Electronic musicians and DJs are always on the lookout for cool new ways to control their music. The Midi Fighter 3D looks like it could be nifty new music-making tool to add to your arsenal.

This compact box offers a 4×4 grid of arcade-type push-buttons, each backed with colorful RGB LEDs to provide visual feedback. But there are a ton of button controllers out there. What makes the Midi Fighter 3D special is its built-in motion sensor technology. Under the hood, it’s packing a gyroscope, accelerometer and compass, which allow musicians to use the position, angle or direction of the controller as inputs for MIDI software as well. Just plug it into your computer with the included USB cable, load up your favorite music software, and you’ll be all set.

It’s also got a set of bank-switching buttons on top, so the grid can be reconfigured on-the-fly to one of four different configurations and color schemes. In addition to the 16 buttons on top, the controller has six side-mounted buttons which can easily be pressed while you’re moving it around. They also plan on offering a hand strap, which will allow you to easily hold it in your hand without worrying about it flying out in a mad musical fit.

The MIDI Fighter 3D is being made by DJ Tech Tools, who expects to release it this April with a retail price of $249 (USD). You can reserve one now over on their website.

What do you get when you combine a taxidermied badger with a theremin? You get the Badgermin. Yes, in this world of “if it can be done, why not try it?” somebody actually has created what is likely to be the first ever electronic instrument stuffed inside a dead animal.

The Badgermin is the warped creation of electronic artist and sculptor David Cranmer, and it is exactly as weird as it sounds. The creepy-looking badger has had his guts replaced with the electronics from a PAiA Theremax theremin – which also sounds like some sort of flu medicine, but I digress.

Now that you’ve had a chance to let the image of the Badgermin etch itself permanently into your retinas, take a listen. Just make sure your cats and dogs are out of the room unless you want them to start freaking out.

Oh, my ears! It sounds like the badger has been abducted by aliens (and thoroughly probed.) At least they could have played the original Star Trek theme on it, right?

Badgers? We don’t need no steenkin’ badgers. There, somebody had to say it.

Electronic musicians and DJs, here’s something you guys will probably love. It’s a new MIDI/USB controller which looks pretty spectactular, especially when you consider the relatively low price, which starts at just 200 bucks.

The QuNeo is a multitouch controller, designed by Keith McMillen Instruments, who has been a pioneer in the electronic music world for over 30 years, so this isn’t just some fly-by-night project either. The controller is loaded with input methods, including 16 square pads, 2 rotary sensors, 9 sliders, and 17 switches. But the really cool thing is that the pads are capable of sensing velocity and position of your fingertips. The square triggers sense 127 levels of velocity, X/Y location, and pressure. Each rotary sensor can detect angle, pressure and distance from its center. The sliders support multitouch, so you can set a bottom and top range. This means that each input trigger can provide an insane amount of nuance and creative control.

Underneath the pads are 251 individual multi-color LEDs, which can provide visual feedback as you play. It’s compatible with MIDI, USB and OSC protocols, and can be used with popular music software like Ableton Live. Plus, there’s an open source SDK for the QuNeo, so you can use its sensor date to control just about anything you want – heck, you could even use it as a game or a robotics controller if you’re clever with software development.

Another cool thing is that they designed it to be the same dimensions as an iPad 2, so many iPad stands and mounts work to hold it. And while you might wonder if you could do the same thing on the screen on an iPad itself, there’s still nothing better than actual tactile feedback when playing an instrument. Just like typing on a touchscreen, playing music on one isn’t the most natural thing to do.

The QuNeo is currently raising funds over on Kickstarter to ramp up production, and has already blown through its initial $15,000 goal by over 400%. So it’s definitely being funded. A pledge of $200(USD) will get you one of the first QuNeo controllers, and $240 will get you a QuNeo along with a MIDI expander box if you need to connect it to 5-pin MIDI DIN inputs.

Musicians looking to add effects to their performances have a variety of ways they can do this – using dedicated “stomp boxes”, standalone effects processors, and even apps on their iPhone or iPad. This device will give musicians yet another way to produce effects, which integrates more naturally into their performance.

The MIDI-Moov is a new device from TangibleFX. Currently in the prototyping stages, it’s a small box you can attach to your body or musical instrument to detect motions and use them to control effects. The wireless device acts as a full MIDI controller, allowing you to attach an effect to each X, Y and Z axes of movement. So for instance, leaning forward or backwards could trigger an increase or decrease in the intensity of an effect or sound. The transmitter would then send these signals directly to a remote computer running software like Logic Pro, Cubase or Ableton Live to manipulate sounds in real time. Here’s a demo video of the current prototype in action:

Currently, the guys at TangibleFX are in the early stages of fundraising over on IndieGoGo for production of the MIDI-Moov, but haven’t really nailed down retail pricing for the gadget at this point. A $500 contribution will get you a handmade beta unit, but that seems like a whole lot of coin – especially on a musician’s budget. Still, the idea is cool, and I hope they figure out a way to get the costs down or to apply the same idea to an iOS or Android app at some point.

Electronic musicians, here’s another new gadget you might just have to add to your arsenal of music-making toys. The Maschine Mikro is a moderately priced, but professional-grade music composition tool, designed for use in the studio or in live performances.

Based on Native Instruments’ Maschine groove composer, the Mikro is its new little brother. Running the same acclaimed sequencer, effect and sampler software as its older sibling, the Maschine Mikro lets you easily access the vast majority of the software’s capabilities using the hardware controller itself. It also includes a massive 6GB sample library for you to play with, and works with both Windows 7 and Mac OS X (10.6 or greater) computers.

The compact box offers 16 backlit performance pads, each sporting velocity and after-touch sensitivity, along with a variety of smaller buttons for controlling software functions remotely over a USB connection. Here’s a couple of videos showing off the Maschine Mikro in action.

The second clip is defnitely worth watching if for nothing more than watching the prowess of the fleet fingers of Jeremy Ellis.

The best thing about the Maschine Mikro is its price. While the original model sells for $669, the Mikro will sell for $399 (USD)/349 € just including both hardware and software. It’s expected to launch on October 1, and you can find more information and demo videos here.

If you’re into making electronic sounds and like to really get under the hood of your electronics, the MeeBlip is a new synthesizer kit designed for ease of assembly and hacking.

Developed by CreateDigitalMusic and Reflex, the open-source MeeBlip comes in kit form, but since all the parts are pre-soldered onto the board, it only takes a few minutes to assemble. Once put together, you can connect it to a MIDI keyboard or other controller, and crank out bleeps, beeps and beats.

The synthesizer is digital and supports virtual analog modeling too. But it is monophonic, meaning you can only play one note at a time. While that might be a limitation for using it as a stand-alone instrument, you certainly can create some interesting sounds for use in backing tracks and basslines if you’re creative. And the guys have open sourced the entire thing, so you’re encouraged to rip it apart, make modifications, and even release your own version if you want (assuming you give credit to the original project, of course).

Here are a couple of demo clips produced with the MeeBlip:

From those sounds, if DEVO is working on a new album, they might want to pick up a few of these for the studio. If you’re interested in grabbing a MeeBlip for yourself, head on over to their website where you can order one for $129 (USD). Full specs can be found here.

The geeks over at ThinkGeek have added a new shirt to their collection of shirts that you can use to create your own band. They already have a guitar shirt and a drum shirt and now you can add this synthesizer shirt to the line to complete your 80′s T-shirt tribute band.

The new shirt is up for pre-order right now and will come in S-XXL for prices running from $29.99 to $32.98 (USD). The keyboard on the shirt can play up to five different sounds and up to eight keys can be pressed at one time.

The sound actually comes from a little amplifier that hands on your belt loop. Of course, the electronics have to be removed to wash this thing. ThinkGeek says that you will get your shirt by November 30 if you order today.

I certainly don’t remember my old Nintendo controller making crazy sounds, but I actually rather like the idea of building synthesizers into old video game controllers.

Gadget hacker Michael Rucci builds his audio mods into old electronic toys and other salvaged parts, but my personal faves are his Nintendo controller synths. He’s currently got this NES synth up on his Etsy shop.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

But from the looks of things he’s also done a version with one of those beefy NES Advantage controllers, using a pair of square-wave oscillators for sound generation.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

All of Michael’s synths make a variety of unusual analog sounds, and could be great for making electronic music, or just for having fun making noises. Unfortunately they don’t still function as game controllers, but I suppose that would get annoying when you play anyhow.

To me, yes it does. Keytar is just too silly for me, right down there with slanket and yogilates. I can roll with shoulder synthesizer though, and that’s exactly what we have today, the Lucina AX-09 by Roland. Set to debut at Musikmesse 2010 in Frankfurt, the Lucina will apparently be marketed towards children, with a lightweight design and intuitive interface. I don’t know anything about synthesizers, so I can’t say whether or not the Lucina really does have an intuitive interface.

Other features of the Lucina include the 37-note, velocity-sensitive keyboard and built-in “150 sounds that cover a wide stylistic range.” The Lucina also has an external in audio jack for playing audio from an mp3 or CD player, but if all you have are wav or mp3 files, just feed them to the device via its USB port, so you can play along with them without being tethered to a wire.

No word on the price yet, but Synthopia has got word that the Lucina will be cheap. Roland, if you want Lucina to be a hit with kids, make sure that Rock Band 3 and Guitar Hero 6 have shoulder synthesizers.

Here’s an interesting idea for a spare-time electronics project this weekend. Take a glove, a bunch of cassette tapes, the playback heads from a couple of old tape decks, an amplifier and some glue, and what do you get?

The guys at SignaltoNoiseVideo created this interactive art installation, which lets people play the music from old magnetic tapes by dragging the fingertips on a modified glove across the surface of the tape. While the sounds from this tangible interface range from ever so slightly musical to just plain strange, the concept is kind of cool.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Not to diminish the work of SignaltoNoise, if you’ve got some old cassette tapes and a recorder lying around, you probably could put one of these rigs together for yourself without too much effort. For a similar effect without as much mess, you could always try Gakken’s Wire Recorder.

The $119 (USD) gadget from Australia’s Rarebeasts can push out some really thick electronic noise loops, perfect for live electronic performances. The handheld box has three simple controls: frequency, speed and a “write” button, which lets you layer in the sounds you create into a digital loop in real time. The sounds you can make with this thing range from the kind of stuff you’d hear on an old 8-bit video game console to an otherworldly Speak-and-Spell on crack.

At first glance at this ridiculous looking thing, I thought I was looking at some sort of wooden kids’ toy. But this oddball device is actually a synthesizer.

Created by Alex Abreu & Ithai Benjamin, the Synthinetic is simply described as “The little kinetic noisy synthesizer of your dreams.” Assuming your dreams include strange squeaky, bleepy noises, I suppose.

Sit back, turn up (or down) the volume and enjoy (or not)…

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Synthinetic was designed to operate solely on the energy generated by the user and the environment around them. Turning the knobs on the sides of the box stores up energy in a capacitor, which then powers the analog audio circuits. And sticking your finger in that furry hole at the top drains the synth of its energy. I think I’ll stick with my Casio.

I still remember my first Apple computer. It was an Apple ][ with a whopping 16k of RAM and it didn't even have a floppy drive. So the sounds that come to mind when I think of my old ][ are the squeals of program data loading from cassette tape. But the later models in the Apple II line actually could make their own music too. Now, thanks to the work of a couple of enterprising chiptune musicians, there's a brand new synthesizer app that you can run on the Apple II series.

Created by M.J. Mahon and 8-bit Weapon, the Digital Music Synthesizer (D.M.S.) is the only wavetable synth for the Apple 8-bit machines that I've heard of. While it won't run on the original ][ or ][+, it works great on Apple //e, IIc, and IIc+ models.

D.M.S. can crank out up to 8 voices, which you can play from the keyboard. The app includes a variety of retro-modern sounds including acoustic piano, vibraphone, acoustic guitar, electric bass, trumpet, clarinet, square wave, sawtooth wave, sine wave, and of course, banjo!

Crank up your volume and click here to enjoy a short sample of sound from D.M.S.

You don’t even need a monitor hooked up to use this synth. Just put in the floppy, wait for it to finish loading, and start mashing on keys for some 8-bit audio delights.

Got an old Apple II lying around? You can get your hands on DMS over at 8-bit Weapon for $19.95 (USD). Naturally, it ships on a 5-1/4″ floppy. Woot!

The faderTouch 3.0 isn’t just your run-of-the-mill sequencer. Nope, the unique portable device features an innovative rear-projection system that allows not only VJ, but his audience to watch the on-screen action. By installing a bright projector inside a briefcase, and aiming it at an angular projection screen, the display can be viewed from either side.

In addition to the projector, the screen has an infrared touch panel overlay which allows him to interact with his custom performance interface which was programmed using Processing, and acts as a MIDI controller for Ableton Live. Here’s a couple of videos showing off the system in action:

And if you check out the next clip, you can see the faderTouch being used in a live performance at the recent Wham Bam Thank You NAMM show- very cool indeed.

This digital guitar runs on Linux and has a touch screen interface. How cool is that?

What is it exactly? The Misa Digital Guitar is a pressure-sensitive touchscreen MIDI controller that’s been built into a guitar body.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Misa isn’t made to replace traditional guitars, rather to create electronic music. There are 144 buttons on the neck that can be pressed with the left hand, and you can tap points on the touch screen to interact with digital music software. Since it’s a MIDI controller, it can play any instrument sounds you have stored on your computer. Cool!

No word on pricing for the Misa, but if you’re interested in buying one, you can contact them here.

Nowadays we have wristwatches that are also cellphones. Or is it a cellphone that’s worn on the wrist? Anyway back in the day “watch + something” combos became all the rage, although personally I’ve never seen any other combo aside from calculator watches here in the Philippines. They looked awesome but wearing a calculator on my watch is way too nerdy for me. The Seiko Frequency on the other hand is something that I would have wanted to have when I was a kid, just to stand out from the calculator watch-wearing student population. And also because it makes sounds.

The Frequency has a built-in speaker and contained six drum patterns created specifically for the watch by Tetsuya Komuro, one of the most successful and influential pop songwriters and producers in Japan.

The Frequency’s other features included a chronograph, an alarm, a calendar, two metronome modes (audible and visual), and a BPM counter. And it also tells the time. And it’s a drum machine!

As of this writing there are two units of the Seiko Frequency on sale on eBay, one of them priced at $350 (USD), while the other one is on auction for a couple more days but can be bought for $195. And yes, they’re both in yellow, although the Frequency also came in brown and red. Sellers, please post a video of the Frequency kicking out some beats!
