People use laptops to run businesses, do their work, play games, watch movies, communicate with loved ones, and so on and so forth. But have you ever heard of people using their laptops in the kitchen – to actually cook a meal? And no, this doesn’t count.

Okay, so you can’t exactly bake a cake or roast a chicken with designer Dragan Trenchevski’s Electrolux Mobile Kitchen, but you can cook up a storm, chop your ingredients on the side, and grate stuff while you’re at it. Oh, and you can also use the touchscreen to flip the virtual pages of your cookbook to check if you’re doing everything right if you’re still trying out a new dish.

The whole mobile kitchen notebook is still a concept for now, although I wish they can work out the kinks (oil spattering on the screen, for one) on this one to actually turn it into a reality, because I know a lot of people (myself included) who’d kill to have one of these.

One of the 25 semi-finalists at this year’s Electrolux Design Lab competition is this radical re-imagining of the refrigerator, which if you think of it hasn’t really changed that much in recent years. We have refrigerators that are run by different power sources, but basically, what we know as refrigerators are insulated compartments with heat pumps that remove heat from inside the compartment and transfer it outside. Which is what makes Yuriy Dmitriev’s entry, the Bio Robot Refrigerator, an exciting take on the handy fridge.

Yuri’s refrigerator uses no energy because it’s basically just a large compartment filled with “bio-gel”, a “non sticky, odorless gel” that “morphs around products to create a separate pod that suspends items for easy access”. Items placed inside the refrigerator are cooled by “bio-robots” using luminescence.

As you can imagine, the refrigerator has many advantages – it uses no energy, it’s space efficient, and it can practically be any size or shape, as long as it has space for the bio-gel. So what’s the catch? Simple – it’s not backed by hard data. The fridge is dependent on this non-existing goo filled with tiny robots that cool via luminescence.

Unfortunately, Dmitriev didn’t mention if he knew of developments or experiments that could someday lead to the development of bio-gel. But I can’t help but praise the man’s imagination. You think he’ll make it to the finals? Check out the rest of the semi-finalists at Electrolux’ website.

Today’s washing machines are anything but stylish. If you ask me they look like burly, angry computers. But if Electrolux has its way, we’ll soon be able to say the words “washing machine” and “sexy” in the same sentence. Without “not” of course. The company showed off its’ SHINE concepts last month in Milan, Italy. There were two designs – one free standing and one wall-mounted. Both were designed to take up as little space as possible and look at home in porcelain-filled environments.

That’s the wall-mounted version right there, which from the looks of it has a maximum load of two boxers and a thong. Or maybe its body is supposed to be tucked inside the wall, in which case its butt will be exposed outside of your house, like an air conditioner. I don’t know.

And there’s the free-standing version, which is a lot more sensible to me. The orange light on the lid of the machines serves as the timer, while according to Electrolux Industrial Design Manager Calum Armstrong “the small display above the door has a smaller selection of programs, depending on the type of garments that need to be washed.” Uh, which small display? But we shouldn’t be so hard on Electrolux – these are just concepts after all, and as far as being sleek and modern goes these designs are successful, if (yet again) impractical.

A team of industrial designers have come up with a truly unique concept in home appliances for the Electrolux Design Lab competition, the modular refrigerator.

The NFridge reimagines the design of typical refrigerators by splitting the fridge into small, stackable compartments. Each section could be moved independently, and would provide self-contained, earth-friendly cooling using magnetic refrigeration technology. I don’t know if we’ll ever see something like get produced, but it does seem like a good idea for small spaces that might not have a dedicated kitchen space.
