Google Maps 8-Bit Comes to the NES

While we’re reasonably certain that the pranksters at Google have jumped the gun with one of their big April Fools pranks, we’re still the slightest bit hopeful that Google Maps for the Nintendo Entertainment System is a real thing. It’s almost surely not, but I still like the idea of bringing today’s software and websites to old school consoles.

According to Google, the new Google Maps for NES will ship on a cartridge, offering internet access directly from your old 8-bit console. A gigantic farm of computers in the cloud are said to transform the regular Google Maps experience into a version usable on the NES.

You gotta love the part where you blow into the cartridge “to fix bugs.” For now, you can play around with the 8-bit style Google Maps over at maps.google.com, then clicking on the “Quest” button in the upper right-hand corner, or by simply clicking this link. Dragon Quest Controller Can Only be Used by King Arthur

…at least that’s what it looks like to me. This is a concept image of the controller for the Wii port of the arcade game Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory. Clearly, an absurd title deserves an equally absurd controller.

The controller will be made by HORI and will sell for ¥12,800 (approx. $138 USD). As for the sword that’s barely a sword? Andriasang says that gamers will “push down on the sword for your special finishing sword attack.” Oh, Japan. I wouldn’t be surprised if that turns out to be the sword controller’s only purpose.

A Better Way to Slime Your Nintendo Ds

Square Enix just had a big day in Japan, with details on the new Dragon Quest X announcement for the Nintendo Wii, and more on the slightly-older (and still unreleased) Dragon Quest IX, which is slated for the DS. But I had eyes for only one thing: the most ridiculous (and awesome) Nintendo DS stand ever created.

The Dragon Quest Slime Speaker Stand is useful–it holds your DS and includes a speaker–but mostly, it’s just a giant slime, designed for the person who really loves them some Dragon Quest. Usefulness only goes so far when you’re talking about dropping ¥4725 (appx. $51 USD) on a cool accessory that makes your portable gaming system somewhat less portable.

The stand will be available from Hori, along with these clear cases designed for the new DSi.
