A while back, I told you guys about a pretty cool iPad 2 case which was made out of good old duct tape. At the time, the case was only a one-off, but you can now get in on the duct tape action yourself. The case’s creator, Coregeek has recently launched a Kickstarter project to get these fun and functional cases into the market for you to enjoy.

Each Duct Tape Magnetic Jacket incorporates a durable, lightweight plywood core, wrapped in ample layers of duct tape. The inside of each case is lined in felt to protect your precious tablet, and the case even self-aligns like the Smart Cover, thanks to its built-in magnets, and even auto-wakes and sleeps. It also can be propped up for easy typing or movie watching.

Unlike the original grey design, the updated iPad 2 duct tape case comes in a variety of cool designs, including such favorites as the Nintendo Game Boy, Doctor Who’s TARDIS, and my personal favorite, delicious smoky bacon (bacon scent not included.)

A pledge of $40(USD) or more will get you one of these Duct Tape Magnetic Jackets in one of serveral basic colors, while $45 buys you patterns like leopard, zebra, or digital camo. But if you really want to travel in style, drop 60 bucks and go for the Game Boy, TARDIS or bacon versions. If you’re feeling like really splurging, Coregeek says he’ll make you a custom design (within reason) for $80.

Last-Minute Costume Idea: Cut a Hole in Your Torso with Two iPad 2s

If you still don’t have a Halloween costume, you’re probably left to the dregs of the random ill-fitting Scooby Doo and Teletubbies costumes at your local Wal-Mart. But if you and a buddy can spare your iPad 2s for the night, you could end up being the life of the party.

By taking a pair of iPad 2s and strapping them to his chest and back using duct tape, Technabob reader Mark Rober managed to make it look like he had a huge gaping hole in his torso. The trick is actually pretty simple to pull off. Just connect the two devices via Wi-Fi (or a pocket hotspot), and turn on a FaceTime chat between the two.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The one in the back uses its front-facing camera to capture what’s behind you, and the one in the front grabs what’s in front. They each show the others live video on-screen, creating an awesome illusion that makes it look like you can see right through your body. While I’ve seen this idea done before, it’s always required a ton of build time and hacking. This idea only requires a couple of iPad 2s, some duct tape and a Wi-Fi network.

Of course, it’s not exactly the cheapest Halloween costume, but if you do have a couple of iPad 2s lying around, it’s actually pretty easy. And if you have a few iPhone 4s on hand, you could even create a bullet-riddled corpse effect.

[Thanks for the tip, Mark!]

No word yet if he’s selling the bag; but coregeek will be launching his own line of iPad 2 magnetic cases which are also made out of duct tape. You can check details and samples on his website.

We all know TRONguy. That geek that wears the custom made spandex TRON suit even though he has no business being in anything that tight. Well that dude has been drafted by the Duck Tape company that sells all sorts of tape products including duct tape for a new commercial. This may well be the best geek commercial ever.

The commercial is embedded below if you want to see it and skip the boring description, but for those of you who’d rather read about it, the commercial starts out with three rolls of blue Duck Tape on one side and some orange rolls on the other. The tape takes off trailing the sticky stuff behind it like the lightcycle trails in the TRON flicks.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Just before the blue rolls are about to kill the orange, a hot blonde (too good looking to be TRONguy’s wife) breaks into the scene. She yells that she told the TRONguy to clean the garage and to stop playing. The camera then shows TRONguy sitting there playing with the tape. He hops up and tosses his disc (otherwise known as a Frisbee) at her and the commercial is over.

My uncle is an actual duct tape engineer. If you go to his house, you might find his AC unit repaired with duct tape, his trucks radiator hose, and lots more is fixed with nothing but curses and duct tape. His shop chair is held together with nothing but duct tape and dried beer. I once cut my finger and he fixed that with duct tape.

The Duck Brand of duct tape has announced a new form factor for the ubiquitous tape. It now comes in 8.25″ x 10″ adhesive backed sheets. The backside of the sheets has a cover like a sticker so you can cut it to whatever size you need and then stick it down. There are many uses for duct tape and some of them that are geeky have nothing to do with what the tape was intended for. I have seen duct tape wallets and phone cases among other things. We even talked about a duct tape case for the iPad 2 a few days back. The point is geeks use duct tape for all sorts of things, so these sheets make it even easier to geek out.

You can get these new sheets in a number of colors, and some even have patterns like zebra stripes, leopard spots, tie-dye, and even a flame-job. A pack of six sheets will cost you $9.99 (USD) and individual sheets run $1.99 each.

There are certainly plenty of ways to protect your shiny new iPad 2 from scratches and dings, but wrapping one in duct tape wasn’t on my list of ways to do this. That said, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and there’s now an iPad 2 case made from the sturdy, sticky stuff.

Coregeeks’ Duct Tape Folio for the iPad 2 not only protects the tablet, it’s got hidden magnets built in to trigger the iPad 2′s wake and sleep functions like Apple’s Smart Cover. It even uses magnets to hold the tablet in place like the Smart Cover. Unlike the Smart Cover, however, the folio actually covers both front and back of the iPad 2.

The clever case also has a built-in stand, and snaps shut nicely thanks to a magnetic clasp on front.

Despite the fact that it does take a little away from Apple’s svelte industrial design, it’s still a pretty impressive case, and definitely unlike anything I’ve seen on the market so far. Coregeek doesn’t say if there’s any plan to make these for sale, but in the mean time, you can check it out in the video below:

While I think it’s really cool that someone made a duct tape/sharpie AT-AT, I find it a bit ridiculous that it’s currently being sold on eBay with a starting bid of $400. Still, it’s an AT-AT made out of duct tape, so I can’t complain too much.

This model is 4 feet tall and 5 feet long. This papercraft AT-AT is 1/20th the size of a full-sized AT-AT, the so-called Imperial Walkers from Star Wars. What’s that? Did I just see that shipping this thing will cost over $200?

Komanac used wood, cardboard, duct tape, and Sharpies to make this model. It took several rolls of tape and between 30 to 40 hours to create. It was made for an art show in Alberta, Canada.

So you’ve just spent a fat wad of cash on your fancy new iPad, but didn’t think about buying a sleeve for it? Well look no further, because this sleeve was made out of cheap, sticky duct tape, so you can make one yourself on a shoestring budget.

Frank Hsueh was exactly in that predicament. He based his iPad sleeve on a simple bubble wrap shipping envelope, which he MacGyvered together by covering it with both double-sided and duct tape.

The final touch included an Apple sticker from an iPod shuffle to give the duct tape sleeve a bit more class (assuming duct tape could have class). The resulting sleeve is pretty unusual and looks sturdy – assuming none of that evil duct tape goo ever gets on the screen of his iPad.

According to the poster of the thread, his friend was wondering why his shiny new Playstation 3 had stopped working, when he discovered the unthinkable. His buddy decided to duct tape over the vents in order to keep dust OUT of the console. Yeah, that’ll keep it nice and clean.
