dante figure writes epic poems, then rips your arms off

This unpainted figure is supposed to be 14^th century poet Dante Alighieri. Dante was a lot of things: creative genius, devout Catholic, a man in love, a man in pain . . .

But he was certainly never a scythe-totin’, demon-slayin’ loose cannon veteran of the Crusades who doesn’t play by the rules.

I wish I were being facetious. In Visceral Games’ Dante’s Inferno, instead of lamenting over the death of Beatrice and writing some pretty epic poetry by the light of a fire, Dante – returning home from the Crusades – takes Death’s scythe and plunges into the Underworld to rescue Beatrice’s soul.

So it’s safe to assume that, as a student of English and Literature, I won’t be propping this interpretation of Dante up on my desk anytime soon. Not unless I want to totally ruin my scholarly cred. The worst part? The game, as a medium for play, is probably really fun. God of War-like. Too bad it’s dressed in disservice.

I’ll have a chance to play Dante’s Inferno at the Game X Industry Summit this weekend in Oaks, PA, so who knows. Maybe it will somehow, magically, offend less.

more like claylo: surprisingly adorable halo figures

A brave soul could come up with piles and piles of adjectives to lay upon the Halo franchise, but “cute” usually isn’t one that comes up (unless you’re talking about playing with the Grunt Birthday Party skull on). However, when you’re talking about clay Halo figures, “cute” is about all I can throw down, and that in between squeals of childlike delight.

Aww! I don’t even want to shoot them! But I could, you know. Or stick ‘em.

These clay cuties come courtesy of one Evan K., known hereafter as The Clay Master (Chief), especially since these aren’t his first specimens. All cuteness aside (and it’s tough to disregard), these little figures are pretty detailed. I do especially like the work he did on the Spartans.

horsey-version of ‘odin’ summon shows up at japanese toy show

Someone over at Square Enix must be a fan of Transformers. I say this because for some reason, all Final Fantasy’s classic “summons” now have alternate vehicle modes in Final Fantasy XIII. For example, Shiva is now summoned as two ladies who combine to form some sort of lesbian motorcycle. I kid you not. And Odin, it seems, transforms into a horse that Lightning can ride.

Said horsey-version of Odin was on display last weekend in figure form at Chara-Hobby, a figure and hobby show that was held in Chiba, Japan. Also on display were fully painted figures of Lightning, Vanille, Hope, Snow, and Sazh. In addition to the cast of Final Fantasy XIII, Chara-Hobby featured all kinds of anime figures, including a slew of overly sexualized anime girls. I’m not so big on the anime scene, though, so I couldn’t tell you who they are or what they’re from, so you’ll have to take a look for yourself.

Okay, so Final Fantasy keeps getting weirder and weirder. The peculiar nature of Final Fantasy aside, I’m still pumped for Final Fantasy XIII. And while I’m not big on collecting collectables, I do want a shiny statue of Lightning to grace my work desk, ‘cause grrrl power rocks.

Sorry, I spent my summer watching all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

even the flood looks good in this clay [halo]

The many enemies and races of the Halo universe are interesting enough in their own right, but these particular examples are way beyond the norm. Halo fan and clay genius Antithesis doesn’t create Halo figures. This is art.

These amazingly detailed figures show off the softer side of some of the most ferocious fighters you’ll find in a Halo game, including the Flood.

I hate the Flood. And yet, here? I want to touch it.

pink gundam: cute or stupid?

Here we go again. Pink Gundam with garish embellishments: cute or stupid? Does the existence of this no doubt unofficial model embarrass Giant Gundam? Or is it what the statue is looking for, the reason for his incessant head movements?

Is this Gundam with a taste for lace a noble ally? or could it be a fearsome foe? Is it cute or is it stupid?

the bioshock 2 love continues: custom big sister figure

We’re still months away from BioShock 2, but you’d never know it from the projects that have been cropping up in relation to the sequel. And while the Big Sister isn’t nearly as cute as the Big Daddy doll we’ve seen (which produces automatic “awws”), it’s still an incredible figure!

Looks pretty detailed, eh? Lots of work done? Keep in mind that this figure is less than four inches tall… and be impressed all over again. Projects like this take serious dedication. Check out the figure next to an image of the Big Sister:
