Swiss artist Tom Samui has been creating junkyard wonders for the last decade or so. He works with a team of 15 people creating these amazing sculptures made out of recycled automobile parts, like this intricate elf:

Tom has created hundreds of these sculptures, entirely made out of scrap car and motorcycle parts. You’ll find animals, vehicles, people, creatures from fantasy and even some furniture in his collection. Many of the sculptures aren’t small, either. His T-Rex is about 28 feet in height. The build process involves collecting cars from a junkyard, then sorting through the parts. Then they are cleaned, and welded together, then polished and lacquered. Nothing is wasted.

It takes about 400 hours to complete a large sculpture. This translates to about two to three months.

Tom has recently started to collaborate with his friend Marco Mahler, and they are available for custom work. Check it out here if you want them to make you a special sculpture.

If you’ve always been fascinated with the Jurassic Park movies and somehow wished that you were alive in the era of the dinosaurs, then this might be something you might want to check out: the huge, life-like 20-foot Animatronic Triceratops, available from Hammacher Schlemmer.

This motion-sensing triceratops can detect the presence of any onlookers and react by letting out a loud bellow, moving its head left and right, stomping and scuffing its forelimbs, or opening its jaws while growling. Each eye is integrated with motion-activated cameras that work in conjunction with an interactive software installed that enables the prehistoric recreation to detect and recognize the facial features of onlookers.

This animatronic Triceratops has actually seen a whole lot of the United States, as it has been on tour in different museums all over the country as part of a traveling exhibit. You can read more about purchasing this massive tri-horned animatronic if you’ve got a lot of money–and I do mean a lot of money–to burn by heading on over to Hammacher Schlemmer.

The Hughes (Hugheses?) have done it again. Famous for turning gadgets into jewelery-laden objects of pure sin, their latest creation is even more exotic and will surely have millionaires queue up for an order. Designed by Stuart Hughes and crafted by his wife Katrina, the iPhone 4 History Edition is filled with platinum and diamonds, but the main attraction here is found in the rear cover, which is made of meteoric stone and a 65-million year old T-Rex tooth. I don’t know whether to hate or applaud this couple.

Stuart says he wanted something “fierce”, and there’s not a lot of things that symbolize that more than a T-Rex tooth, so they got a dino tooth and some space rock (I assume it’s as simple as that for a high roller) and rubbed the two together until the tooth was finely ground. Unfortunately we can’t really see any evidence of the dinosaur tooth in the finished product. Fortunately, I can’t afford this thing, so there’s no chance of me being duped.

Moneyed peoples, you know what to do – place your dainty fingers onto your keyboards and saunter onto Stuart Hughes’ website. The price, you say? Surely you jest! Oh I get it, you desire for the mandibles of your peons to promptly plummet to their unkempt floors. It’s £39,995 (approx. $62, 760 USD). Which is approximately… zero in rich man’s dollars. Still, you’d best hurry, because only ten of these will be made. T-Rex teeth don’t grow on trees.

Hey there. Having a normal weekend so far? Let’s make it freaky then; that’s what I’m paid to do. Below is a shot of watchmaker Louis Moinet’s latest creation. It’s called the Jurassic Tourbillon, a watch whose dial contains “fragments of authentic fossilized dinosaur bones.”

The Jurassic Tourbillion’s case is adorned by 18K white gold, diamonds, and sapphire crystals, but who cares. Hell I wouldn’t mind if the watch can’t tell the time. What’s important is that it has monster bits inside. The watch will be shown off at Baselworld 2010 in Switzerland this month. What can be more awesome than a watch with dinosaur bones? I’ll tell you what: a watch with an actual dinosaur inside. Top that!

Robo-Rex is the brainchild of Alyse and Remi. It’s an awesome LEGO Technics build that they designed themselves. While some of the gears and parts are decorative, a lot of them are used for Robo-Rex’s articulations. The dinolegobot was inspired by this crazy German commercial.

This has got to be the coolest thing I’ve seen this week. These incredibly small dinosaur kits let you build a miniature museum of natural history on your desktop.

Artist Kelly Farrell’s Tinysaurs are incredibly weensy kits which let you build your own mini-dinos.

Each one is laser cut out of oak tag board using a 35 watt cutting laser, and pre-perfed for (relatively) easy assembly – assuming you’ve got some really steady hands.

Assembly of Tinysaurs requires tweezers, some white glue, and some patience. But once built, these miniaturesauruses are truly a sight to behold – especially if you have a magnifying glass lying around.

The T-Rex, triceraptops, stegosaurus and woolly mammoth kits are all available over at Kelly’s Etsy shop, the Maker’s Market, or Everything Tiny and cost just $7 (USD) unassembled, and $16 with a pair of tweezers and glue in a handy gift tin.

If you don’t have the patience to build these miniature marvels for yourself, you can also buy a pre-assembled dino under glass for about $60 bucks – but where’s the fun in that?

A new species of dinosaur has been discovered at Craftster, and it is adawwwwwrable. I’ll give it the scientific name Facelessthicipus woolysaurus, but you can call it Dinohorsie.

The 2 ft. long Dinohorsie was made by the crazy imaginative craftster sparrowarms : “My daughter has always called Dinosaurs, Dinohorsies which got me thinking: what would a Dinohorsie look like?” A long-necked, faceless wet dog, apparently. But it’s still cute. What’s not cute at all is Herb, Dinohorsie’s buddy, which sparrowarms made from the leftover fake fur. Herb freaks me out so much (and his picture is low-res) that I’d rather you go to Craftster if you want to have a look at his face, which is also his body.

Unfortunately he’ll have to be decapitated before you can save your data.

He also has a prehistoric storage capacity, a measly 2 GB. But I bet that’s more than enough to carry all your stuff. And since the actual flash disk is wrapped inside his head, you don’t have to take his entire body with you.

So go and tell mom and dad to buy you one from robotbaby at Etsy for only $28 (USD). Tell them “This is a great way for me to be introduced to the world of computers and learn the perks of flash storage as well as the value of regularly backing up my data!” Eh what the hell. You probably know how to download from Usenet already.

Bronkie might–might–have been marginally cooler.

The Flickr set includes some in-process shots and the whole project looks pretty simple. Cut an iPhone-shaped slot in your favorite object and make a hole for cabling. Voila! Now your favorite random object can be used to charge one of your favorite useful objects. It’s a win all around.

Imagine if you will, a gigantic killing machine, descending on your town, crushing everything in its wake. Now imagine that same monster can fit in your pocket, and protect all your precious computer files.

Bone Collection’s Dinosaur Drivers are USB flash memory devices that look like cartoony versions of their prehistoric brethren. And if pocket-size dinosaurs aren’t enough, these ones are of the fire-breathing variety.

These aren’t just any old green dinosaurs, they’re available in a variety of colors including an oh-so-wrong hot pink. Each one is made from a flexible silicone shell that flips open to reveal the USB connector.

So crush, crumble and chomp your way over to X-Treme Geek and grab one of these guys for $21.95 (USD) for a 4GB dino.

This new robotics platform out of Korea lets you build a variety of unique robots from a single set of modular parts. RoboBuilder offers a complete kit of interchangeable modules which come together to form computer programmable mini-bots.

Out of the box, there are three “standard” robot designs, HUNO, DINO and DOGY. HUNO is a humanoid robot, capable of walking on two legs, and can perform moves like walking, jogging, headstands and kicking.

DINO is sort of like a dinosaur, standing on two legs with a third appendage that resembles a tail. The prehistoric robot can move much faster than HUNO, and can thrash its tail about.

Last but not least is DOGY, a four-legged mode which simulates the movements of a robotic canine. Thanks to its extra legs, it’s the fastest of the bot modes, and can be programmed to run, sit, lie down or other dog-like movements.

Additional modules let you build even more complex robots. If you have enough you can create some really cool custom robots, like this awesome spiderbot…

The kits come in either a simple black design, or a clear body loaded with programmable LEDs inside under the see through shell, letting you easily create your own disco ‘bots. Best of all RoboBuilder is encouraging its users to share designs and programming on their online community.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

U.S. pricing for RoboBuilder kits isn’t known but Korea’s Funshop has started offering kits from KRW 450,000 to 660,000 (appx. $433 to $634 USD).

Remember the Robosaurus? Let me refresh your memory. The gigantic robotic dinosaur looks like a metal, fire-breathing Tyrannosaurus Rex, and might be just about as fierce. Capable of picking up cars, then crushing them with its razor-sharp jaws, I certainly wouldn’t want to run into one in a back alley.

So it’s with much glee that I report that the Robosaurus is up for auction. That’s right, you can own the giant beast and put it on your front lawn to chomp on unpleasant neighbors (or at least melt their cars). That’s assuming you can get it past your nosy neighborhood association — though they’d be the first ones I’d feed to the giant metal automaton.

Created by inventor Doug Malewicki all the way back in 1989, the 40-foot tall robot can shoot 20-foot flames from its nostrils, and can crush metal with up to 20,000 pounds of force. If you’re interested in throwing your hat into the ring for this bad boy, you can find more details at Barrett Jackson Auctions.

Instead of using some sort of propeller or engine, this guy just uses good old fashioned wing power. The $69 R/C Flying Pterosaur can fly indoors or out, and has a foam-cushioned body to prevent damage from crashes. Its unique design provides control not only over ascent and descent, but also the ability to steer in flight.

The prehistoric flying creature has a rechargeable battery that should provide about 10 minutes of flight on a 30 minute charge, and the remote works from up to 100 feet away.
