Edible balloons are now a part the menu at Chicago’s high-end Alinea’s Restaurant – known for its mastery of molecular gastronomy techniques and ingredients. Each of these balloons are filled with helium, tied with a string that’s made from dehydrated apple. The restaurant’s chef, Grant Achatz, recommends that diners pop the balloon with their tongues, then suck the helium out.

I’m not sure what the balloon is made of, but it’s definitely edible. What would you sing after you’d had your serving of balloon?

Just season some ground beef and create some sheets of it. Then carve up your these sheets into sections using your own briefs as a template. Then you just tie it together with Slim Jim string.

Lastly, present it to your Valentine and prepare to get smacked upside the head. Very simple process. But don’t. Really, just don’t!

Pastry artist Barbarann Garrard (a.k.a. Cake Rhapsody) made this Brutal Legend cake for her son’s 10th birthday – it must have been some birthday party. The cake is decked out with a great sculpture of Eddie Riggs atop a pile of skulls – sweet! Amazingly, Barbaraann says she’s not a professional baker, but I certainly couldn’t tell from these pics:

Gotta love that tiny little Marshall stack! Incredibly, the 32″ tall, 70 pound cake is almost entirely edible. Just don’t eat the dowels inside she used for support, and the wires on the guitar won’t taste very good either.

Barbarann, I don’t care what they say, you’re a cake pro in my book.

The cake artists over at Seattle’s Jet City Cakes created this amazing desert that looks exactly like the original Pac-Man arcade cabinet. Every little detail is there, from the miniature red joystick, to the coin slots, to the teensy little ghosts, cherries and power pills on the playing field.

The birthday cake was made for someone who simply goes by “Dad”, so if you stole this cake (you wouldn’t steal a cake now, would you?) you could give it to your own father. Or if you’re a dad, you could keep it and chow down for yourself. Wakka-wakka-wakka.

The centerpiece of this geeky cakestravaganza is an aluminum MacBook Pro laptop, complete with a highly detailed keyboard, and LCD (that’s Lickable Candy Deliciousity) display with an on-screen message to its lucky recipient, Victoria – who apparently is a fan of the SuperFriends, too. Man that’s a big cake. Finally, we have the Borg cake. I think it’s kinda ugly but it’s a testament of geekery nonetheless, because it’s actually a wedding cake. An evil wedding cake.

This delicious Bento box was created by flickr contributor AnnaTheRed, and features completely edible versions of  Big Daddy and his faithful (and creepy) companion, Little Sister.

If you happen to read Japanese, Anna has provided a detailed diagram which gives you a virtual “paint-by-numbers” to create your own. Best I can tell, Big Daddy is comprised primarily of seaweed, sticky rice, bread, sesame seeds, and eggs. Lil Sis appears to be more of a ham (and cheese).

Unfortunately, there’s no ADAM or EVE in the recipe, so you won’t get any special genetic powers (other than the special “food coma” plasmid) from chowing down on this happy meal.

Bioshock isn’t Anna’s only video game inspired Bento lunch creation. You can check out her whimsical edible tributes to Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Portal, Katamari Damacy and Shadow of the Colossus, among others on Anna’s Flickr photostream.

Richard Thomas’ clever creation is made from sliced kiwis, bananas, oranges, strawberries, green and red grapes and blueberries.

Ironically, not a single apple found its way into the picture.

An awesome work of baked goodness, everything you see in the picture is edible other than the board that the cake sits on. I can’t get over the details on this cake. From the perfectly black and red joysticks, to the woodgrain icing on the console and the tiny Atari logo, it’s just mind-boggling.

From the looks of it, pastry chef Mendy Pound can bake cakes in just about any design you can imagine, so if you want a tasty PS3, Wii, N64, Sega Genesis, or even a Fairchild Channel F, I’m pretty sure her bakery can handle your request.

I’m guessing that the only game this 2600 could actually play would be Cakewalk.

Created by master pastry chef Mark Randazzo of Brooklyn’s Mark Joseph Cakes, this edible Artoo came complete with a domed lid and plenty of delicious blue and silver icing to satisfy any sweet tooth.

While I don’t see a matching golden C3P0 cake on Mark’s site, I bet he’d be willing to bake one for your special occasion. On the other hand, a furry Chewbacca cake might be a bit more of a tall order.
