The new additions include classics like the Spacewar controller and the Tennis for Two controller, which now predates the Magnavox Odyssey, which was the previously the root of all controllers in the original chart. Sony’e EyeToy and the shooting attachments to the PS Move are also here and so is the Wii U, although for some reason it has no ties to the rest of the tree. Still not included? The PC gamer’s trusty weapons, the humble mouse and keyboard. The Steel Battalion mega cockpit also deserves a place in this otherwise awesome chart.

Behold! The Magna Arbor Vitae Deku. It’s Latin for “Beautifully Drawn Huge Ass Print. Deku.” I kid. It means The Great Deku Tree of Life. As you can see, ol’ Deku Tree’s branches are quite organized. Even though each branch is not explicitly labeled, there are various phyla, which branch out into orders and then genera and then species. El Juderino then gave each organism its own binomial Latin name, a laudable feat in itself.

His Judeness said that he’ll be selling 15 copies of Magna Arbor Vitae Deku at the SUPER iam8bit art show in Los Angeles, but seeing as the show already kicked off yesterday I wouldn’t be surprised if he already sold them all. But don’t worry, Juder will release posters of the print after the show ends. Check out The Jude’s website for magna-sized pictures. I suggest you alternate between the tree itself and the names to discover gems like Vulpes keaton, Testudosaxeus tricollum and good ol’ creature number 167.

Actually this poster isn’t an original idea; the artists who made this were inspired by this online chart, which could very well be the first attempt at making an evolutionary tree of controllers. The chart tracks 82 controllers under 9 classifications – analog knob, joystick, number pad, analog stick, control pad, pad, motion capture, gun, instrument. Which begs the question – where’s the keyboard?

As you can see, the chart claims that the Adam of all controllers is the Magnavox Odyssey, a claim that I can’t dispute because I don’t really know what the right answer is. But if you’re willing to accept this Darwinian account of our much-loved devices, then rejoice, because you can get this poster now from Pop Chart Labs for a mere $30 (USD). It’s actual size is 24″ x 36″, with each copy numbered and signed by the artists who made it. It’s printed in “rich indigo ink” using “100 lb archival recycled stock certified by The Forest Stewardship Council”. I don’t know what that last one meant but it sure sounded fancy. Artist/Designer/Illustrator Kyle Bean recently created Mobile Evolution, an intricate set of nesting models from cardboard. See how each phone fits neatly inside it’s older, larger sibling?

Designs start with the classic late 1980s Motorola DynaTAC “brick” phone and take us all the way up to the Apple iPhone (though I’m not sure if that’s the 3GS there). See if you can name all the phones without cheating.

Depicting the gradual metamophosis from ape to human to arcade addict, this shirt doesn’t take into account the gradual decline from the upright position of Homo Erectus in the arcade to today’s Homo Potatus parked on the couch in front of the Xbox 360.

Regardless of its lack of anthropological accuracy, the shirt makes for a nice retro-chic fashion statement, right down to the familiar bitmapped “INSERT COIN” type. The Evolution of Man T-shirt is available from GameAsylum for $19.88.
