When some companies say rugged you have to read the fine print to see just how rugged the device is. For instance, many rugged smartphones are only water resistant for a few minutes or can only resist a spill. Others will break if you drop them from a few feet onto concrete. Gresso has a new rugged mobile phone that is very rugged.

The Extreme X3 [RU] has an IP67 certification for water resistance. Gresso says that its Extreme X3 can be submerged in up to five meters of water for an hour before it will no longer work. That means you could go swimming with the X3 in your pocket and climb out of the pool to make calls. It’ll even float on the surface of the water for up to 30 minutes. The phone is also very resistant to damage from drops.

The phone will reportedly survive drops from 7-meters onto concrete and can deal with literally a ton of weight on it. You could drop this phone off a 10-foot ladder, drive over it your truck, and it would still work. It also works in temperatures from -50C to 60C without issues. It operates on 900/1800/1900MHz frequencies and has Bluetooth, FM tuner, and an integrated flashlight. Pricing is unknown at this time.

While LaCie isn’t new to the rugged hard drive market segment, they’re about to release a miniaturized version of their popular Neil Poulton designed hard drives, which are shock, drop and rain-resistant.

These drives look pretty good, thanks to their stylish orange rubber protective case. They are safe to drop up to 4 feet, so it’s a good bet that your data will remain intact if you’re in the habit of dropping things. They are also 1-ton pressure resistant in case you (or your pet grizzly bear) ever step or sit on your drive after you drop it.

They’re also USB 3.0 compatible, so they won’t be slow when it comes to transferring your data.

The Rugged Mini comes in 500GB ($99.99) and 1TB ($159.99) sizes. A 500 GB 7,200 RPM version will cost $119.99. They will be available soon over at LaCie.

What is it about rugged laptops that makes them so interesting? Is it the fact that you can take them on camping trips and not worry too much about scratching them? Or is it the fact that you can pretend to be on some sort of secret mission while you’re using one? Well, you won’t look too conspicuous with the latest Panasonic Toughbook C1, which will get a major upgrade in July.

The lightweight Toughbook C1 weighs about 3.28 lbs, and can easily switch between tablet and laptop modes. This convertible laptop can withstand drops from up to 30″ and the keyboard is spill-resistant. It will include a 12.1″ (1280×800) screen, available with a special touch screen that toggles between multitouch capacitive and precise stylus modes.

There’s 2 GB of RAM, upgradeable to 8 GB and a 320 GB hard drive. It comes with an Intel Core i5-2520M processor with Turbo Boost that’s supposed to be 30% faster than its predecessor. Panasonic claims you’ll be able to use it about a dozen hours in the field on a single charge.

You get all of the usual ports and connectivity features. It will also work on the 3G networks of AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. The new Toughbook C1 will be released later in July and will sell for $2,599 (USD).

I’ve got no idea why I want one, but this rugged laptop from Getac does look surprisingly good. You’ve probably seen these types of laptops in movies, used by the military or if you’re a spy. The Getac X500 was designed to be extremely durable.

The X500 has a 15.6-inch screen, an Intel i7 2.66GHz processor, and it’s quite tough. And to prove it, Getac partnered up with a company called Tough Corp to get the job done. The laptop also comes with a sunlight readable touchscreen and high power WiFi (up to 3,280 feet outdoors). It comes with a fingerprint scanner, multi-card ready, and some anti-theft features.

There’s no word on pricing, but you got to give to Getac on coming up with something ruggedly sexy. I can already see Jack Bauer having a go at this to disarm a nuclear warhead or something. I’ll bet that it can double as a bulletproof vest as well (or not).

I’ve always been extremely careful with my Nikon D200, but it’s hard to do so all of the time. That’s why there are more and more durable cameras on the market. One of the latest is the compact Ricoh PX.

The Ricoh PX is a point-and-shoot camera with a 16MP CCD sensor and a 5.0× wide angle (28mm) and telephoto (140mm) optical zoom. The 2.7-inch LCD display is anti-reflective and the camera can shoot in 720p HD (1280×720). It also supports X2-series-Eye-Fi SD memory cards, allowing for wireless photo sharing. What’s nice about the PX is that it’s rugged, and can survive a 5-foot drop and it’s shock-resistant as well as water-resistant.

The Ricoh PX will be available in three different colors, and will also offer color-tinted shells you can snap around the camera too. It should land later this month for about $300, but it’s not clear if that’s a worldwide release date since the press release appeared on Ricoh’s Australian website.

Just how well will G-Form’s new Extreme Sleeve protect your iPad from damage?

Well if you are to believe this dramatic demo video, the G-Form Extreme Sleeve, made from durable foam, can protect your delicate glass iPad from the impact of a 12 pound bowling ball dropped from 3 feet onto the face of an iPad sitting on a concrete slab.

Sonim makes all sorts of rugged phones and typically being rugged is all they are really known for. The latest offering from Sonim is rugged and has some other really cool features as well. The big feature is that the phone claims to have the world’s longest talk time on a GSM network.

The phone is made to military specs and designed to survive drops from 2 meters onto concrete and submersion in water. The phone has a 2MP camera and a professional aGPS system that can offer GPS tracking in 5-minute intervals for up to 26 hours. The phone will run JAVA apps and is made to interface with MRM software for timecard, location monitoring and other applications for field workers.

The coolest part of this phone to me is the video that shows the thing being dropped from 100 feet, which is way more than 2 meters. That is one seriously rugged handset. I wish my iPhone could survive drops from 2 feet.

Dropping a DSLR has never been an issue for me, but there are some places where those cameras just won’t cut it: you need something more rugged. That’s where Pentax’s Optio comes into play and I have to say that it looks pretty sturdy.

The Optio has got a 14MP sensor and a 5× zoom (~28-140mm). The lens is a f/3.5-5.5 and the back has a 2.7-inch LCD screen. It can shoot 720p video and ISO goes from 80 to 1600. Check this out, it’s waterproof for up to 33 feet, can be dropped from up to 5 feet, and it’s crushproof by up to 100 kg of force, meaning that you can sit on it and not break it, but a car will probably total it. It’s resistant to cold down to 14˚F.

There are some image stabilization features and an LED ring in front for improving macro shots. The WG-1 also has a WG-1GPS, which will have geo-tagging support. The non-GPS version will cost $350 (USD) and the GPS version will cost $400. That is a bit expensive, but hey, if you need a rugged camera, that’s what you have to pay for it.

The most dangerous thing about my job is being harassed by a web troll. Some folks, on the other hand, have the sort of jobs where they are out in a hostile environment alone and if they get hurt no one is around to help them. For these sorts of folks a phone like the iPhone won’t cut it, they need something like the Seals Technology VR7.

The VR7 is a very rugged GSM mobile phone that is dustproof with grade 6 certification to prevent any dust from getting inside. It’s waterproof to grade 7 making it submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. It also has integrated GPS and the cool thing about that feature is if you are in the middle of nowhere and break your leg the phone will automatically send your GPS coordinates to five numbers to get you help if you can’t talk.

The phone also supports navigation, conference calling, and has a compass built-in. The device can also access email, has a built-in flashlight, weather forecasting app, and a speaker that is extra loud for noisy environments. It also claims to be able to live through drops onto concrete from up to 2 meters high.

I have a friend that fell four feet the other day and broke his leg half off. Well, maybe not half off but enough that no one wants to hang out with him until he stops whining about it. Pentax has a new camera called the W90 that could have fallen the same four feet as my pal and never missed a beat, confirming the fact that my friend is a massive wuss.

The Optio W90 can survive those four-foot drops and is waterproof to 20-feet. You can even take pics underwater and in temperatures that are freezing. This sounds like the perfect camera to strap to the back of a penguin as he is attacked by a seal while floating on an iceberg.

The camera has a 2.7-inch LCD, 5x optical zoom, and a 12.1-megapixel sensor. It can also record 720p HD resolution video and has HDMI out for hooking to your big screen. The W90 will ship in April for $329.95.
