Here’s one for the guys… She was Playboy’s Cyber Girl of the Year in 2008, though I would give her the title in any year. Now Jo Garcia takes a look at the Evolution of Gaming in this sexy video, which is really the Evolution of Drooling, since your senses will be on overload and you won’t know what to drool over more. The games or the girl.

After watching this video I can only say that my jaw is still on the floor and that I would love, LOVE it if she and I could play video games together. She certainly knows how to work a joystick. And a Nintendo Power Glove. And old Atari paddles. And…

You aren’t even reading this anymore are you? You are watching the video which shows off classics like Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt and many others. There’s even a Gamecube controller rumbling along her backside. Can’t say I blame it.

If you bought the video game controller evolutionary tree that Pop Chart Lab released last February, know that your reference is now obsolete, because the artsy charts specialists have come back from their virtual archeological voyages and have updated the chart. It now features 119 controllers grouped into 7 categories, compared to the 82 controllers and 9 categories in the first edition. The tree has added both old and new species and is now in color.

The new additions include classics like the Spacewar controller and the Tennis for Two controller, which now predates the Magnavox Odyssey, which was the previously the root of all controllers in the original chart. Sony’e EyeToy and the shooting attachments to the PS Move are also here and so is the Wii U, although for some reason it has no ties to the rest of the tree. Still not included? The PC gamer’s trusty weapons, the humble mouse and keyboard. The Steel Battalion mega cockpit also deserves a place in this otherwise awesome chart.

With 15 games and a handful of spin-offs – and undoubtedly more to come – the Zelda universe has acquired its share of fictional plants, animals and floating eyeball things. Lots of them, as shown in this piece by Jude Buffum. He compiled “200 of the most important species” in the series, including chickens.

Behold! The Magna Arbor Vitae Deku. It’s Latin for “Beautifully Drawn Huge Ass Print. Deku.” I kid. It means The Great Deku Tree of Life. As you can see, ol’ Deku Tree’s branches are quite organized. Even though each branch is not explicitly labeled, there are various phyla, which branch out into orders and then genera and then species. El Juderino then gave each organism its own binomial Latin name, a laudable feat in itself.

His Judeness said that he’ll be selling 15 copies of Magna Arbor Vitae Deku at the SUPER iam8bit art show in Los Angeles, but seeing as the show already kicked off yesterday I wouldn’t be surprised if he already sold them all. But don’t worry, Juder will release posters of the print after the show ends. Check out The Jude’s website for magna-sized pictures. I suggest you alternate between the tree itself and the names to discover gems like Vulpes keaton, Testudosaxeus tricollum and good ol’ creature number 167.

Actually, with today’s touchscreen craze I think we’ve come full circle – man started out using only our bare hands, and now we’re using our bare fingers. Or sausages.

We’ve seen video game controllers cataloged periodic table-style, but I always thought an evolutionary tree would be more appropriate, especially since most controllers are just derivatives of a few classic designs. Finally, someone has come up with such a chart:

Actually this poster isn’t an original idea; the artists who made this were inspired by this online chart, which could very well be the first attempt at making an evolutionary tree of controllers. The chart tracks 82 controllers under 9 classifications – analog knob, joystick, number pad, analog stick, control pad, pad, motion capture, gun, instrument. Which begs the question – where’s the keyboard?

As you can see, the chart claims that the Adam of all controllers is the Magnavox Odyssey, a claim that I can’t dispute because I don’t really know what the right answer is. But if you’re willing to accept this Darwinian account of our much-loved devices, then rejoice, because you can get this poster now from Pop Chart Labs for a mere $30 (USD). It’s actual size is 24″ x 36″, with each copy numbered and signed by the artists who made it. It’s printed in “rich indigo ink” using “100 lb archival recycled stock certified by The Forest Stewardship Council”. I don’t know what that last one meant but it sure sounded fancy. Cheapskates like me can view the high-res picture of the poster here.

Artist/Designer/Illustrator Kyle Bean recently created Mobile Evolution, an intricate set of nesting models from cardboard. See how each phone fits neatly inside it’s older, larger sibling?

Designs start with the classic late 1980s Motorola DynaTAC “brick” phone and take us all the way up to the Apple iPhone (though I’m not sure if that’s the 3GS there). See if you can name all the phones without cheating.

Be sure to check out the video clip over on Kyle’s portfolio page to see how they all fit together.

And if you happen to be in the UK, you can see Mobile Evolution in person for the next couple of weeks over at the YCN Building at 72 Rivington Street in London.

If you think that mankind continues to evolve, perhaps you’re wrong. According to this clever video game T-shirt, we all stopped evolving somewhere back in the mid-1980s, parked in front of a Missile Command cabinet.

Depicting the gradual metamophosis from ape to human to arcade addict, this shirt doesn’t take into account the gradual decline from the upright position of Homo Erectus in the arcade to today’s Homo Potatus parked on the couch in front of the Xbox 360.

Regardless of its lack of anthropological accuracy, the shirt makes for a nice retro-chic fashion statement, right down to the familiar bitmapped “INSERT COIN” type. The Evolution of Man T-shirt is available from GameAsylum for $19.88.
