I’ve seen loads of different Star Wars promos over the years, but this epic Star Wars battle is a pretty good one. To celebrate the official launch of BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic video game, EA set an army of Jedi and Sith loose on Times Square, lightsabers in hand.

This battle between good and evil was staged on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011, and involved about 100 or so people having a good old lightsaber-battle. Of course, the Jedi had blue sabers and the Sith donned red ones.

It must have been pretty awesome to witness up close, especially if you’re a Star Wars fan. Would you have wanted to be a Jedi or a Sith?

All that’s left to decide is how you’re going to fit in enough time to mess with The Old Republic while still playing Skyrim 100 hours a month.

“He who does not look back will never reach his destination.” So goes an old saying we have here. It doesn’t make sense (or at least my translation doesn’t), nevertheless it is appropriate for today’s gaming news: EA has made the classic Command & Conquer Tiberian Saga available for free download.

I think Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn have been free for some time now, and EA says the addition of Tiberian Sun and Firestorm to the list of free downloads is an early Valentine’s gift.

But with Red Alert 4 on the horizon – the game comes out on March 16 – we’d all be stupid to think that this isn’t a way to promote the aging series. Still, it’s free! Head on to Command & Conquer Classics to download the games. The Red Alert Soviet & Allied ISOs are 520 MB each, Tiberian Dawn’s GDI & NOD ISO’s are 600MB each, and the Tiberian Sun & Firestorm installer weighs in at 1.2GB.

One week–and already, someone’s made a damn cake for it. Listen, guys. The bakers are making the rest of us look incredibly lazy. We’ve got to do something about it (right after we gaze upon this wonder of confectionery goodness).

All that’s missing is a little Judas Priest blasting through the decorations on top. How awesome would this cake be if that doubled as a speaker? Then again, it’s probably edible. That may just be better.

EA’s Brütal Legend is racking up some rave reviews from the critics, but none quite so sweet as this cake, I expect.

Just look at those little yarn tentacle-grippy-crawly things pouring out of his mouth. Okay, actually, he’s still pretty creepy, but now in an adorable and harmless way. As long as he remains still, that is. And isn’t in the room when I have the lights off. But enough about my future nightmares: how’s he look next to the original?

So we’ve seen Left 4 Dead crochet, and now Dead Space. I’m just waiting for the amigurumi Resident Evil tableau.

It’s been almost a decade since American McGee’s twisted take on a Wonderland fueled by insanity, American McGee’s Alice, but Electronic Arts is teaming up with McGee’s Spicy Horse to produce a sequel to the gothic game. Why now, you ask? Why not, says I, for it’s never a bad time to give scowls and weapons to beloved characters.

Per announcements at DICE 2009 and a press release from EA, the game is set for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, though there’s no word yet on release date, gameplay information, or just how demented the sequel will be compared to the original. In fact, all that’s really been said, officially, is that the game is coming.

American McGee himself took to his blog, however, and revealed, at least, a title: The Return of American McGee’s Alice. I’m sure the game itself will be much more creative.

There’s been a lot of fuss over the years about the educational content of games, and more recently, as the definition of “gamer” expands and systems like the Nintendo DS are showing up in schools all over the world. But we don’t often hear about the educational potential of regular games. Y’know, the kind we play for fun only and not as fun-hidden-in-brain-exercise. But a recent study at the University of Oregon has revealed that playing the long-running Madden series of football games actually makes you smarter… about football.

Researchers tested Madden players and regular football fans with a series of questions about the sport, and Madden players consistently put up a higher rate of correct answers. The more you play, too, the more you know; a direct correlation was discovered between the amount of time you play Madden and the amount you know about the game of football.

When you think about it, it makes sense. Most Madden players aren’t just sitting on the sofa, watching and yelling about bad calls and following trades between teams. They’ve got to know the ins and outs of strategy and performance if they want to play to win. But it’s nice to know we can brush up on sports trivia without resorting to sitting around with a book on the subject.

The ol’ “hero/heroine is about to die, so must seize life” theme is an oft-used one in all forms of literature, and Electronic Arts’ Hachi Koi is adding its own spin to the old saw, except in this Nintendo DS game, instead of seizing life, you’re tasked with seizing girl flesh. Literally.

In Hachi Koi, the young male protagonist learns that he’s going to die in one month–unless he can fall in love and convince one of the title’s hapless, caressable ladies to return his feelings. That other infamous DS girl-touching game (Doki Doki Majo Shinpan, and its sequel) was all about witches and angels, and after that, life and death seems slightly more sane.

So how must you go about molesting romancing these girls? By touching them, of course; you can rub suntan lotion on the girls, or touch them in other ways, as directed, with the stylus and the handheld’s touchscreen.

One thing I can actually praise in this title is the variety of girls. While they all look creepily young (except for their head-sized boobs), there’s at least variety. You’ve got the tomboy, the skinny waif, and even an overweight girl. Uh… girl power? Yay?

Doki Doki Majo Shinpan’s hilarity earned that title a cult following, and it’s likely we’ll see the same for Hachi Koi. Here’s a quick video clip that, while pretty safe for work, manages to still be just a little creepy, probably thanks to the music Eric Caoili added for the YouTube video.

Unsurprisingly, Hachi Koi is currently slated for release in Japan only, but interested importers can look for it next spring.

Of all the things in the world that could possibly be used as inspiration for any sort of video game, the last thing you might expect Electronic Arts to fall back on is Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. And yet that’s exactly what the company unveiled at Monday’s Video Game Awards.

If your response is also a resounding “what?”, then just wait–it gets better. “The time is right for the world of interactive entertainment to adapt this literary masterpiece, and to re-introduce Dante to an audience that, until now, may have been unfamiliar with the remarkable details of this great work of art,” said Jonathan Knight, executive producer for Dante’s Inferno. “It’s the perfect opportunity to fuse great gameplay with great story.”

Somehow, epic poems that form a cornerstone of classic literature need “third person action adventures” to serve as their introductions. It’s not at all a bad idea, guys, but please, roll back on the hubris. Y’know. For the (uneducated) children.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

EA’s teaser trailer is certainly evocative of Dante’s hell, but I’m gonna guess, from this footage, that the game will have considerably less fainting and fewer political overtones than the source material. EA has not yet announced any consoles, release dates, or really anything other than the fact that the game exists.

According to the box are, Performance Design Product’s Rock Band Stage Kit is an “Interactive Light and Smoke Stage Show” to accompany your Rock Band jam sessions. Rumor has it that the light show is even synchronized to the music.

GameStop was quick to yank the image of the product, but the listing is still live, showing a 6/23/2008 release date and a retail price of $99.99.

Electronic Arts has started to circulate a list of 30 tracks that are currently on the playlist for their upcoming multiplayer music game Rock Band. The list includes a number of classic rock tracks, but also offers up some great alternative and more edgy tunes. There are likely to be a few more tracks announced closer to the game’s release.

-Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Maps” (Original)

I’m totally stoked that EA didn’t decide to load the game up with a bunch of crappy metal acts. Most of the songs are from the original master recordings, while just a handful are remade cover versions. Personally, I’m most excited by the presence of tunes from the likes of Radiohead, The Strokes, The Hives, The Pixies and Foo Fighters. Although I could do without the cover version of a Rush song that I already can’t stand.

Rock Band is expected to hit stores on November 20th for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A PS2 version is also planned for release in the Spring of 2008.

Electronic Arts and Criterion announced today that Burnout 5 is in development and slated for release sometime in 2007 on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

The new game will offer an expansive universe with tons of traffic to destroy. The entire game is expected to be a wide open, truly next-gen experience without the requirement to scroll through menus to find tracks and junctions to play.

Burnout 5 is a complete reinvention of the series, built from the ground up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360,” said Alex Ward, director of game design at Criterion Games. “To create truly next-generation gameplay, we needed to create a truly next-generation game, from top to bottom.

You’ll be able to freely roam between crash junctions and race games. You’ll also have a “driver’s license” which is a persistant record of your most insane driving exploits. In addition, the new crash engine will allow you to literally rip your car in half, providing for even more destruction than prior games in the franchise.

The Burnout series has always been one of my favorites out there, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with this time.
