Technabob reader Carter Grey was reading about those fancy Hard Graft iPad cases I mentioned a few days ago and pointed out some more reasonably priced and stylish fabric cases (which she happens to make herself). Her iSnugg cases are handmade and look quite cool.

Carter makes all sorts of different cases for smartphones, tablets, and other iDevices. The materials she makes her cases from include wool recycled from PET bottles and vegan leather.

Her cell phone wallets are also quite nice-looking. They make the perfect accessory for your phone, while providing a convenient spot for a couple of credit cards and cash.

You can buy her iPad and tablet cases here for $28 (USD) and the cell phone wallets here for $14.99. Since she makes them all by hand, if you let her know the exact device you’re buying it for, she’ll be sure that it’ll fit nice and snug(g).

[Thanks, Carter!]

I missed this cool display when it first turned up back in Japan in 2009, but it’s cool enough that I thought it was worth a mention regardless. Basically, what you’re looking at here is a unique sign that creates words using perfect beads of water.

The sign was built using an extremely water-repellent material called Monat from Japan’s Unitika. The fabric predictably beads water off its surface, resulting in a dramatic display of droplets coursing down its face. It’s best explained by watching this video the guys at DigInfo.TV shot:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The word “SENSEWARE” at the top of the display is formed using tiny beads of water which are secreted through pinholes in the fabric. When the beads reach just the right size, the droplets slide down the face of the slightly tilted fabric, then recirculates back to the top, and starting the show all over again. It’s pretty spectacular, especially when you realize that this entire show is basically done using a sheet of fabric, a water pump and some tubing to circulate the water.

[Thanks for the tip, Christopher!]

Minneapolis artist Charlie Bucket (not the kid from Willy Wonka) knit himself a dress. But this thing isn’t just any old garment. The dress is made from 600 feet of knitted plastic tubing, filled with luminescent fluid.

The whole dress is then connected to a pumping backpack which precisely times the movement of the fluids – resulting in an amazing lightshow. But enough of my yakkin’. Watch, and be mesmerized…

Actually, no. It actually has to be cool. Here’s a little something for you gamer grlz out there who have a fond place in your hearts for your old Nintendo Game Boy.

Textile crafter Amber over at Sew-Oeno is seen here modeling her latest creation, the Nintendo Game Boy tube dress. It’s made out of a gray knit fabric and embellished with the familiar red and black buttons and grey screen of the classic 8-bit handheld.

While it’s not as functional as say, the actual working Game Boy costume, it is pretty cool for someone who can actually fit into a tube dress. And while you’ll probably wear this thing with black tights underneath, you could always wear a pair Space Invaders tights with them if you feel really confident.

The medium-sized Game Boy tube dress can be found over at Sew-Oeno’s Etsy shop for $60 (USD). She’ll also quote you for one in your size if you drop her a note.

Here’s a way to truly feel the earth move under your feet. These robotic blocks are designed to automatically detect where you’re walking and constantly position themselves in front of your feet so you never fall to the ground.

Robot Tiles were created by Hiroo Iwata, a professor working in the VR lab at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. Each robotic vehicle is covered with a layer of Kuralon EC, a touch-sensitive conductive fabric that detects where pressure has been applied by the walker’s feet, predicting where they will take their next step. A set of ultrasonic sensors relay the position and orientation of each tile back to a central computer that tells them where to go next. Here’s a video clip showing off the Robot Tiles in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

See – it’s sort of like an infinite walking surface. While you have to walk really slowly for the tiles to have enough time to get into position, I didn’t ever see the pedestrian wipe out and fall on the floor, so they are doing what they’re supposed to do.

While I can’t think of too many real-world uses for this technology, Iwata points out that they could be perfect for providing a realistic walking surface within virtual reality applications, which could be kind of cool. But until they can speed these up, I’m keeping my feet on the ground.

Now she’s creating stuff based on Super Mario games, like a Baby Mario baby blanket or a Shooting Star baby blanket. But punzie also accepts custom orders; one of her larger orders was for a complete set of Super Mario-themed pillows and blanket.

Let’s see what we have here: a Raccoon Mario Queen-sized bedspread, 2 pillow shams with Mario and 1up shrooms, a goomba throw pillow, and a boo throw pillow. And no Princess Peach. Sorry Mario.

None of these items are on punzie’s regular product list – punzie herself is jealous of the customer and says, ” I might have to make myself a set” – but I guess you can always ask her to make the same stuff for you in exchange for some gold coins.

While the daytime is warm and summery around these parts, it doesn’t stop me from catching the occasional chill at bedtime. So what better way to keep warm but with a Space Invaders quilt?

Emily from Carolina Patchworks is at it again with another one of her pixel-y good video game quilts, this time with those pesky monochrome 8-bit invaders coming in for a landing.

The Space Invaders throw measures in at 48 x 67 inches, making it just big enough to keep your kneecaps cozy and warm while you sit on the couch playing one of your newfangled “next-gen” video games.

Each throw is custom made to order, and retails for $250. You can get your hands on this – or one of her other cool game quilts – over on Etsy. Got a special request for a video game quilt? Just drop her a note, and she’ll get you a quote.

Dunh-Dunh, Dunh-Dunh, Dun-Dun, Dun-Dun, Du-Du-Du-Du. Those pesky Space Invaders are coming to your town to help you party down. Or at least they’re ready to help you keep warm on a windy day with this spiffy Invaders-themed hoodie.

These cotton knitwear zippered hoodies feature tons of little green Invaders all over the surface. You’ll have to shoot through hundreds, maybe thousands of the 8-bit aliens in order to clear this level and move on to the next.

Available from eBay’s Thrifty Beatnik UK shop, the Invaders Hoodie will set you back £29.99 (appx. $59 USD) – or about 236 quarters that you could be using to play the arcade classic instead.

Be warned that the product page is overloaded with tons of late-1990′s web page crap that might make your browser (or you) fall into a grand mal seizure, so fair warning before you click through.

Speaking about Space Invaders…

I was buzzing about over on the wonderful world of Etsy today, when I came across these absolutely awesome plush versions of popular portable electronic gadgets. French textile artist Kmila Rodz handcrafts these super special soft systems using felt, needle and thread, with a just a dash of love thrown in.

From the wonderfully whimsical folding Nintendo DS Lite (complete with stuffed stylus and a game of New Super Mario Bros. on the dual screens), to her squishy iPhone clone, I can’t decide which one I like the best. (I’m not sure what that plush Sushi roll is doing there, but it looks tasty alongside the iPhone).

Feeling retro? Kmila has also created this beautiful Nintendo Gameboy, playing a game of Tetris on its faux “LCD” screen. (There’s even a little Tetris “cartridge” sticking out of the back when you flip it over).

Want to get your grubby little hands on these wondrous plush playthings? You’d better head on over to Kmila’s Etsy shop before they’re all gone.

This retro arcade quilt makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The throw features the pixel-y likenesses of Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and all of their ghostly pals (along with some delicious 8-bit cherries).

Posted by s0choice over on the Craftster forums, the handmade quilt is one of my favorites in a long time. While she didn’t have the patience make each pixel out of individual fabric squares, the four month project is still an impressive feat of retro-gaming art.

Does Ms. Pac-Man have a beauty mark? For some reason, I never noticed that until now. I guess I was distracted by her luscious lips and sexy hair bow.

Can I have one of these on my bed? Please?

Video games and quilting sound like they should mix about as well as oil and water, but lately, they seem more like the delicious blend of chocolate and peanut butter. First we had the Q*Bert quilt, followed by the Galaga quilt and more recently the Legend of Zelda quilt. The latest mash-up between games and sewing features a fun Super Mario theme.

Designed and sewn by a Crafster contributor going by the brilliant screen name “iddosteveperry”, the quilt features pixelated icons from the 8-bit Nintendo series. Each of the game characters’ bitmaps was painstakingly assembled from 1.5-inch squares, then combined into this enormous 8′ x 8′ quilt.

While it doesn’t feature the likeness of Donkey Kong, it is big enough that he could be sleeping underneath.

I think it would look really good alongside the soft Xbox 360, NES and Guitar Hero controller.

Surprisingly, the pillowy PC has a big smile on its face, even though it’s running Windows Vista

Handcrafted by New Hampshire fabric artist Rapunzel’s Tower (aka “Punzie”), the pillows are pieced and stitched to give them the look of individual pixels from the classic ghosts of gaming past.

Unfortunately, this particular set of pillows (priced at $90) is already reserved for a special order, but you can surely order a custom set for yourself if you contact Punzie over on her Etsy page.
Developed by computer graphics researchers Volker Scholz and Marcus Magnor, the texture replacement technology uses a complex algorithm which encodes the coordinates of textures in a sampled video sequence, then replaces them with a new texture map, complete with shadows and all the fabric folds.

Designed for use in movie and video post-production, it’s only a matter of time before we start to see directors changing out costume designs long after the film is in the can.

Were Bioshock and Halo 3 a little too intense for your delicate sensibilities? Are games like Barbie’s Horse Adventure more your pace? Then have I got a video game console for you!

An artist going by the excellent screen name Kickass-Peanut created this soft, plush Xbox 360 console, which is certain to be unable to play those evil “M”-rated games. She even created a matching controller and memory stick for the soft, smiling system.

As an added bonus, the plush console is incapable of overheating and is guaranteed to never get a case of the dreaded Red Rings of Death. And even if the console was able to freeze, you could throw it at the wall without risk of injury.
