It’s one thing to stick an LED in a prosthetic eye, but to place it in a contact lens and then place the lens in your still working eye? Gross. Also not as impressive. But YouTuber/tinkerer/proto-Adam Jensen Ben Krasnow did it nonetheless. For science!

In case you’re having trouble seeing it, the LED is right in the middle of his eye. So what compelled Krasnow to do such a thing? Not that a man needs a reason to stick electronics into his vital organs, but Krasnow was inspired by a very similar project. A group of researchers (isn’t it always a group of researchers? I have no doubt the news announcing the apocalypse and/or the singularity will start with “A group of researchers…”) were able to construct a wirelessly powered, single pixel display mounted on a contact lens and placed their device on a rabbit’s eye. But Krasnow is no puny researcher.

I can’t even put an ordinary contact lens on my eye, so I’ll just tape some Christmas lights on my glasses and use my imagination.

Take a look at the pair of glasses below. They look like your ordinary pair of contemporary sunglasses, no? Well take a closer look. Wait a second, those aren’t lenses at all. They’re sticky notes.

I’m doing my best to not call them Post-Its, as I know 3M’s itchy-trigger lawyers will send me a nasty note if I dare refer to them as Post-Its. So I’ll just call them Whats-Its. Or sticky notes. Let’s go with sticky notes. Now why would you want eyeglasses with sticky notes on them, you might ask? Well, here’s why…

See, you can make funny faces with them – turning your face into sort of a real-life Nintendo Mii. The possibilities are endless. Well actually, they’re pretty limited, but they’re still pretty awesome.

I spotted these Memo Eyes eyeglass note pads over at Funshop, so good luck finding them outside of Korea. But even if you could, it’s not like you could see out of them anyhow, and I’m certain they’re not covered by your company’s optical insurance.

For obvious reasons, parents have always taught their kids that what matters is on the inside, and not on the outside. They tell us to accept what we were born with, that we’re all beautiful regardless of size or shape or color. And yet, still for the same obvious reasons, there are a number who are unsatisfied with what they were born with or how they look.

I understand how some people would want cosmetic surgery performed to reduce their waistlines or to make their noses pointier or to lift up their sagging skin (although I’m not for it at all.) I also understand that some people want to change their eye color sometimes and use contact lenses to do so.

What I don’t really get is how far some people will go to make such physical changes – like undergoing a laser procedure to permanently change their eye color from brown to blue.

The technology is developed by Dr. Gregg Homer from the Stroma Medical in California, and he calls it the Lumineyes technology. The procedure makes use of lasers that remove the brown pigment called melanin from the top layer of the iris. The color then slowly turns to blue over the course of a couple of weeks, as you can see above. And this change won’t come cheap, as it’s going to be priced at $5,000, although you might have to wait for a couple of years to get the procedure done if you’re interested.

Dr. Homer explains: “A blue eye is not opaque, you can see deeply into it, while a brown eye is very opaque. I think there is something very meaningful about this idea of having open windows to the soul.”

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather stick with my brown eyes. (Destiny’s Child wrote a song about brown eyes once, and I don’t think having an opaque eye color is that bad.)

I carry a small bottle of Eye-Mo in my handbag wherever I go, just in case my eyes begin to feel dry while I’m out at work or doing errands. I once ran out of Eye Mo and literally pinched myself so hard, just so I could cry some tears and bring back some moisture into them. (Sounds pathetic, I know.)

That’s why I think these J!INS Moisture Glasses are a godsend.

They’re especially useful to people (like you and me, probably) who spend loads of hours in front of the computer. These J!NS glasses will not only give you a brighter appearance because of their shocking pink color, but it will freshen up your eyes and keep them moisturized because of the special moisture reservoir attachment near the left lens.

Just fill up the reservoir with your eye drops or with purified water, snap it back into the slot, and forget about having dry eyes for the next two hours or so.

The J!NS Moisture Glasses should be available in Japan by the end of October for ¥3,990 (~$50.)

Our interactions with gadgets continue to get more and more natural and instinctive. Yesterday at CeBit 2011 Tobii showed off a very promising technology. The Swedish company collaborated with Lenovo to create the world’s first eye-controlled laptop. The laptop has a sensor bar below its display that tracks the user’s eyes. Once calibrated, it lets the user perform a variety of additional functions using their eyes, such as switching between open application windows or firing up a quick access taskbar.

Other useful features of the technology include notifications that pop up right on the spot where you’re looking at. Engadget also mentioned an eye-controlled game demo, although sadly they didn’t capture it in the demo video below.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I like how Tobii is smart enough to realize that their technology isn’t meant to replace the keyboard or the mouse, rather it can serve as a complimentary way of controlling a device. Imagine playing a video game where the camera follows the movement of your eyes, or allows you to reload, access the menu or pause the game when you look off screen or at a corner. Or displays that only turn on when you’re looking at them. Or computers that can be controlled even when you’re a bit far away – the boss is coming! hide facebook! Just being able to switch windows or tabs using only your eyes makes it much faster to work on a computer. Man, the future is AWESOME.

Martin Jones lost his eyesight about 10 years ago, when “a white hot tub of aluminum exploded in his face” while we was working at a scrapyard. Doctors had to remove his left eye, while his right eye was rendered useless because of the damage. Jones married his wife four years ago while still without eyesight. But thanks to the Sussex Eye Clinic in Brighton, Jones finally got to see his wife and scored a wicked looking right eye in the process. How? By having part of his front tooth implanted in his right eye. Go Technology go!

As you can see, Jones’ tooth serves as as a support for the lens that was created out of a patch of his skin. What’s even more amazing (for me at least) is that the procedure, developed by surgeon Christopher Liu, has actually been performed about 50 times! So Jones isn’t the only guy with the Sauron-like eye. Check out Daily Mail‘s report for more details.

Our eyes are one of our most distinguishing features; change them even just a bit and the consequences are sure to be dramatic. Put a green mask over Dick Grayson’s eyes and suddenly people won’t recognize him, all they see is this young and athletic sidekick doomed to wear a costume whose color scheme seems to be inspired by traffic lights. So! Modify your eyes and you modify your very fate. With that in mind (not really) the inventors of Olympus invented the μ9000, a digital camera seemingly targeted towards casual users who usually find themselves taking pictures of ugly people.

Aside from the usual digi-cam features, the μ9000 also has a “beauty mode” that packs several face-enhancing post-capture edits, like red-eye removal, and the option to enlarge a person’s eyes and add shine to them. I am not making this up. I wish I was.

The feature called “Shiny Eye” is self-explanatory, while “Dramatic Eye” bumps up the height of a person’s eyes by 10%. Yet another proof that the ancient mathematical expression Japanese = weird is correct.

But honestly, do you see any difference between the eyes in the image above? There’s barely any right? And how do we know that those eyes belong to the same person? So I challenged the geeks of Olympus (not really). I sent them a picture of this earthworm and asked them to give it the Dramatic Eye treatment:

Here’s the result:

My god. That’s horrible. This camera is awesome. You can buy the μ9000 at Rakuten for ¥37,600 ($384 USD).

Here’s a fun way to keep track of time. Designer Mike Mak’s Eyeclock tells time with a pair of slowly rotating disks that look like cartoon eyeballs.

The position of the left eyeball signifies hours, while the right one is minutes. Depending on the time of day, the eyes might be looking up (like at high noon), down (6:30), right (9:45) or left (3:15). The wackiest times of day are probably 3:45 and 6:00, although 3:50 is a pretty goofy time too:

The only thing missing from the clock is a couple of bubble-shaped plastic domes over each of the eyeballs. Speaking of googly eyes, I think this clock would be perfect for this guy…

This ridiculous looking (and badly named) “Third Eye” video camera attaches to your forehead using a stretchy elastic headband, and lets you capture images and videos hands-free.

With a $299.95 (USD) price tag it’s just a wee bit ridiculous for a camera that can only shoot videos at lousy 320 x 240 resolution (I think my wristwatch can capture higher res video these days). But I can assure you that the looks you’ll draw walking around with one of these strapped to your head will be priceless.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve set my eyeglasses down somewhere really obvious. But, like Mr. Magoo, I completely misplace them anyhow. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure if I kept my glasses in this awesome Blinky ghost eyeglass case, I’d never lose track of them again.

Handmade by New York crafter (and according to her profile – future librarian, lazy artist, and aspiring pro bowler) badclipart, this Pac-Man ghost glasses case is the perfect way to keep tabs on your spectacles. Thanks to a bit of clever needlepoint work, Blinky looks just like he did when he first made his way into that fateful maze back in 1980.

Now I just absolutely had to get my grubby little mitts on this for myself, so it’s already too late if you want the original one featured above. Definitely swing by badclipart’s Etsy shop and hopefully she’ll whip up another one just for you.

The piece, entitled I, ball used a webcam along with special processing software to detect people as they pass the display window. A series of digitized eyeball movements then follow the those who approach the window. The installation was on display at the recent Exposed @ VillaNuts show in Den Haag, Netherlands.
