SparkFun’s newly redesigned portable rotary phone ($249.95 USD) has been upgraded to work with any Bluetooth phone. Just pair the “portable” phone with your cell phone, and you can send and receive calls on this old school rotary phone. Even the ringer, analog dial and dial tone work the way you’d expect them to. And since the phone runs on a powerful rechargeable Lithium-Polymer battery, you really can take it anywhere.

Now I just need a portable version of my Batphone, and I’ll be all set.

Maybe I’m just too geeky, but I have a tendency to be drawn to ultra-modern digital watches. But sometimes there’s nothing like a good, old-fashioned analog dial. At least the guys over at Nixon are thinking a little outside the box with their latest analog watch design, the fashionably geeky R1G1.

The R1G1 ($150 to $200 USD) features a set of four mechanical hands to keep track of time and date. Two hands rotate around the middle of the dial, one displaying seconds and the other showing minutes. A pair of speedometer-like gauges display the current hour and the day of the month.

Each watch is powered by a quartz movement housed in a sleek brushed stainless steel case. All four hands live beneath a sturdy hardened mineral glass crystal to keep them safe and sound. They’re available in several different color ways, all with stylish leather bands.

You can find all four R1G1 designs over at NixonNow.

This oversize wristwatch conceals a little secret beneath its flip-top. Just pop it open, and you’ll reveal a fully-functional multimedia mobile phone inside.

Under the hood of the U200i mobile phone wristwatch dwells a quad-band (unlocked) GSM phone, complete with a 1.3MP digital camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and full media player capabilities. And thanks to an external OLED display, you can check the time, signal strength and battery meter at a glance.

You can even watch tiny little MP4 videos on the 1.5-inch color display, which also happens to offer touchscreen capabilities. In addition to the stainless steel case shown in these pictures, the U200i comes in a solid black case design as well. But my favorite part of the design has to be the decidedly retro round dial pad, complete with otherworldly blue backlighting.

So if you’re ready to wear the kitchen sink on your wrist, you can grab the U200i mobile phone watch from Chinagrabber for $234.99 USD.

[with a tip of the hat to TFTS]

It’s been a while since I brought you guys any cool new watches. It’s not for lack of trying, but there just hasn’t been much that’s hit my desk that really caught my eye. So I was pleased when I came across these, the latest analog timepiece from the guys over at Nixon.

The Nixon Murf takes a 1970s-style dial watch, and puts a decidedly modern spin on the design. The watch features rotating hour and minute wheels that rotates behind a fixed-position indicator. In addition the the minimal black and stainless design shown above, the Murf comes in several other color-ways ranging from the sublime to the surreal.

The watches are all powered by a direct drive quartz movement, and feature LED illumination for ease of nighttime viewing. Prices for the Murf range from $300 to $350. Check out the full collection here.

When I first looked at this watch, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of numbers displayed on the face at once. But once I took a second to get my bearings, I actually thought it was pretty cool.

The Lip Mystic displays time using three concentric circular discs, the outermost one containing hours, the middle one showing minutes, and the inner one indicating seconds. As the wheels turn, they align behind a metal window which highlights the current time. Now I see where Seiko got their inspiration for their recent Discus watch.

The Mystic features a stainless case with a Swiss quartz movement and a leather band. The case design of the watch is actually based on an original 1970s design, revamped using modern components and manufacturing techniques. You can find the Mystic over on Watchismo for $299, in several different case and band colors.

I recently came across watchmaker Vestal, who makes original designer watches with a decidedly modern spin. The artists of Vestal use music as their inspiration for their designs, and their music video filled website reinforces this sentiment.

There are a ton of really great watches in their current collection, and one that caught my eye in particular was the $210 Metal Monte Carlo.

This watch seamlessly connects the analog and digital worlds in a sleek modern watch face. It features a beautiful, clean stainless steel case, and a face that incorporates a small analog dial (with second hand) and a inverted grey-on-black LCD display. The monochromatic backdrop to the watch face is especially striking.

Another favorite has to be the $137 Rosewood, which actually features a case which is crafted from real wood, with each piece linked together using a flexible wire.

I also really like the $179 Emery. This watch is one of a series which is inspired by the designs of classic radios from the 1960s. It really does look like an old radio dial.

These are just a few of the unique designs that their talented designers are cranking out. Be sure to check out all of the cool watches over on the Vestal website.

A while back we showed you the retro bluetooth handset you could use with your mobile phone. Well if you’re one of those people who didn’t think that took the concept far enough, you might want to check out the Portable Rotary Phone from Spark Fun Electronics.

This fully-functional, highly impractical piece of nostalgia is really a tri-band GSM mobile phone. It’s designed to let you make calls using the rotary dial, and rings a real bell when you have an incoming call. Just add your current phone provider’s SIM card, and you’ll be up and running. The phone runs on a built-in rechargeable battery, and costs $399 USD.

I can’t wait to see people walking down the street talking on these.
