TARDIS and R2-D2 Safes Secure Your Stuff Through the Power of Science Fiction

Whether you’re into Doctor Who or Star Wars (or both) – there’s a new way for you to secure your small valuables. These new digital “smartsafes” were spotted during the 2012 UK Toy Fair, and they look pretty nifty.

For starters, there’s a safe that looks just like the TARDIS, complete with all the appropriate blue Police Box details, including a flashing blue light on the roof. It looks like it’s a pretty decent size, and could hold small, but precious things like coins, jewelry or even small documents. Of course, there’s no telling if they might get transported to some other time or dimension once you put them in there and shut the door.

Star Wars fans can skip the TARDIS and go straight for the R2-D2 safe, which finally proves that there wasn’t actually a little person inside of the droid, but a hollow storage compartment perfect for holding onto your precious galactic credits and other goodies.

Each safe locks using an app which runs on your iPhone, iPod Touch or Android phone which outputs a series of blinking lights when docked – so your only key is a mobile device with your code keyed in. Of course, the biggest problem with small safes like these is that if a criminal really wanted what was inside, they could just pick it up and crack it open with a lightsaber, a sonic blaster, or a ball-peen hammer.

Both safes both come from UK watch and gadget company Zeon, and are expected in stores sometime around June.

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock Trailer Released

After teasing us back in December, we now have the first full-length trailer for the new Doctor Who video game The Eternity Clock. I have mixed emotions about this one. It looks like the game will be combining old-school platforming with third-person action and cutscenes. I like everything about it, except for how the characters look and move.

From what I can make out in this trailer, the character’s faces all look a bit strange and at times very claymation-like. And look at how the characters all move around. Doctor Who needs to be cool, not look like he went back in the TARDIS and got stuck in an old copy of Prince of Persia. Let’s hope they work on tuning visuals a bit more before the final game releases this March.

Everything else looks great. Will I still play it? Of course. It’s Doctor Who. Will I enjoy it? Hopefully, but I doubt it – given the abysmal track record of game and TV show/movie tie-ins. What do you guys think?

TARDIS Cookies Need Lots of Blue Frosting

Check out these awesome TARDIS gingerbread cookies. They are geekier than you might think. First, they are shaped like the Doctor’s trusty transportation vehicle. Second, they were created with a cookie cutter that was made using a 3D printer. That’s double nerd points my friend.

But where is the absolutely necessary blue frosting? Oh well, that’s probably just too much work, since you’ll want to eat them right away. The details are really nice, even if some detail is lost as it bakes. Too bad the oven doesn’t make the TARDIS sound when they are ready to come out.

If you have access to a 3D printer and want to make your own TARDIS cookie cutter, you can find the instructions here. Then just bake some and share with all your friends across time and relative dimension in space.

The TARDIS Purse, Finally the Doctor is the Companion

Some women carry so much junk in their purses, they could definitely use something that’s bigger on the inside. Like a TARDIS. No wonder TARDIS purses are becoming more popular. We recently told you about this TARDIS purse, but I think the one shown here is much neater. It probably still won’t hold all of your things, but it’s nice to see the woman toting around the Doctor for once.

This thing ought to make quite a few men want to start carrying handbags. Etsy seller LIMOchi makes them to order and it looks quality made indeed. It measures about 11″ x 6.25″ x 6.25″.

Made of blue poly leather and rigid cardboard, it is even rain-resistant and custom details can be added if you like. Any girl who carries this thing is the girl of my dreams.

Dalek Oreos, Double Stuffing, Double the Extermination

Remember that time when the Doctor bluffed his way out of Dalek extermination by using a Jammie Dodger (which is a British biscuit or cookie) and telling them it was some sort of doomsday device? Well, the Daleks are having some cookie fun of their own.

That would have been a great episode in which to feature these Dalek Oreos. The Daleks could have one-upped him by wheeling out a tray of these guys to kill his cookie.

They certainly are cute and they look delicious. They were made by Flickr user Navaboo with some help from her boyfriend and she was kind enough to share her recipe along with the image here. If you plan on throwing a Doctor Who bash anytime soon, you should serve these up to your guests.

Doctor Who and Link Hockey Jerseys for Time-Traveling Teams

Hey ice boxers – I mean hockey fans! Take five and get a load of the second batch of geeky hockey jerseys by Dave Delisle. After what must have been a successful run of his Game of Thrones and Voltron jerseys, Delisle decided to make Doctor Who and Zelda jerseys. By Zelda of course, I mean Link.

That’s the TARDIS-inspired Doctor Who jersey, complete with Police Box window graphic on the front and TARDIS shoulder patches. I don’t know if it’s bigger on the inside. Below is the Zelda jersey, which I think looks more bad ass, especially with the shield graphic.

Initially, just like with the first batch Dave had three designs, with the third one based on Battlestar Galactica. Unfortunately for BSG fans NBC Universal sent him a Cease and Desist request, which Dave promptly followed. You can view the banned design on Google’s cache of Dave’s web page if you like. Or we can just be happy with what we have and order the remaining jerseys. They cost $80 (USD) each and will only be sold until January 19, 2012. Head to Dave’s website to order.

TARDIS Cake is Tastier on the Inside

There’s nothing us geeks like more than stuff that looks like Doctor Who’s TARDIS. Except maybe a TARDIS that’s actually edible. Sign me up. You have to send mad props to the guys at UK bakery Confarreatio Cakes for pulling off this incredible TARDIS cake.

The TARDIS cake was made for the wedding of a couple of serious Doctor Who fans, and it’s intricately detailed to look just like the real deal. The iconic blue police box was made up from a stack of four 6″x6″ cakes, and apparently even has flashing LEDs up at the top powered by batteries stuffed inside the icing. Yum. Batteries.

Despite the fact that the cake was a huge hit with the bride and groom, the bakers insist they weren’t the least bit geeky. Yeah, right. Because there’s nothing at all geeky about a TARDIS wedding cake. Besides, all geeks are welcome here.

100,000-LEGO Brick Xmas Dalek: Celebrate! Uh, We Mean Exterminate!

Would I spend hour upon hour to complete a 7-foot Dalek, that’s appropriately garbed for the holidays? Probably not, but that didn’t stop the Addis family from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK, from going for it.

Fans of Doctor Who, will be impressed with what they’ve come up with. Their Dalek has all of the right colors for the holidays, and a Santa hat, all made out of LEGO bricks. In total, the family used about 100,000 bricks and 200 hours to complete their jollier than usual looking Dalek for Christmas.

Each year, the Addis family uses a different LEGO themed decoration to feature in their Christmas card. From nutcrackers, to churches, to angels, quite a few have been done in the past 18 years, but the Dalek is by far their geekiest (and greatest) creation.

A who’s who of Doctor Whos and other doctors of popular culture preserved Futurama-style in CoDdesign’s Doctorama t-shirt. I know, I know: no Zoidberg? I’m as surprised as you are.

I’m not a Doctor Who fan myself, but even if I was I’d still probably think this shirt is unbalanced in its variety. Where’s Doctor Doom? Dr. Strange? Dr. Fate? Dr. Arthur Light? And again, no Zoidberg?! The art’s great though. Dr. Manhattan’s giant head made me smile. You can order the shirt at Red Bubble for about $28 (USD).

Doctor Who Bump-N-Go Cybermat Toy Literally Shows No Teeth

The following post is from Technabob guest writer Jack Kieffer of Cool Gizmo Toys, a site that loves geeky products as well as Pandas. The site isn’t about Pandas, but those are pretty awesome anyway.

Diehard Doctor Who fans would recognize the Cybermat immediately, and would be super excited to hear that the Bump-N-Go Cybermat is available this Christmas season! For $45, you get the 6 inch-long Cybermat replica that autonomously roams your floors. By autonomously, I mean that every time it smacks its face into something, it turns around. Which, for $45, is probably the best level of autonomous available. Even some small children don’t have that plateau of intelligence! *Small child runs his face into a pole. Small child backs up. Small child runs his face into the pole again. Small child sits down and cries.*

The Bump-N-Go Cybermat is from Series 6 Episode 12 of Doctor Who, and it has some crazy awesome tail swishing action that doesn’t actually affect its movement but does affect its price because it is way cooler when it swishes its tail. Plus, an extra motor is needed, thus the production price is increased. The Bump-N-Go Cybermat is complete with red LEDs on its side, but is incomplete since its mouth is not revealed. You don’t get to see it in the episode, you don’t get to see it in the toy. This is probably just because anything the designers came up with would disappoint – the hype is too much for the Atlas of the Doctor Who World to carry. That’s why said Atlas will hand it off to some unwitting Hercules figure who will end up holding it for a very long time before the unwitting Hercules is able to wit said Atlas back into holding up the world. Couple of screwball knuckleheads – it’s best just to avoid the situation entirely and save ourselves a massive headache.

Gingerbread TARDIS: I Hope Your Stomach is Bigger on the Inside

This gingerbread TARDIS looks yummy. But is a gingerbread TARDIS better than a ginger companion? Discuss.

This awesome Doctor Who treat is not new, it was made (and presumably eaten) in 2006, but since it is the proper time of year and since it looks delicious, I just had to share it. It won’t traverse time and space, but it will fill your tummy with all kinds of timey-wimey goodness.

Is a gingerbread TARDIS better than having a ginger companion like Amy Pond? Well, this ginger won’t talk back and be a smartass and it won’t get itself into trouble so that you have to save the day. But on the flip side, Amy Pond has much better legs than this ginger treat. Then again, Amy can’t fill your belly. Well, not unless the TARDIS crashes somewhere and you go all Donner Party on her. That would be horrible though. I’m still undecided which would be better.

Doctor Who: the Eternity Clock Game Coming to PS3 and PS Vita

The BBC has unveiled a short teaser trailer for the new game Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock. This news makes me nervous, since I can’t recall ever playing a good Doctor Who game. I know they have tried before, but it’s one of those properties that just never quite comes together right in game form. I’m thinking Star Trek too.

The game will arrive in early 2012 for Playstation 3, PS Vita and PC. Supermassive Games is the developer and all we really know is that the you can take on the role of Doctor and River Song as they explore the universe over multiple time periods.

I hold out some hope that this will be a great Doctor Who game, but I’m not holding my breath. However it turns out, you can be sure that it will have Daleks, a fez, several uses of the sonic screwdriver and River saying “Spoilers!” a few times.

Handmade Doctor Who Chess Set: Knight to TARDIS 4

We’ve all seen the Doctor Who chess sets that are available from online retailers. They’re cool and appropriately geeky, but they’re just too polished and slick and mass produced. This version is much better and at least it has some personality.

This handmade Doctor Who chess set from deviantART user Eldalin Skywalker is just plain adorable. It has Tardis pieces, Weeping Angels, Cybermen, Cassandra the last human, Daleks, River Song, some cute little Adipose creatures, The Face of Boe, Odd and more. Oh, and David Tennant as the Doctor. And a pair of TARDIS-shaped rooks.

The pieces are between three and seven centimeters tall. It was on sale over at etsy for $535(USD) but alas, it has already been sold. Some geek out there has a great Christmas gift this year.

TARDIS DVD Bookcase Transports You to Any Place (in Your Movie Collection)

You know me. Just slap a TARDIS on pretty much anything, and I think it’s cool. But this particular TARDIS is one of my favorite builds in a while. It’s a full-size bookcase made in the form of a TARDIS.

It was built by UK model-maker msmuse101 – with the help of her Dad – over the last few months, and it really looks great. When closed, it looks just like the iconic blue police box, but when the doors opened up, it conceals eight shelves for books – or in msmuse’s case – her DVD collection.

Unfortunately, she didn’t capture any photos during construction, nor any directions for making your own, but that’s okay. BBC Develops Daleks That Are Controlled by Doctor Who Episodes

Daleks just got even scarier. The fine folks at the BBC’s R&D division have created a system in which Daleks in front of a TV can mimic the actions of the Daleks on the screen. In other words, when the Daleks on screen move towards their target, like the Doctor for instance, so will the model in your living room.

The system is in the prototype stage right now and is called Universal Control. The way it works is that your TV or set-top box has to be Internet enabled, so that the BBC can send out synchronized Wi-Fi signals to the miniature Daleks. Their experimentation involved two-foot-tall Daleks, with information encoded into the video of a Doctor Who episode.

I’m going to assume that their intentions are good and that they just want to make neat toys. At least I hope that the Beeb isn’t planning world domination by putting Daleks in our living rooms. (Un)fortunately, the BBC says it’s not planning on releasing these to the general public anytime soon.

TARDIS Purse Lets You Carry Time and Space With You Wherever You Go

For some reason, the idea of carrying around the TARDIS with you reminds me of Men in Black. You know, that part where an entire galaxy can be carried around in the palm of your hand? That’s what I think of when I see this. I only imagine all of the worlds, time and locations the Doctor has visited through with the TARDIS, all stuffed inside this bag.

Or, maybe it’s just got your wallet, lipstick and car keys inside. Regardless, it’s pretty darned awesome. This handmade wool felt bag is a dead ringer for the Doctor’s actual TARDIS, down to the police box signage and the light on top. It was made by Moscow’s Krukru Studio, and is the best gift you could possibly buy for a female Doctor Who fan. Heck, I’m a guy, and I might consider carrying around a man purse just so I can have the TARDIS with me at all times.

The TARDIS bag measures just 13.8″ (H) x 7″ (W), but like all TARDIS, it’s bound to be way bigger on the inside than out, so hopefully it’ll hold all your stuff.

Clearly, a lot of labor goes into the construction of each one of these bags, so that’s why it costs $180 (USD), but if you’re a serious Doctor Who fan, and you appreciate handcrafted wares, I think it’s worth it. Transport yourself over to Etsy now if you want one.

TARDIS Refrigerator: Ice Box, Not Police Box

Minecraft Weeping Angels Mod Makes Creepers Like Winged Zombies

From what I gather, Minecraft is already a pretty scary game on it’s own, but this mod by Minecraft Forum member/Dr. Who fan/general cruel person a_dizzle makes being a blocky miner and crafter a lot scarier. The mod is called Weeping Angels, after the Dr. Who aliens of the same name. And yep, this mod puts the bastards in the game.

Similar to the Boo from Super Mario Bros. 3 (and subsequent games), the Weeping Angels can only move when they’re not being observed. So as long as you keep your eyes on them, you’re good. But once they do get the chance to move they’ll move. Quickly and noiselessly. Actually the mod is quite buggy, as there will be instances when the Weeping Angels will cheat and still move even if you’re looking at them. Which makes them even scarier. Thankfully you can kill them using an iron pickaxe.

Combine these with the Endermen – who go crazy in the opposite manner; i.e. they go berserk if you look at them – and Minecraft makes Resident Evil seem like a Saturday morning cartoon. Get into the Halloween spirit and download the Weeping Angels mod from the Minecraft Forum.
