These ear plugs were made by deviantART member Marcus Hermansson. For those of you interested, unfortunately he’s not interested in selling them. Maybe you can one-up him and plug actual parts from consoles into your lobes. +1 if you can fit an entire console in there.

Gregory’s bathroom is loaded with retro video game touches, with artwork from Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong and Pac-Man adorning the walls and fixtures. I especially love the Mario brick and question mark block lighting fixture above that intricately-detailed retro gaming mirror. Even the toilet seat cover has gotten the retro gaming treatment. I wonder if the Pac-Man trash can is filled with power pills, or just wadded up Kleenex. I also want to know where he got that Mario hand towel from. I love all of the graphics on the Chop Shop’s Donkey King t-shirt, including the little cherry tree near Washington and that little red axe instead of a mallet. And those are cannonballs being rolled down by Donkey King in place of oil drums. Of course, Georgio’s goal is to free Lady Liberty from the ape King’s tyranny.

The Donkey King t-shirt is available for $23(USD) over at Chop Shop, and can be printed on an upgraded (and appropriately patriotic) American Apparel t-shirt for an extra $3. While we’re still a couple of months away from Independence Day, there’s no reason not to be prepared early.

This 100% cotton quilt was made by David McFarling (aka “McFrogling“) and it features the likeness of DK himself, Jumpman (not officially known as Mario at that point), and the damsel in distress (definitely not Princess Peach.) The pixelated characters are placed into a larger-than-life setting of girders and broken ladders, just like in the arcade game.

It measures in at 60″ x 58″ and definitely would look good on a full size bed (or probably a queen too), so this isn’t just for the little kid’s room. I like how Kong id dropping a barrel nowhere near the plumber, so he hasn’t had to whip out the sledgehammer yet. On the other hand, it looks like the only ladder up is broken, so his chances of reaching his ladyfriend are pretty darned slim. Oh well, it wasn’t designed for its gameplay accuracy? Creative license and all, right?

Actually, I just made that team name up. deviantART member Casey Edwards aka basicnoir simply knows them as some of his wonderful illustrations. I would’ve pegged Beast as the obvious choice for Donkey Kong, but he does make for one mean Colossus. And who knew Diddy Kong had an uncanny resemblance to Nightcrawler?

A modder going by the name of Bender (who didn’t tell us to bite his shiny metal ass for once) created this 8.25″ tall Donkey Kong cabinet. Not only is it a perfect 1/8th scale replica of the original, it’s fully playable.

Okay, the joystick and buttons are disproportionately large, but you wouldn’t be able to play it if he made those to scale. Under the hood of this tiny marvel is a sliced and maimed GamePark GP2X Wiz, loaded with MAME. That means Bender could actually play just about any arcade game he wants on this thing too. I dare him to play Donkey Kong, Jr. on it. That’ll show ‘em!

While this isn’t an official Nintendo creation, Steve Williams of Australia’s Mass Panic Productions came up with this modern spin on the original Kong, spruced up with new and improved graphics, but preserving the basic gameplay mechanics of the 1980s classic.

Nice touch there with the breakaway ladders and curved girders. I only wish they had included Mario’s hammer to bust up some barrels. Unfortunately, this is just an animation Williams created, and not an actual playable game. Maybe someone at the Big N will see this and get inspired to make a new version of DK for the Wii or 3DS.

They’ve got five different posters available including Tron, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Joust, and Dig Dug. Of them all, my favorite is Tron. It says “De-resolution is the only solution.” Now that’s a smart and catchy slogan. And just in time for you to hang on your wall with the new Tron:Legacy coming out this December.

Created by Mick Farrow, the game plays much like the original (with some quirks), but with a shiny new coat of paint. I’m not sure how long this will stay up on the web before Nintendo makes them remove it. So if you you’re longing to get your Kong on, you should definitely head on over to Retro Remakes and grab a copy.

Donkey Kong looks okay, I guess. A big bad gorilla. Although whenever I think of this game I always remember DK’s wide grin.

Mario and Pauline are less endearing though. Mario is well-made but he looks really really angry…

You know, looking at this, the opening of Super Mario Bros., it occurs to me that I couldn’t possibly guess how many times I have played through this moment of the game. I think the motions are probably so ingrained in my fingers that I could do it with my eyes closed. But is that a testament to the game, or to the NES’s amazing gamepad?

I like the blue on the Mario bag, but it has to lose out to the controller that lives on in my heart. But whatever your tastes, from Donkey Kong to Pac-Man, you can find it in the 16-BIT Etsy shop.

Modder Goteking recently turned an old Donkey Kong Jr. Game & Watch into a tiny color TV. And while the buttons no longer work properly, it’s a whole lot more fun to watch weird Japanese game shows than to watch choppy grey LCD version of an arcade game, IMHO.

To get this hack working, Goteking gutted the old G&W, and glued a cheap $40 LCD TV to the back. Not a particularly complex operation from the looks of things.

There wasn’t any room to keep the TV’s front-mounted speakers in place, so sound is provided by a gigantic external speaker that’s about 3 times the size of the Game & Watch & TV itself. It’s all very MacGyver of him. I guess the good thing about that is that this is one of those rare mods that even I could probably replicate.

Despite my squealing over the smile on Donkey Kong’s face, however, I think that little fire is the best part. This project really reflects the qualities that keep these old games around in iconic status: simplicity and high fun factor. Of course Donkey Kong is silly; the whole concept is silly. So let’s put a happy face on ‘im.

Now I want to see giant Lego versions of the old man from The Legend of Zelda.

On the other hand, this t-shirt from Germany’s LowRez asks the question in such a way that’s just as likely to get a laugh from your stoner buddies as it is to be appreciated by gamer geeks. As a matter of fact, this t-shirt is the perfect bit of apparel for that rare breed, the pothead retro gamer. It’s just the type of shirt that somebody might wear when he gets pulled over on an Cops with a doobie behind his ear.

In addition to t-shirts, the How High Can You Get design is available on a variety of clothing items, including tank tops and hoodies over at LowRez online shop.

This intricate hand-tiled shower was created by Colombian artists Andres Barragan and Miss Vynilos (who seems to have a thing for Mario, Princess Peach and Toadstool, too). Each tile’s color and location was based on an individual pixel from a blown-up screenshot of the Nintendo arcade classic.

There’s nothing quite like taking a shower with a baby monkey. I do it all the time.

Though you might hear a few snickers when you walk down the street in this shirt, just ignore them. It’s nervous laughter due to the fact that you suddenly look so large and manly, and not at all like you have a pair of fake plastic boobs (or any other anatomical bits) bolted onto your t-shirt.

Handmade by artist Natalie Hutcheson (aka “HutchMe”), these metal buckles don imagery of famous icons of classic arcade games. While the Donkey Kong buckle is my personal favorite, Ms. Pac-Man comes in a close second.

Each buckle is crafted from sturdy brass-toned metal, inlaid with sparkly metallic game graphics. The designs are then coated with a durable industrial epoxy finish to keep them from scratching up as you lean against your favorite arcade machine as you pump in quarter after quarter.

Of course, if actual size pixels aren’t your thing, you can always pick up this giant-sized purple Space Invader, which can certainly be seen from a much greater distance.

So if you’re tired of looking un-cool with your plain old brass buckle, head on over to HutchMe’s Etsy store to get your hands on one of these for $18 a pop.

Shipping this September, Donkey Kong Jenga doesn’t monkey with the orignial Jenga block stacking and removing gameplay. But I couldn’t think of a better way to spice up those boring plain wood blocks that the regular version of the game comes with. Sure, it’s a few bucks more than standard Jenga, but put Mario and Donkey Kong on anything, and I’ll gladly pay a couple of extra bucks for it.

The drink will be called “Rockman E Can Drink” because it’s coming out in Japan and Mega Man is called Rockman over there. The drink will cost ¥137, or about $1.25 a can. No word on what it tastes like, though.

This drink brings to mind past retro video game-inspired energy drinks such as Super Mario Power-Up and Donkey Kong Jungle Juice. All of this gives me a great idea. Why doesn’t someone open up a place that has arcade games and serves arcade cocktails? The chef could dress like the chef from BurgerTime, and the waiters could dress like angry pickle slices. Great idea, no?
