The new Pentax K-01 was designed by Marc Newson, and it definitely has a different look from ordinary cameras. You’ve got a nice assortment of colors to choose from to make this mirror-less camera distinctive. Newson also collaborated on the design of the base 40mm F2.8 lens, which is 0.36 inches in width, just large enough for a manual focus ring.

The K-01 uses the standard Pentax K-mount, so it’s compatible with numerous other lenses the company has made. The large APS-C CMOS sensor has 16MP and supports full 1080p HD video capture. The back features a 3″ high-res LCD screen, but no optical viewfinder.

There are three different colors available, the black and yellow, the all black, and the black and white. The K-01 will launch this March for $900(USD) with the 40mm lens or $750 for the body alone.

I have been using a GoPro HD Hero Motorsports edition camcorder for a long time now for filming the fun I have down at the race track. The little cameras shoot great video and still shots, even if the menu of the original is hard to use. GoPro has announced a new version of that camera called the HD Hero2.

The new camera is improved all around, and one of the big new features is an easy to use plain language menu system so you don’t need the instructions to change modes. The new camera also has a professional 11MP image sensor, two times faster image processor, a two times sharper glass lens, and pro-level low light performance

The new camera also gets some new video modes with Full 170º, Medium 127º, Narrow 90º FOV in 1080p and 720p Video. The camera can also now record in new faster fps modes for slow motion video up to 120fps.

The Hero2 camera can also snap an 11MP still photo every half-second in timelapse mode. The coolest new feature is that the HD Hero2 will work with a new GoPro app for letting you see what the camera is shooting. The HD Hero2 comes in outdoor, motorsports, and surf editions for $299(USD) each.

I was watching this show on TV the other day about the techniques that photographers used to capture some seriously awesome-looking shots. Most of them required the use of expensive accessories and bulky equipment, but the shots proved to be priceless. I have no plans of going pro (or investing that much money into cameras and stuff), which is why I think the Digimo Camera Concept really hits the spot.

The Digimo is way smaller than most conventional digital cameras out there in the market today. And it comes with a lot of accessories and attachments, right out of the box (or, well, it’s future box, if it does get picked up by a manufacturer), so you can start taking unconventional and professional shots right away.

I think what makes the Digimo so fun is because it’s versatile and you can use it in ways that you’d only imagine with the camera that you might own now. It allows wireless linking between the cameras to achieve coordinated shots, and you can also control the shooters wirelessly to view and capture images remotely.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that somewhere, some marketing company did some research and decided that people dig white gadgets, especially when they are issued in a “limited edition.” I’m not sure you can even could say the white Ricoh GR Digital IV camera is a limited edition considering 10,000 of them will be made.

Other than being white, both versions of the GR Digital IV are the same. The camera has a 28mm/F1.9 lens and uses the GR Engine III and a high sensitivity CCD. The image sensor is 10MP unit and the camera has a 3.0-inch rear LCD that has 1.23 million dots and is optimized for viewing outside. It also has a special, fast focusing system with 190 AF points.

It can focus in 0.2 seconds so you won’t miss a shot. The camera also features image stabilization and manual adjustments, and a bunch of scene modes as well to give you clear and vivid photos in just about any setting. Pricing is unknown at this time.

We have robot vacuum cleaners. Can we just pause for a second and really think about that fact? Robots equipped with lasers and complicated algorithms just to clean a room. They can even recharge themselves! As if that wasn’t enough, the latest model in LG’s Roboking line of vacuum cleaners can also serve as a security camera.

Like a scion of a blue blooded line with three middle names, all of them fancy, the LG Roboking Triple Eye VR6180VMNC deserves its typically long and convoluted designation. That’s because aside from the two cameras that it uses to decide how to go about sucking dirt, it has a third camera that users can activate to capture the robot’s surroundings. The camera combos with the robot’s Wi-Fi capability and a complementary mobile app, allowing its master to monitor headquarters from a smartphone.

But that’s not all that the Roboking Triple Eye can do. It’s also equipped with voice recognition technology, allowing its master to verbally command it to stop cleaning, charge itself, annihilate all who stand in his way, etc.

For now it seems like the impossibly smart Roboking Triple Eye is exclusive to Korean households, but you can bet competitors all over the world will come up with something similar soon enough. After all, the Roboking wasn’t the first of its kind. Jeez. Robot vacuum cleaners.

We may not have impossibly thin phones with holographic displays just yet, but we still live in pretty modern times. Just take a look at one of Nikon’s newest digital cameras, the Coolpix S1200pj. Aside from the usual picture- and video-taking features, the S1200pj also has a built-in LED projector. What’s more, the projector can be used to display not only the media stored in the camera itself but from Apple’s iOS devices as well.

This is actually Nikon’s third camera to have a built-in projector, but the difference with their latest effort is that the S1200pj uses DLP technology, giving it a brighter output while at the same time consuming less power. The projector has a 13mm/f2.1 lens with a 20 lumen light source composed of one red, one green and one blue LED. It can display images up to 60″ in size at distances of up to 10′.

As you might have expected, even with the improved technology the S1200pj’s projector is still power hungry. It will drain the camera’s Li-ion battery within an hour of use, so it’s not a permanent alternative to the built-in 3″ LCD screen. Here’s a commercial for the Coolpix S1200pj:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As you saw in the video, iOS devices connect to the S1200pj by way of a 30-pin connector to 3.5mm cable. Engadget says that Nikon will bundle the cable with the camera for at least the first three months after its release, so I guess late adopters will have to cough up extra to buy the cable separately. The camera’s other connectivity options are a digital A/V, VGA and USB port. The camera also has a slot for SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. Here’s Engadget’s hands-on with the camera:

The Nikon Coolpix S1200pj is available for pre-order on Amazon for $429 (USD). I only talked about the projector since it’s the defining feature of the S1200pj, but no one’s going to buy this for that feature alone. Check out Nikon’s website for the camera’s full specifications.

Fujifilm has a bunch of different digital cameras for photography fans to choose from. The company has unveiled a new digital camera called the FinePix F600 EXR. The new camera is aimed at the person wanting a compact camera with high quality photo capability and GPS for traveling. The camera will geotag images, but it will do a lot more than that too.

The F600 EXR GPS system is also able to find where the user is and show then any landmarks nearby so they can go see them. The resolution of the camera is 16MP and it uses a new EXR-CMOS sensor. The EXRs Auto sensor also has Motion Detection capability. The motion detection will automatically set the camera to take clearer photos of moving subjects in any light condition.

The camera also has smart digital zoom that will shoot clear pictures with no blur when the digital zoom is used. The sensor is also back side illuminated making it work better in low light situations. It also offers sensitivity to ISO 12,800. On the rear of the camera is a 3-inch 460,000 pixel resolution display. In addition to still images, the F600 EXR shoots 1080p HD video, along with stereo sound capture and a 320 fps high-speed video mode. It also captures 360-degree panoramas.

You can pre-order the FujiFilm F600 EXR over at Amazon for $349.95 (USD). No word yet on a release date.

You’d expect there to be some fancy cameras that can capture high-speed video for slow motion shots, but I never thought that there would be one that could capture a million frames per second.

But before you get too excited, you should know that Phantom v1610 Camera does the deed as more of a marketing ploy than anything else (it worked on us). Regardless, you’ll be happy to know that it can still capture 720p HD video at a pretty mind-blowing frame rate.

The Phantom V1610 can capture a million frames a second using a ridiculously low resolution of 128×16, so you won’t go bonkers over those images. But at 720p HD resolution, it can still capture at a not-too-shabby 18,100 fps.

If you’re wondering why you’d want something so fast, this high-speed digital camera allows to capture those amazing high-definition, slow-mo shots you’ve been admiring in various TV shows, commercials and music videos. Sadly you’ll have to pay around $100,000 to get this one for your next shoot.

Owners of the Leica D-Lux 5: are you sick of your camera’s classy black color? So tired of it that you’re willing to pay nearly half of the cost of the camera itself to get it re-painted? There, there. Don’t worry. ColorWare’s got your back.

For just $400 (USD), the gadget-pimping company will customize the color of your camera’s seven major parts – front, back, top, lens body, lens face, hot shoe insert and port door – as well as that of the lens cap. As with other ColorWare services, you can choose from a variety of colors and a glossy or soft finish.

If you’re still planning to buy a D-Lux 5, have a look at it’s vanilla form now. Looooooook. Don’t like it as it is? Then get a brand new and custom colorized D-Lux 5 from ColorWare for $1,200. That’s not too bad if you think the customization is worth the price, since the camera itself costs around $800 nowadays. Then again, $1,200 can get you a significantly more powerful camera.

I know, I can’t believe it either. The diminutive Chobi cameras are transforming from expensive toys into… I don’t know, a line of functional collectibles? Tiny photographers looking for something more high-tech than the Chobi Cam One now have an alternative – the Chobi Cam One HD.

Unlike its predecessor, which can only take pictures at 1600 x 1200 and videos at 640 x 480, this upgraded version snaps photos at 3264 x 2448 resolution and records 1280 x 720 videos at 30fps. The trade off? An increase in size… by about 0.1 to 0.3 inches on each side. Whip out a magnifying glass and inspect the two Chobi Cam Ones side-by-side:

The Chobi Cam One HD even offers add-on zoom, wide-angle and fish-eye lenses. The tiny camera has a microSDHC slot that supports cards up to 32GB in storage, and can transfer data over USB. Its battery can be fully charged in an hour, after which it’s good for about 25 minutes of shooting videos.

Here’s a more jarring comparison of the Chobi Cam One HD. I know DSLRs are chunky, but it’s a building next to this bugger.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Chobi Cam One HD sells for appx. $185 (USD) at GeekStuff4U. Unfortunately the accessory lenses are not bundled even at that steep price; you can get those from JTT Online for about $30-$60 each.

I’m sure some of you still remember Rob Spence and his Eyeborg project, which aims to develop a video camera that fits in a prosthetic eye, effectively substituting for the one Spence lost when he was a kid. Now, a woman named Tanya Marie Vlach wants the exact same thing and is hoping you could help her.

Vlach lost her left eye in an accident back in 2005. Ever since then, she’s been asking for help and looking into possible ways of regaining her sight. She now has a tentative design for a digital cam-equipped prosthetic eye, which she hopes will be able to take 720p video at best, has a wireless transmitter, 3x optical zoom and MPEG-4/H.264 recording, among other things.

But becoming a cyborg costs money, and that’s where you come in. Whereas Spence fitted his eye socket with a glowing LED to gain publicity (and thus help), Vlach chose a more current route: Kickstarter.

Vlach is hoping to raise $15,000 (USD) by August 3. As always, backers will get freebies depending on the amount they pledge. Visit her Kickstarter page and pledge if you want to be part of her groundbreaking project.

I’m not sure if Spence has already succeeded with his project, but if not it would be awesome if he and Vlach could team up and <del>form a superhero team</del> share information and promote their common goal as one. Mr. & Ms. Eyeborg – imagine the publicity that would generate!

Instant cameras should be instant, right? When you say instant camera I always think of the old Polaroids that would spit the picture out the front for you and you had to set it aside to let it finish developing. That usually took a few minutes before your picture was done. Now, a dude named Niklas Roy has created his own instant camera, only it’s not quite instant.

The picture doesn’t come shooting out the front of Roy’s creation as soon as you hit the shutter. His camera prints the photo line-by-line, and takes three minutes to finish. To make the wait even more agonizing, the camera has no memory, so the subject has to stand still for three minutes for the shot to work. Three minutes is an eternity when you have to be still.

The camera was made using an old black-and-white video camera. The camera is attached via an ATmega8 microcontroller to a dot-matrix roll printer like you would normally find printing receipts at the store. The prints are then output onto the cheap receipt paper.

It’s a cool concept and all, but give the thing some storage and I’ll like it better.

Japanese design studio Powershovel has come up with a camera worthy of challenging the CHOBi mini cam for the title of World’s Most Easily Lost Camera. The CLAP digital camera measures a mere 1.4″ x 2.8 x 0.59″ and weighs only 24g. I also prefer its simple design over the CHOBi’s chunky dSLR look.

The CLAP has a 2-megapixel F2.8 (3.2mm) lens. It can shoot images at 1280 x 1024 resolution, saving them as JPEG files, and video at 720 x 480, which are saved as AVI files. As you can see it has a built-in USB 2.0 connector that is used both to export files as well as recharge the camera’s internal Li-ion battery. It also has a microSD slot (supports up to 16GB) for saving stills and videos on the go. No, it doesn’t have a viewfinder, but even if it had one it wouldn’t be of much use anyway.

The CLAP digital camera is available on Amazon in six different colors for $49.95 (USD) each. If you’re going to get one I strongly recommend that you get hold of a 1mm piece of string, rope or cord and make use of the camera’s strap hole.

Nikon was on hand at some sort of French photography show called Hello Demain, which apparently means Hello Tomorrow. A the show the photography giant was showing off new prototype and concept digital cameras that don’t look like anything I would have expected from Nikon. Flickr member Montie_J snapped a bunch of photos of these unusual cameras at the show.

This camera is really cool and goes a few steps further in customization than just letting you choose lenses. The camera has an interchangeable grip and LCD as well. The weirdest of the devices is a concept called the Nikon Multiball. There aren’t any real details and the thing looks like some sort of 3D panoramic camera to me.

The next prototype camera looks like tablet with handles on each side. The thing has a 6-inch screen and an adjustable lever. Presumably the camera is on front and the big screen would let you see your photos and video more comfortably.

The Nikon i-Ball is anther concept with no description, but from its looks, I would bet it’s a webcam of some sort.

What do you think of these cameras?

Pentax has a bunch of cameras under its belt and the company has trotted a new one out today that looks verty cool. If you like a camera with high quality photo capability and interchangeable lenses but you want the thing to be small, the new Pentax Q might be for you. The camera is hailed as the world’s smallest interchangeable lens digital camera system.

The Pentax Q series camera has a 12.4MP resolution image sensor and uses a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor. Pentax says this is a new category compared to normal point-and-shoots, APS-C, and micro four thirds cameras. The sensor is backlit to allow for better light gathering. That means you will be able to get clearer photos in all light conditions. The camera uses a new Q mount for lenses. That also means you will need all new lenses though if you are moving from another camera system.

The camera has a bunch of user DSLR-esque shooting modes, and has a lightweight magnesium alloy body. The camera has a number of effects modes such as HDR integrated and a quick dual on the front for adjusting settings. It can shoot 1080p full HD video at 30fps and has a sensor shift shake reduction system with integrated dust reduction tech. It’s not cheap though. The camera will ship in early fall for $800 (USD) and the optional viewfinder is $249.95.

It’s something pretty basic that all photographers learn – focus is everything, and when you don’t have it in your photos, you might as well start over. That’s why I find this new technology from Lytro interesting. You take shots with it now, and the camera focuses on your subjects later.

Their light field camera tech is supposed to capture all parts of a scene so that the image can be focused on one or multiple sections after uploading it. It’s supposed to eliminate the need to focus when you capture images and allows you to choose which section to focus on during post-processing. This tech uses their special sensor to capture the color, intensity, and vector directions of the rays of light in a scene. It then relies on algorithms and math rather than mechanical parts to focus after the fact.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The technology will allow photographers to switch between multiple focus points while looking at their digital photos. While pro photographers won’t really need it, it will be cool to see this tech make it to consumer gadgets like smartphones and point-and-shoot cams.

If you have a DSLR camera with 15 or 16 megapixels, you might feel like you have the resolution to shoot just about anything. What you don’t have the resolution for is shooting truly epic shots of the nighttime sky. I’m not talking about pics of the trees and stars; I am talking about shooting photos up close and personal with deep space objects like stars and nebulae.

To do that, 30MP or even 50MP just isn’t enough resolution. The sensor needed for this sort of photography is the 268MP image sensor you see here that is designed for the OmegaCAM. This is a camera sensor that is used with a telescope on Earth to shoot photos at the European Southern Observatory.

The massive sensor is made up of 32 different CCD sensors and weighs in at 1700 pounds. I don’t even want to know how expensive it was. Check out the photos here to see just how gigantic the sensor actually is.

The image below was shot with the OmegaCAM, and at this resolution doesn’t do the original justice.

Extreme and action sports are very cool and I like some of the activities that fall into the category. I am not into skateboarding because I would crack off my coccyx in about 2 seconds. I do, however, get into motorsports like road courses and autocross though. Those things are particularly well suited to recording so you can show off how fast you can go around the cones or the track.

For any action sport, you need a camcorder that’s up to the task. It needs to be small and very strong. An action sports camcorder needs a bunch of different mounting options too. I usually use a GoPro camera for my racing stuff, but this new Replay XD1080 camcorder looks pretty appealing. The little camera looks more like a flashlight than a camcorder and it is waterproof and impact resistant.

The camera records in 1080p HD resolution and offers other resolutions too. It can record at 30 fps in 1080p or up to 60 fps in 720p resolution. The camera has a 135-degree field of view that doesn’t cause distortion and can even shoot still shots in a time-lapse mode with shots every 3, 5, 15, or 30 seconds.

It’s not always easy to get kids to flash a smile or pay attention to the camera, especially when you’re all huddled together flashing wacky faces or flaunting formal poses waiting for the flash to go off. The photographer begins the inevitable countdown: “3, 2, 1…”

And it is that exact moment that Junior decides he wants to pull your hair or scream for ice cream or look the other way as the picture gets snapped.

So to decrease (since it’s probably near impossible to aim for eliminating them completely) the odds of this happening at the next family gathering or vacation, Samsung has announced that they’re making 21 oh-so-adorable camera animations available for download for free to display on your camera LCD so your kid will find something worthwhile to look at while they’re photos are being snapped.

The animations are only available for the Samsung ST700, PL170 and PL120 though, as announced at CES 2011, so if you’ve already got one of these in your camera bag then head on over to Samsung’s site in a few weeks to get the animations.

Generally, when I write about Leica digital cameras, it’s to mock the things for the crazy high prices as much as to talk about the cool design and performance of the cameras. Leica has a new digital camera that it is showing off today that lacks some of that cool retro style that I like in the expensive offerings and makes up for that somewhere that matters most with many of us – price.

The new camera is called the V-Lux 30, and it will sell for $749 (USD). That is a lot of money for a point-and-shoot that has no interchangeable lenses, but in the Leica realm, that is a downright bargain. For that much loot, you get a 15.1MP sensor with a 16x zoom lens. The camera can record HD video at up to 1080i resolution and use the full 16x zoom range doing it.

The camera also has a 3D mode of some sort and integrated GPS. That GPS allows for geotagging images and the camera has a POI database to help guide you on your travels. The rear LCD is a 3-inch touchscreen allows touch control and has a resolution of 460K pixels.

The Leica V-Lux 30 should be available sometime this June.
