Clumsy Eaters Can Stain by the Numbers On These Dish Towels

I gave up on fabric placemats after having my sister and her young kids over for dinner one evening. While I adore my nieces and nephews, they are the messiest eaters on the planet and my placemats just had to go to the bin after their visit, since the stains were so stubborn and wouldn’t come off, even after several washes.

So even though they’re meant for cleaning up kitchen messes, when I saw these Stain By Number tea towels from Fred & Friends, I immediately thought of getting them and using them as placemats the next time my sister comes around for another visit.

As the name implies, you won’t be using any paint or coloring materials to fill in the colors to make the picture come to life. Instead, you’re expected to use various food items to stain the indicated area with the specified colors. This might encourage the kids to make an even bigger mess, but at least it’ll seem more like art this way.

The Stain By Number dish towels will be available this October over at Perpetual Kid, and will sell for $14.99 for a set of three.

Salty Pixels Salt and Pepper Shaker: Wait… Which is Which Again?

Here’s a geeky salt and pepper shaker for Windows fans. The Salty Pixels salt and pepper shaker is shaped like the classic hourglass cursor. Why? Because the new blue spiral thingy in Vista and 7 doesn’t look like a shaker.

Keep an eye on Meninos’ website to see if the Salty Pixels shaker is on sale yet. I think they should also make a slightly different pepper shaker version, otherwise dinner time will repeatedly hang as you process which shaker has what inside of it.

Fred & Friends is at it again, with another one of their tongue-in-cheek household gadgets. This time, they’ve created the perfect salt and pepper shaker – the SWITCH.

This clever tabletop shaker has a simple “on-off” switch on the top, which either diverts salt or pepper to the appropriate opening on the side. No electricity required. It’s simple, geeky and fun. Expect the SWITCH to hit stores later this Spring.

Boy, it seems like forever since we featured any sort of Space Invaders goodies on the site. Thankfully, the Invaders’ drought appears to be over.

Whether or not you like to throw extra seasonings on your food, you’ve got to love these Space Invaders salt and pepper shakers if you’ve got even a bit of 8-bit spirit. Designer Anderson Horta created these Spicy Invaders for your dining pleasure.

Alas and alack, these are still just in the conceptual stage, so you might have to wait a while to satisfy your Invaders S&P needs afterall.

Supper Sound System Sounds Scrumptious

Japan’s Taguchi Craft company is readying a new sound system that’s designed to looks like pieces you might find on your dining table. The Supper Sound System is a series of speakers mounted inside of vessels that look like ceramic tumblers and bottles along with a base station that looks like a serving dish.

Not only do they feature a beautifully simple industrial design, they’re likely to sound good too. You see, Taguchi is best known for producing audiophile grade speaker systems, so I don’t think they’d let style win over substance.

Pricing hasn’t yet been announced, but the company is targeting an Winter 2007/2008 release date.

R2-D2 Grinds Out Fresh-a Pepp-a

Star Wars may be over 30 years old, but that hasn’t stopped those LucasFilm merchandising folks from cranking out fresh ideas. That’s why I’m absolutely loving these R2 unit pepper mills.

Imagine having the boss over for dinner, asking if he’d like some pepper on his salad, then whipping out one of these little droids. You’ll surely get that promotion you’ve been clamoring for.

Just twist R2′s head, and out comes fresh-ground pepper. The mills come in both R2-D2 (white/blue) and RD-Q5 (black) versions, although I wish that the white one was salt, and the black one was pepper. All I need now is a C-3PO oil and vinegar dispenser and I’ll be good to go.

Star Wars fans can pre-order the R2 pepper mills now from NCSX for $19 each.
