Before I discovered Google Chrome, I had always been a Mozilla Firefox girl. I disliked Internet Explorer because frankly, it made browsing websites a huge pain. Plus, you know, I loved that Firefox had all these plugins that you can install with a single mouse click.

I jumped to Firefox and still use it sometimes when my Chrome browser acts up. But when I saw this Firefox Icon Pillow, I just knew I either had to have it (or hint to someone that I wanted it, since it’s almost Christmas already anyway.)

I might be using another browser right now, but I will forever remember Firefox as the first browser that gave me an enjoyable surfing experience on the web. (So much drama for a browser, I know.)

The Firefox Icon Pillow is available from an Etsy shop appropriately called Icon Pillows for $19.99 (USD).

Mozilla just launched a new Gamepad API that will allow developers to use either USB or Bluetooth-connected gaming controllers with the Firefox browser. Not so you can scroll web pages with a PS3 or XBox 360 controller, but so that new cool games can be created. As if we don’t have enough games to play through already.

The idea is that this new Gamepad API will allow developers to make better games using the Firefox browser. Check out the video to watch some guy lovingly play with his controller as he watches the results onscreen. Riveting stuff.

Now you can play browser-based games with a real controller, not just your keyboard and mouse. This could change online web gaming for good. For more info hit up the Mozilla website.

My Halloween dress up duties have thankfully already passed, but for some people, the big night out is coming up this Saturday. This Halloween, I’ve seen some really interesting costumes, including this Mozilla Firefox costume. It actually looks cute, which is a bonus.

This costume is definitely one for geekettes and thankfully, it doesn’t look uncomfortable. Other than color coordination, a few elements make this a winner, thanks to the cute fox tail, ears, and make-up.

In my book, the trick to finding a good Halloween costume is to come up with something unique, but still comfortable, because you’ll most likely be spending hours sweating inside of it.

Caldwell Tanner is a cartoonist for College Humor and he made this great little cartoon comparing the different browsers to their equivalent modes of transportation…

I found this hilarious, especially when I saw what he chose to represent Firefox. I use Firefox as my main browser, but it’s true that it can quickly become overloaded if you use too many add-ons or extensions. A fresh install is always nice when those memory leaks start to bog you down.

I do use Chrome sometimes, especially if I don’t want to open all of my saved tabs in Firefox, I’ve also noticed that it’s pretty fast, though in my unscientific tests, it’s not faster than Firefox. Still, Chrome and Firefox are getting more and more extensions and add-ons.

Which browser do you use most? And don’t say Lynx.

Sony rolled out firmware v. 3.10 for the PS3 today, bringing Facebook integration to the system. Your boss will now know that you’ve been playing Pro Evo 2010 instead of writing your blog posts. Yay. Screw that, here’s something us PS3 owners can look forward to: a PlayStation Insider source who’s “very close to Sony” says that the company has been discussing the possibility of porting Mozilla’s increasingly bloated/ultra-versatile web browser on to their console. <— THIS, SONY. WE WANT THIS.

Before we commit ourselves to this future, note how doubly frail this gossamer tip is – it’s a rumor about a possibility. So it may be as real as Duke Nukem Forever (or do kids nowadays refer to GT 5?). But a gamer can dream, can’t he?

This is how things are in the browser world: Opera never recovered from its commercial days, Safari is… okay I guess, Firefox is customizable, Chrome is speedy, and Internet Explorer is owned by a powerful company with lots of money. Case in point: the big M is giving away $10,000 (USD) to a lucky (?) surfer willing to use Internet Explorer 8. That’s how they flounder roll at Redmond.

Yes, Microsoft is willing to pay you to use their browser. That’s all there is to it. Of course you could say that IE 8 isn’t necessarily as bad as the previous versions; it’s just that the browser’s reputation is so tarnished that people have to be given a little encouragement to try the latest spawn. Also, the ad that The Gadget Blog took a shot of must be an earlier version, as it is slightly more specific in terms of identifying who the IE 8′s archenemy is:

So how about it? Are you willing to join the hunt? Start here if you’re game. What? You want some tips? Let’s see: the instructions say that the prize in hidden is “a cleverly concealed webpage that only Internet Explorer 8 can view.” Hmmm. Well then I bet the prize is hidden in something like this. Either that or a page within the Windows Update site.

One more thing: wouldn’t it be funny though if someone using the IE Tab extension on Firefox found the hidden webpage? Or if we find out that Windows 7 will be sold for $10,001? Or…nah I’m all out.

The beta version of Safari 4 is now available for download. I’m actually using it as I write this post, and while it is quite stable and fast, it’s not going to replace Firefox as my default browser anytime soon. I’ll tell you why later, but if you’re a Firefox user you probably know my reasons. For now let’s take a brief look at the features that Apple are flaunting.

First off is Top Sites, a modified version of Opera’s Speed Dial. Like Speed Dial, Top Sites displays links in the form of previews of websites arranged in a grid; up to 24 previews can be displayed. Top Sites’ advantage over Speed Dial is that it tells you if any of the previewed websites have been updated by displaying a blue star on the upper right corner of the websites’ preview.

You can also “pin” a website to it’s current position so you’ll always know where to look for it. As cool as it looks, for me Top Sites needs to be tweaked: you can remove websites from the grid at anytime, but for some reason you can’t manually add websites like in Speed Dial.

Top Sites has to “learn” which websites you frequently visit. Bookmarks are enough for me, but since my 6-year old niece also uses my Mac to surf the net, it would have been nice if I could just click on existing previews and replace them by typing in the URL of the websites that she likes so she doesn’t have to do the typing.

Safari did not escape Apple’s Cover Flow mania, although this time it’s actually quite useful because it’s used to scan not only through your bookmarks but through your browsing history as well. It’s a great way to look up the tab of any obscure blog or website that you accidentally closed, and you can look at a page without having to load it again.

Safari 4′s Full History Search can even recognize captions, so for instance if you’re looking for a certain picture but you don’t want to flip through hundreds of previews, you can type in the picture’s caption and Safari will look for the page for you.

The next feature is immediately noticeable as soon as you open a new tab: Chrome’s tab-on-top look has rubbed off on Safari. You can snicker all you want, but the set-up really makes sense and makes you wonder why the developers of Firefox didn’t think of it before anyone else.

As you can see, having the tabs on top of the browser is less distracting, and it also frees up a significant amount of viewing space. Hackintosh Netbook owners will certainly thank Apple for that extra space. But like Top Sites, in my opinion this new (for Safari) feature still needs to improved.

You see, by moving the tabs to the top of the window, they also become the area that you drag to move the entire window. This quickly becomes annoying because whereas in Firefox you can click anywhere on a tab to drag and drop it to a new location, in Safari you have to click at the tab’s “handle” - the tiny triangle on the right side edge of a tab – before you can drag and drop the tab. If you click anywhere else you’ll just end up moving the whole window, which is what happens when you click the “forehead” of any window, whether in OS X or in Windows.

Speaking of Windows, Safari now sports native interfaces on its Vista and XP versions.

Here’s the XP version:

Finally, Safari 4 uses a new browser engine that Apple has dubbed “Nitro”. Here’s what Apple has to say about the Nitro: “Using the new Nitro Engine, for example, Safari executes JavaScript up to 30 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and more than 3 times faster than Firefox 3 based on performance in leading industry benchmark tests: iBench and SunSpider. In addition to superior JavaScript performance, Safari offers top-flight HTML performance — the best on any platform — loading pages 3 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and almost 3 times faster than Firefox 3.”

Personally I didn’t notice any significant difference between the load times of sites in Firefox 3 and in Safari 4. But Safari 4 is fast and really stable for a beta. Okay so it’s not really stable, but it’s stable. I actually had to switch to Firefox to finish this article, because when I clicked the “insert hyperlink” button on WordPress, Safari rendered the pop up window (where the url is typed in) behind the black veil that also pops up when you click the button. The black veil blocks input to everything else except to the pop up window, but since Safari put the pop up window behind the veil as well, I couldn’t enter the hyperlink and I got stuck with the stupid veil. Hooray for auto save. So is Safari 4 beta good enough to be a default browser? I say try it out yourselves. You can download Safari 4 beta here.

But even if Apple manages to fix the things I complained about, I’m still not going to use the final version of Safari 4 as my default browser. Why? No add-ons. Apple still has time to fix Top Sites and the tab dragging, but without things like Noscript, Flashblock, Adblock Plus, Download Statusbar, Better GReader, Better Youtube – I could go on and on – I’ll always think of Safari as a backup browser. IE, on the other hand, should only be used once: on fresh installs, to download Firefox.

It’s free and it’s incredibly easy to install and use and it’s probably going to ruin my life because I can’t stop playing with it. It requires only a one-time, 5-second download to have a sidebar chock full o’ NES goodness.

The FireNes site is in Spanish; here is a not-too-terrific English translation. Go to the Tools menu and click on FireNes. It will pull up a menu of any game. Right click on the game to edit options and learn which keys to use.

You’re lucky I even wrote this post considering I’ve spent the last 3 hours “researching” the subject matter. And by “researching” of course I mean re-mastering Q-Bert and amassing coins in Mario-land- because they have a bunch of retro games on there in addition to the NES favorites.

Almost a year ago a RedPost made news with their hackable Linux picture frame, the RedPost/Kit. Today, the guys at RedPost announced Kit’s better, faster, stronger kid brother, the Signbeta.

While it certainly can be used as a digital picture frame, RedPost’s real mission is to replace wasteful paper-covedred bulletin boards with an electronic version. Pretty much anything that can run in Firefox can be displayed as a Sign.

Like its predecessor, the Signbeta packs a substantial 19-inch LCD screen and looks great hanging on a wall. But this year’s model runs much faster, has 4-times as much memory and comes in a sexy polished aluminum case. Oh yeah, it also is ready to go out of the box.

Within minutes of plugging in the Signbeta, you’ll be up and running. It runs RedPost’s Wicker, a customized version of Ubuntu Linux which boots off a USB flash drive.

The $599 system is powered by a speedy VIA C7-D 1.5 GHz NanoBGA2 Processor, and has 1GB of memory this time out. Under the hood, there’s a VIA UniChrome Pro AGP graphics chipset to power the display. Connectivity is provided by built-in 802.11b/g wireless networking, as well as 10/100 Ethernet, USB 2.0 and PS/2 ports.

You can check out all the details over on the RedPost website. Let the hacking begin!
