Developers Fatshark and Paradox just released a trailer for the upcoming game War of the Roses. I was sold on this game as soon as I saw the guy getting stabbed in the eye. The game is currently being developed and it is like a first person shooter that is also historical.

While the title might make you think of a 1980s movie, this game takes place in the civil war era of 15th century England, which is known as the War of the Roses. It’s a war between the two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet: House of Lancaster and the House of York.

War of the Roses should be available for the PC later this year. I think it looks promising if you like the medieval era and first-person shooters and I do. So far the graphics look pretty gorgeous too. Hopefully the gameplay is great as well.

Yesterday we saw a fan made 2D fighter featuring Pokémon. Here’s something that everypony can get behind: another fan-made 2D fighter, this time featuring the characters from the cartoon My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Appropriately named My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic, the game is being made by indie developer Mane6. Gameplay-wise, Fighting is Magic seems similar to the Marvel vs. Capcom series. The ponies have four basic attacks – Light, Medium, Hard and of course Magic. As you’ll see in the gameplay footage below, there are also launchers, aerial combos and high-powered special attacks.

The game is currently in pre-alpha, but have patience. The folks at Mane6 promise that a version of the game will be released soon, featuring lead characters Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Applejack and Pinkie Pie, with more characters coming. Fighting is Magic will also have online play, a “lengthy” story mode with boss fights and will be totally free. No “pre-order now to get the Nightmare Moon exclusive” gimmick.

Last year, Nintendo and Japanese developer Tecmo Koei threw Pokémon fans a curveball when they announced that the popular series will have a crossover tactical RPG for the Nintendo DS. It’s not such a bad or radical idea if you think about it, but if Pokémon is going to evolve into another type of game, this project by a dedicated fan makes much more sense. It’s called Type Wild, and it’s a 2D fighter.

I’m not a Pokémon addict but I think it’s fair to say that this is something that fans of the series will pay to play. The main Pokémon games mostly feature static battle animations, so to have the monsters’ moves fully animated is an enticing proposition. Type Wild has nine fighters with movesets similar to Street Fighter characters. Here’s a demo video uploaded by YouTuber BlameTruth:

I have no idea why an official version of this game doesn’t exist. <del>Unfortunately it seems as if development on Type Wild has stopped; if I understood the developer’s FAQ correctly the last update came in 2009</del>. Commenter pandafrag summoned another page of the Type Wild website and it’s super effective – it seems that the game is still being updated. This download link still leads to the latest version. Like most PC games, Type Wild only works with Windows. Maybe someone can come up with a Digimon brawler for OS X.

If you are rich enough to afford your own battling robots, these Bionic Bopper Cars will be your next purchase. You and a friend can battle with these motorized robots. They allow you to stand inside the protective cage and throw punches like a large game of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.

When you connect, the robot’s head flips back. Bumper cars and robots! Why didn’t I think about that? They can hold drivers up to 300 pounds and they have some power since they are powered by Honda gas engines that will give you a max speed of 3 mph.

The controls are in the cockpit. You get some buttons on two joysticks that activate the arms to land all of those punches. They are good for up to 5 hours of fighting and driving thanks to rechargeable 12-volt batteries built-in. If you have a spare $17,000(USD) you can buy them from Hammacher Schlemmer.

As far as old school fighting games go, you can’t do much better than Street Fighter II. Well, we have some good news for iPhone users who love that classic game. Capcom Mobile has released both Final Fight and the Street Fighter II Collection for iDevices.

Final Fight looks like a pretty standard port of the original SNES game. It’s cool and all, but forget that one. We are really excited about the Street Fighter II collection. It gives you Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II: Championship Edition, and Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting. What more do you need? (Except buttons, maybe?)

Both games feature Bluetooth multiplayer and virtual controls. They are available right now on the iTunes App Store. Final Fight is just $0.99 (USD) and Street Fighter II will cost you $3.99. You can’t get this much fun for $4 anywhere else.

Into fighting games, but don’t think the PS3′s DualShock controller is right for dealing out the ultimate beat-down? Don’t want to have a giant arcade stick on your lap either? Then you might want to check out this controller, optimized for fighting games, but that still fits in the palm of your hand.

Hori’s Fighting Commander 3 Pro controller for the PlayStation 3 starts out looking like just another retro gamepad, but this special controller has a few tricks up its sleeves. For starters, it does away with the DualShock’s analog sticks, making way for just a D-Pad, six oversize buttons and shoulder controls.

The D-Pad offers an adjustable angle from 0° to 20°, and you can also adjust how sensitive the diagonal inputs are on the D-Pad, choosing from three levels of sensitivity. You can also flip-flop the left and right shoulder buttons if you so desire. The controller also offers an asymmetrical left-hand grip, which is said to give you better stability. In addition, the controller offers adjustable turbo modes, but you’d never use those, would you?

You can grab the Fighting Commander 3 Pro controller for the PS3 over at Amazon for about $35 (USD). No word on an Xbox 360 version at this time.

I am a big fan of the UFC and I have been looking forward to seeing Rampage beat the bejeebers out of Rashad Evans since the two coached the Ultimate Fighter. Rampage had to put the fight off to be in the new A-Team flick but the fight is finally set for May 29.

This will be the first UFC PPV event to be aired on the new Roku UFC channel for users of the device. Moving forward all UFC events will be offered and the Roku device will have archives of events and will show unaired preliminary fights.

I wonder if those prelim fights will be different from the ones typically shown on Spike ahead of UFC cards. Now that I think about it, the last couple UFC cards has had no prelims shown on Spike, I wonder if this deal has anything to do with that.

And if you haven’t heard of Rubber Ninjas, listen up: it’s a ragdoll fighting game. It’s just colorful dudes, with and without weapons, whacking the colorful blood spatters out of one another. If you’re not sure you’re into hilarious fighting games (are you sure you’re still breathing?), then you can check out the demo. The full version is $19.95, and you get the game for both Mac and PC.

To be specific here, we’re talking about Street Fighter II: Championship Edition, but who’s quibbling with a few extra characters? Not me! The game is available for browser play thanks to a partnership between Capcom and GameTap. It may be a little difficult with a keyboard, but did I mention that it was free? Because it’s free. Play it now.

If you want to be the proud owner, you better head on over to Etsy, since this is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Capcom today revealed a new chapter in the popular Street Fighter franchise, titled Street Fighter IV: A New Beginning.

Not much is known about the new game, except that the just released teaser trailer features some really beautiful 3D pen-and-ink style graphics, reminiscent of Okami.

It’s not known whether the graphical style will make it to the game, but I sure hope they do. Street Fighter loyalists are already complaining about the possibility of another 3D fighter, but I’ve never been a big fan of 2D sprite-based fighters anyhow.

The SF series has been getting a little long in the tooth, and it could use something dramatic to shake it up. Capcom hasn’t even revealed what platform(s) the game will be hitting, but my bet’s on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, although a PS3 exclusive isn’t out of the question.

(FWIW, It’s possible that the game will hit arcades before it hits consoles, dragging things out for as much as another year. Let’s hope not.)
