What was the last thing you bought at a vending machine? A can of soda? A magazine? A bike? A gold nugget? Live bait? Woman’s Day’s Brynn Mannino made a list of some of the weirdest vending machines we have today. The weird thing about the list is that Japan’s entry is so lame as it’s not really a vending machine but an elaborate advertisement. Boo. Here are some of the legit ones:

The Bike Dispenser first came out in 2005 in Eindhoven, Netherlands. It’s actually a renting machine – users have to return the bike to the nearest dispenser at their destination. The bikes are equipped with RFID tags that allows the company to track the bikes, in case people forget that they left their rented bike at home. We do that sometimes.

Gold-to-go is, as you may have guessed, a vending machine that sells gold. It sells 1g, 5g and 10g gold bullion as well as Krugerrand gold coins. TG-Gold-Super-Markt, makers of the gold vending machine, tells us that the bullion and coins are intended to be given as presents and not forms of investment. Still, I don’t think this type of vending machine will last more than a day here in the Philippines. This thing would pillaged in hours.

And from Pennsylvania comes the Live Bait & Tackle vending machine. Yup, a vending machine that sells organisms. That will soon be fed to bigger organisms. You think PETA approves of this? Check out the other 5 vending machines at Woman’s Day.

The Humminbird RF35 uses GPS technology to allow its user to “see” where the fishes are in an easy to read, Game and Watch-style wrist mounted LCD display. Its remote sonar sensor can detect fishes within a 75-foot radius up to a depth of 120 feet.

It really is the perfect gift for bears. Or for people who love fishing. Or for bears. I think we should have bear friends for a change.

Buy one for your fisherman friend and he’ll surely give you a bear hug. Buy one for your bear friend and he might, I don’t know, growl in gratitude.

The first release of the iPhone game Flick Fishing got rave reviews. Now Freeverse, the creators of Flick Fishing, are adding even more fishing fun with version 1.2 of the game.

Aside from new fish and new fishing spots, the update also brings a tournament mode to the game. In tournament mode, players can compete against the computer, against another player on the same iPhone/iPod Touch, or even via Wi-Fi versus other flick fishermen.

For those who are unfamiliar with the game, Flick Fishing is an intuitive and beautiful fishing game. Players have to find the right combination of bait, location and flicking & reeling techniques that works with each type of fish. It definitely does not get its name from the fact that players cast the line with just a flick of their wrist. Nope. Do you know why it’s called Flick Fishing?

Like all iPhone/iPod Touch apps, Flick Fishing is available at Apple’s App Store for $0.99. Honestly I don’t know how it plays, because I don’t have an iPhone, but Freeverse has a video demo over at their site so go check that out if you’re interested.

Here’s another silly accessory for your Nintendo Wii controller. It’s a fishing rod that snaps on to your Wii-mote so you can feel more immersed when you’re catching digital fish in those weird fishing simulation games.

The Dragon Electronics Fishing Rod Advance includes a retractable rod and fishing line, and even comes with a plastic fish that you can stick on the end of the line. Why you’d throw out the rod with a fish already attached is anyone’s guess, but if you’re using your Wii to catch fish in the first place, you’re probably a bit of a kook anyhow. If only you could cook up those virtual fish you catch when you’re playing Cooking Mama, you’d be set.

If you’re just dying to snag yourself some fake fish can pick one up from console shop Divineo for $9.95.

Real Motion Fishing for the Nintendo Wii will ship with a goofy looking fishing rod attachment for the Wii’s controller. While the Wii-mote will be used as the fishing rod, you’ll rapidly “reel in” the line by using your Nunchuk controller.

HOOKED! claims to offer a totally realistic fishing experience (let’s hope it’s better than the silly fishing exercises in Zelda) including photorealistic bodies of water with lots of aquatic life to pluck. The game will include online multi-player, and three single player modes as well (Practice, Time Attack and Tournament.)

It’ll cost about $59 when it comes out this September, which is $10 more than most Wii games, presumably to cover the cost of the controller add on. Bait not included.
