Zikmu system offers not only iPod and iPhone docking, but can stream music from any PC or Mac over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth A2DP wireless technology too. The whole system can be operated by an included RF wireless remote, so line of sight isn’t required for operation.

Sound is pumped out using flat membrane NXT speaker elements, and are designed to radiate out a 360-degree sound field regardless of where you place the speakers in the room. While this is something you might want for listening to music, I don’t know if you’ll want to play The Dark Knight through these if you want to preserve the originally-intended sound imaging. The class-D amplifier is rated at 100W RMS, and the speakers can output frequencies from 50Hz up to 20kHz. So while the highs and mids should sing, don’t expect a really deep bass boom.

That said, a traditional sound profile wasn’t Starck’s intent. “We were not aiming to create just another speaker,” says Starck. “Our design focused more on making the air vibrate. There is actually a three-dimensional feel to this vibration, meaning that the air is palpable, almost humanlike in presence, like a fragrance.” Of course some perfumes are best left on the shelf. You hear me Drakkar Noir?

Priced at $1600 (USD) for the set, the Zikmu system definitely isn’t for those on a tight budget. The design sensibility and audio aspirations strike me as something that would look great in a high-end boutique hotel room more than the average living room. The Zikmu is available for pre-order now over at both Parrot and The Conran Shop, and should start shipping later this month.

For more on Philippe’s outspoken design sensibilities, here’s a brief clip of the designer shot by Fast Company during the Zikmu press roll-out:

These pint-sized characters might look similar to other artist-designed vinyl toys, but take another look and you’ll notice that they don’t just look cool hanging out on your desktop, they’re actually functional.

Eran Weinberg’s Headphonies combine the appeal of funky designer vinyl toys with the utility of a portable speaker. Just plug your iPod or other medial player into the back of your Headphonie, and start cranking out the tunes.

Each 3-inch tall character features a unique, artist-created persona (and of course, a pair of tiny headphones). For portability, the mini-speakers have a built-in rechargeable battery that you can juice up with your USB port in about an hour.

Characters include Mad Ape, Modern Hero, Anarchy, Ninja, Pink Bear, and a pair of nondescript black and white guys. Since each design is a limited-edition, some styles are already sold out, so you’d better move quick to get the ones you want.

The entire collection can be found over at the Headphonies online shop for $30 (USD) each.
