It’s been quite a wait and last month we had word that the new 3DS firmware would be delayed until December 8th, which is tomorrow. But now Nintendo has finally unveiled the version 3.0.0 system update a day early for eager 3DS owners. So what does this update bring with it?

Well, you get 3D video recording and DLC features as well as StreetPass improvements, support for the 3DS-to-3DS transfer service and more. There’s even a new Nintendo Zone to interact with when connected to certain Wi-Fi hotspots. It’s worth booting up your console and updating to check it all out.

The update is free of charge and easy to install directly on your 3DS handheld.

Sony has just officially announced the upcoming release of their new PlayStation 3 (PS3) Slim console during their press conference at GamesCom 2009.

The new PS3 Slim console sports a compact new form-factor, and a lower price to go with it. Priced at $299.99 (USD), €299, and ¥29,980, the PS3 Slim is $100 bucks cheaper than the previous model.

The PS3 Slim will ship with a spacious 120GB hard drive, and is 32% smaller than the previous models. As an added bonus, it consumes 34% less power too. And while the box shot below was leaked a long time ago, it looks like it was the real deal:

I’m none to thrilled with the cheaper looking case design, but if that’s what it takes to get the size and price down to size, I suppose it’s worth it. And I won’t miss the fingerprints.

In addition, Sony also announced the impending release of the their new v3.0 firmware for all PlayStation 3 models. Here’s a sneak preview of what’s new in the 3.0 firmware for those of you who care:

No word yet on a release date for the v3.0 firmware, but Sony says that it should be released “soon”.

You can now pre-order the PS3 Slim over on Amazon for $299.99 (USD).

Or a few punches in the face. Playboy21 of psp-hacks has cooked up a tiny program he calls TrickBrick.

If one of your n00b friends owns a PSP, offer to upgrade their firmware. Put TrickBrick into their memory stick’s GAME folder, select it from the game menu and voila. It displays a bricked screenshot:

Next, say “Oh shit oh shit oh shit”. Carry on the charade for as long as you can. Just make sure you can run very fast. Good times.

Whee. Sony is rolling out yet another firmware upgrade for the PlayStation 3 console.

The impending version 1.80 upgrade adds a couple of new features, but the most significant one purportedly adds upscaling of DVD, Playstation and PlayStation 2 games to as much as 1080p resolution. I’m very interested to see how this all works, especially to see if the game upscaling works on US and Japan (hardware backwards compatible) consoles or only on the European (emulation-based) versions of the system.

In addition, the new release will add remote PSP play across the internet, and playback of media content stored on DLNA3 (Digital Living Network Alliance V3) enabled PCs and other devices.

The update should start rolling out on May 24th (at least in Europe). Sony’s PS3 system update page should have more details once the firmware is released.

Given the current dearth of games for Sony’s big black box, I’m beginning to feel like I spend more time downloading firmware updates than actually playing games.
