If you had to think of two toys that really stand out from the past and have left their mark on the world, these two would be the ones. The Viewmaster and the Etch-a-Sketch are true classics. Everyone knows them the instant they see them.

These papercraft toys are just like the real things, only if you aren’t careful, you will get tons of paper cuts. Also, they don’t actually work. Both of these little toys are anthropomorphic of course, making them extra cute.

They were created by Marshall Alexander, a “paper engineer” in the Netherlands, in tribute to his favorite childhood toys. I would say that he did an excellent job.

If you want to download these and make them yourself, just go here. Then once they are assembled, display them proudly.

Some might consider it cheating to attach an NES controller to an Etch-A-Sketch, but not this guy. Those little vertical and horizontal knobs just weren’t cutting it so he got to work and created the NES-S-Sketch, which is like having the worst NES paint program ever that only uses the D-pad to go up and down and side to side.

He wired up an Arduino board, connected some motors to drive the dials and attached a controller. You can watch modder alpinedelta32 use it in the video. I know, I know, you’ve seen people draw with an Etch-A-Sketch before, but when is the last time you’ve them use one with an NES controller?

What would have been really cool is if he had modded the screen of the Etch-A-Sketch to mimic and draw a game while it is being played. Yeah, hit me up when you accomplish that one. So there.

My parents were crazy when I was a kid. They would get a single toy and expect me to share it with my brother. I’m not sure why they thought we were capable of sharing considering all the fights we got into over who had something before the other. I do recall several fights breaking out over the “accidental” erasure of someone’s Etch A Sketch artwork.

What we needed were two Etch A Sketches – or perhaps this sweet Connect A Sketch concept by product design student Andrew Little. Little designed the Connect A Sketch for the 2011 Dundee Degree show and the London exhibition, New Designers. He took a couple of the Etch A Sketch tablets we all know and love, and connected them together somehow so that what is drawn on one screen shows up on the other screen as well.

The cool part is if the other guy shakes the screen to clear it, the second user will get a notification to shake their screen to keep up. I would like to know the tech the designer used to make this thing. What sort of tech do you think is behind the wonder of the Connect A Sketch?

After releasing the gorgeous Etch A Sketch iPad case, Headcase has done the inevitable and released an iPhone version. Actually they made two versions, one that fits the 3G & 3GS and one for the iPhone 4. You may notice that they look a bit more generic though:

Just like the real thing, the iPad version has the words “Magic” & “Screen” embossed in gold, in addition to the Etch A Sketch logo itself. Headcase could have added more authenticity to the iPhone versions by using the Pocket Etch A Sketch or Travel Etch A Sketch logo. If you’re going for a niche market, you might as well take whatever additional selling points you can get.

In any case, if you love the classic toy you’re most likely sold on this one. You can buy the Etch A Sketch iPhone case at Headcase for $25 (USD).

Remember that awesome Etch A Sketch Case that we talked about a few weeks ago that made your iPad look like the toy? I thought at the time what the thing needed was an app made for the iPad that would complete the illusion that the iPad is nothing more than the line art pimping toy from my youth.

That official Etch-a-Sketch app has now landed on the app store and it is just begging to be used with the case. Naturally, since the Etch A Sketch lacks real knobs for controlling the pen under the screen of the real thing, you have to draw on the screen with your finger. The app also features the ability to share images to Facebook, store them in a gallery, and even import photos to trace, so people think you’re an Etch A Sketch master.

That might not be realistic, but the shake to erase your picture feature is very realistic. A version of the app was offered on the iPhone before, but we all know blowing those apps up to use all the screen on the iPad makes the tiny iPhone version look like crap.

That’s because Headcase managed to license the Etch A Sketch design from Ohio Art before they built out their iPad case. They really nailed every detail, including the shiny red plastic frame, gold embossed logo, and white knobs. Unfortunately, the knobs don’t actually work, but they’ve also decreased their thickness to make the case a little more practical. The case also features a couple of tabs that pop out of the back so you can angle your iPad.

You can get your hands on the Etch A Sketch iPad case over at Headcase for $39 (USD). It’s ironic that you need to buy a $500 gadget and a $39 case to make it look like a $17 kids toy. Well, I guess the ability to draw curvy lines is worth the extra cost, right?

You could carry your laptop around in a boring old bag, or you could be really cool and tote it in awesomely retro style with this Etch-A-Sketch laptop carrier.

Crafter Betz White made this one for her brother Roger’s birthday, so she called it a Rog-A-Sketch. The cool carrier is made from wool felt with Velcro closures and has button knobs that really turn.

I loved my Etch-A-Sketch when I was a kid, despite the fact that I could never actually draw anything non-geometric with it. Still, I want one of these for my laptop!

Note to Betz: please make more, add a strap, and put this baby on Etsy!

Using a modified Magna Doodle as the basis for their display, the Clock-a-Doodle-Doo is the brainchild of a recent UCLA mechanical engineering class.

The clock uses a XY plotter-like mechanism to “draw” the current time by neatly arranging the magnetic particles with a mechanical pen. When it’s ready to change time, another mechanism pulls the “eraser” mechanism to release the particles and clear the magnetophoretic display. Each minute, it does the whole thing all over again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Ever wonder how a Magna Doodle really works? HowStuffWorks has deconstructed the gory innards of the mysterious magnetic device for your personal enrichment.

He’s even mocked up the interface to Adobe Photoshop using his etching skills.

Not a straight line among the bunch. I stand in awe.

Given the fact that for my entire life, I’ve been completely incapable of drawing anything but some straight lines and the occasional stair step on an Etch-A-Sketch, this image simply blew my head off.

I was already duly impressed with the detail that artist the Etch-A-Sketchist has been able to squeak out of the little red and white drawing toy. But with his decision to (momentarily) immortalize Big Daddy and Little Sister in metallic powdery form, he’s become a real superstar in my book.

And just like the city of Rapture before it, this once beautiful work of art will eventually be lost.
