His next project should be even neater. He plans to do a similar project involving an actual NES, that would “transforms into a giant robot, much akin to Metroplex and/or Fortress Maximus!” Sounds pretty awesome. Why doesn’t LEGO sell more stuff like this themselves? Oh well, their loss.

Etsy contributor Dpad’s art lets you show off your love of retro games as well as your appreciation of art at the same time. He combines traditional art materials with pixel tiles made from old book covers to make his art. Unfortunately,  the Duck Hunt one has sold, but he’s got many more similar types of art in his store. The piece sold for $120, but he has other smaller works as cheap as $40 bucks.

Dpad has also got Mario and Mega Man mosaics made out of similar materials. Between the bunch, the Duck Hunt one has got more style, but I like the Mega Man and Mario ones better because I actually liked playing those games more.

The craftsmanship may not be top-notch, but they’re quite rare and funny. Of course, you have to be sure that your loved one gets the reference, otherwise you might be in for a long day. “What do you mean it took a little longer than you expected?! Did I give you a hard time?”

Based on the design of the original NES gun controller, the soapy version comes in “energy citrus” scent, and is guaranteed not to be able to shoot down any pixelated ducks on your TV. But it might shoot bubbles at the duckies in your tub. While it looks awesome on this side, the backside is flat and lacking detail – presumably because of the mold they created to cast this soap. But I won’t hold that against them. It’s still cool.

The dog measures 18″ wide by 16″ tall and is made from recycled pixels wood and a glossy coat of paint. It’s available over on pixelparty’s Etsy shop for $400 bucks, which is just slightly less than what would cost you to buy a real dog. But at least this one only poops pixels.

Pixel art is a funny thing: it’s both simple and complicated. Artist and Sprite Stitch forum poster Brit.knee reports that, in order to create these paintings, she found beadcraft images or old screenshots and blew them up so that she could count the pixels required to make each picture. After that, it’s a matter of creating a grid on the canvas and “sketching” the piece out that way.

Me, I always like the little details in work like this, and here it’s the hearts on Link’s “screen” that bring a smile to my face. I can picture that screen immediately to the right from the starting point in The Legend of Zelda, and my first encounter with the Octoroks. Good times.

Quilter byneedleandthread has been working on the quilt since last summer, apparently (it was made as a gift!), and used available sprite patterns for some of the blocks, while others–like the Zapper and the Nintendo logo–were designed just for this project.

Go figure that no actual Nintendos were harmed in the making of this system. To save on space and power consumption, modder GonzoMPM-1 used one of those cheap knock-off NOAC (Nintendo on a Chip) systems to provide the brains of the operation.

As a result of the compact design, there is no cartridge slot, so the console can only play the games that game built into the NOAC board. Fortunately, the parts came from the infamous Super Joy III console, which comes with 76 on-board games (and thousands of varients), including light gun classics Duck Hunt and Hogan’s Alley.

The whole thing runs on a set of three AAA batteries, which fit perfectly into the butt of the gun, on the opposite side from the circuit board.

And yes, the light gun LED still functions. However, you’ll need to lug around an old tube television if you want to use it, since old-fashioned light guns require a CRT.

You can purchase this sexy/nerdy item from bettydeath on Etsy for 20 bucks. She’s clearly a little quirky. For example, in the item description she busts out with the following paragraph: “If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me! I do have cats, but I keep them away from the fabrics/craft area.” Uh… non sequitur much? Still, it goes without saying that it would take an idiosyncratic lass to think up such a clever equation like: vinyl+velcro+NES zapper = must have fashion accessory.

Yes, it’s true- you can own this thing and show the world you dominate all that is zappable and holy! That sniggering hunting dog will no longer laugh at you… now YOU can laugh at HIM because you’ll look so cool. Except that your TV probably won’t even work with an old Nintendo machine, and your copy of Duck Hunt from when you were 12 is probably a little dusty. Also, he’s not real. He’s a cartoon video game dog, and a really pixelated one at that. Get over it already. I know I have, and it only took like 8 years of therapy.

Developer Deron Dantzler has created a faithful, Safari-compatible version of the Nintendo classic Duck Hunt. Instead of a light gun, the game uses your fingertip to shoot down those pesky winged critters. It takes a little trial and error to get used to the finger presses, but eventually you’ll get the hang of it.

Deron did an amazing job getting all the pieces to look just like the orignal, and unlike many attempts to make iPhone arcade games in Safari, it actually loads quickly, even on an EDGE connection. Unfortunately, there’s no sound, but maybe someday Apple will just give us the Flash support we all want and we’ll be done with all this workarounds.
