Nintendo is having a hard time for the first time in 30-years – as it eyes its first annual loss. The net loss is estimated to be about $264 million for the year that will end in March. Last year, the company made about that much in profit. The reason for the falling profits is not surprising.

Nintendo 3DS adoption has been very poor and much worse than anticipated by Nintendo. Even after the price cut, Nintendo is unable to sell sufficient quantities of the console. That is no surprise, considering the console launched before there was anything close to a robust game library available, and general market interest in 3D technology has been questionable at best.

The other problem for Nintendo is that the Japanese Yen is rising compared to other currencies. With the Yen worth more than other currencies, money made overseas is worth less on the books in Japan. Nintendo had a 52.4 billion Yen foreign exchange loss in the first half of the fiscal year.

Nintendo announced today some facts and figures from the 2006 holiday selling season, and the Big N racked up some pretty impressive numbers:

During the November – December holiday period, over half of all gaming systems sold in the U.S. were Nintendo brand products.

Nintendo sold every single Wii console that was shipped into retail channels the 44 days between launch and the end of the year. In total, over 1 million consoles were sold.

The Nintendo DS series sold another 1.6 million units in December, bringing its total to over 5.3 million units sold throughout 2006.

More than 86% of Wii purchasers also purchased The Legend of Zelda, meaning that over 900,000 copies of the game were sold. Another 600,000 copies of the GameCube version also were snatched up by shoppers.

On average, Wii owners each purchased three games (in addition to the pack in Wii Sports) over the holidays.

As a result of these extraordinary figures, Nintendo expects to announce record financial performance for the fiscal year which ends on March 31, 2007. Not too shabby for the house that Mario and Donkey Kong built.
