The amount of money that your wireless carrier wants to charge you if you go over the pathetic allotment they give you for mobile data on many plans should be illegal. If you run out of data and stream single movie, you could be looking at hundreds of dollars in extra fees for the data use. Nokia has unveiled a new product for Europe that will help save money and still let you watch TV.

The device is the Nokia Mobile TV Headset, DVB-H. As you can gather from the product name, the thing has a DVB-H TV tuner inside. That TV tuner will let you watch TV programs on the go without needing a data network or WiFi connection. That means other than the cost of the headset, the mobile viewing is free.

The rub is that the DVB-H programming is only available in certain countries. The headset can also be used for making and receiving phone calls. It should land in Europe by Q4 and sell for a price of 40 euro. That is actually not that expensive. The headset only works on compatible Nokia Symbian^3 devices along with an app on the Ovi Store.

At this week’s Leipzig Gaming Conference, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) revealed an add-on for the PlayStation 3 gaming console which will give it full television and digital video recording capabilities.

The device and software bundle, called PlayTV will provide high-definition reception of television signals and scheduled recording of shows. At this point, the PlayTV has only been announced for European markets, as its tuner relies on the over-the-air DVB-T digital standard. The PlayTV will include dual tuners, and will record programs in full 1080p resolution (although DVB-T source signals likely to be at lower resolutions.)

You’ll be able to control the program guide using either the PS3 SIXAXIS or Blu-ray remote control. PlayTV will also include the ability to watch recorded programs on your PSP via a Wi-fi connection, or download via a USB connection for later playback. The system is expected to hit shelves in much of Europe in early 2008, but there are no current plans to release the system in other parts of the world.
