Last month, Xbox 360 users were finally given the option to transfer their user data to a flash drive. Note that you can use any flash drive for this purpose, but that won’t stop companies like SanDisk from releasing “official” Xbox 360 flash drives. SanDisk’s drives are pre-formatted for use with an Xbox 360, sure, but you can easily do that with any flash drive and an Xbox 360 in seconds. The only significant difference between these Microsoft-approved drives and other flash drives is that SanDisk is throwing in a free 1-month Xbox Live Gold subscription, which you may or may not need.

But wait, there’s more: if you purchase one of these directly from SanDisk, you get a free lanyard! WOW. So yeah, you can order the SanDisk Xbox 360 Flash Drive at SanDisk’s website; the 8GB version sells for $35 (USD) while the 16 GB version sells for $70. If you’re going for the 16GB version, Amazon is selling it for $5 less. No lanyard though *cough*no one cares*cough*. Or you can buy a plain ol’ 16GB flash drive for $32 at Newegg. Your choice.

…or something like that. The point is, this flash drive is as secure as Maid Marian’s chastity belt. Other password-protected flash drives use software for authentication. Anyone who’s watched a Hollywood flick that involves computers knows that software can be easily hacked just by furiously typing on the keyboard until the big-ass “ACCESS DENIED” in bright red is replaced by an equally big-ass green “ACCESS GRANTED” on the computer screen. In other words, software can be hacked. That’s why, aside from using 256-bit AES hardware encryption, Lok-It’s flash drives have hardware authentication.

Users must enter the correct PIN by using the keypad on the flash disk before they can access the data within the flash drive. Without the correct PIN, a computer won’t even recognize that the flash drive is attached to it. The flash drive also automatically locks when it’s removed from a USB port. Since the Lok-It flash drive doesn’t rely on software for encryption, it’s compatible with most operating systems.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The guys at Lok-It sure know how to project security. I got absolutely nothing from that man’s presentation; his delivery was stealthy and possibly even spoken in an alien language. Check out Lok-It’s website for more information or if you want to order their flash drives.

To celebrate the insanely popular Hello Kitty’s 35th anniversary, Sanrio teamed up with mimoco to come up with a flash drive cartoon character named Hey Flashy. I’m just kidding, of course they came up with Hello Kitty MIMOBOTs. Although I think one of the designs went too far:

It’s Hello Kitty wearing a Hello Kitty suit. Either that or it’s a Hello Kitty monster with Hello Kitty’s head in its mouth. Either way this needs less kittens. Fortunately there are other, less mind-boggling designs.

You can buy the Hello Kitty MIMOBOT flash drives at mimoco’s online shop. The 2 GB flash drive sells for $25 (USD), the 4 GB sells for $35, and the 8 GB sells for $50. I’ll wait for the Keyboard Cat MIMOBOT.

Hey kids! Meet T-Rex. He may be small – 6″ x 2.5″ x 6″ – for a dinosaur, but he’s willing to protect your files. And with those big claws and teeth, not even Swiper will risk the wrath of T-Rex!

Unfortunately he’ll have to be decapitated before you can save your data.

He also has a prehistoric storage capacity, a measly 2 GB. But I bet that’s more than enough to carry all your stuff. And since the actual flash disk is wrapped inside his head, you don’t have to take his entire body with you.

So go and tell mom and dad to buy you one from robotbaby at Etsy for only $28 (USD). Tell them “This is a great way for me to be introduced to the world of computers and learn the perks of flash storage as well as the value of regularly backing up my data!” Eh what the hell. You probably know how to download from Usenet already.

As always, cutting edge tech ain’t cheap: the “Buy” links in Kingston’s website all come up empty, so I’m assuming the Data Traveler 300 is not available yet, but Hardware Sphere and Gizmodo both claim that the flash disk will sell for about $900 (USD). For comparison’s sake, you can get a 320 GB external hard drive for about $70. Even Western Digital’s 4 TB My Book external hard drive is much cheaper at $700. But I guess there are people who are willing to pay for the small form factor.

Someone – I forgot who – once said that politics is “showbiz for ugly people.” Well the United States of America beg to differ, as they now have a leader whose charms are so far above Hollywood levels that he makes betting on the NCAA Final Four absolutely bewitching, even to yours truly, a Filipino who doesn’t even care about basketball in general. The American media goes crazy when his family gets a dog, or when his wife manages to change her clothes inside a gigantic airplane. How indeed did she pull that off?

Since we can’t get enough of combining President Obama with everything except things actually related to his job, let’s all buy this Obama flash drive from Active Media Products. The 2 GB USB drive features a holographic image of the 44th American President and an hour’s worth of speeches – his Inaugural Address and “Race Speech” - in mp3 format.

You can get the Obama flash drive at Amazon for $9 USD.

LaCie have made it their mission to come up with creative and entertaining products that allow customers to unintentionally destroy or misplace their data as easily as possible. After releasing their coin-shaped CurrenKey flash-drives, LaCie now present to us flash drives that look like keys. Prepare to lose data in the name of industrial design.

The iamaKey is the tough cooKey in the bunch. It’s water- and scratch-resistant, and its protective edges ensure that you’ll never insert the drive with the wrong side up, but it won’t prevent you from attempting to do so anyway. It will also not prevent you from trying to start your car with it after a beer or six.

The iamaKey comes in 4Gb and 8Gb versions. The 4Gb costs $18 USD while the 8Gb costs $28 USD. If iamaKey is a flash drive for the toughies, there’s itsaKey, a flash drive for trendy people. itsaKey is weirdly shaped, and it offers less protection compared to iamaKey. Trendy indeed.

It’s not exactly fragile because it’s coated with nickel, but there’s no mention of water- or scratch-resistance on its product page. The upside is that itsaKey is cheaper. The 4Gb version costs $15 USD and the 8Gb costs $24 USD. Rounding out the product line is PassKey, a useful little fella that eats your microSD cards, essentially turning them into USB drives.

In other words, PassKey is a microSD card reader, not a flash disk. It has no data capacity of its own. But if you have a bunch of old microSD cards then you only have to shell out $10 USD for the PassKey. Transfer speeds will obviously be slower on the PassKey: it only goes up to 40Mbits/s compared to 480Mbits/s max on the iamaKey and itsaKey.

You can buy all three at LaCie’s shop; I’ve linked the product names to their corresponding product pages. I see a LaCie imaPieceofTrashKey in the future.

It’s also what the Bone Collector does. It might also be one of those processes shown in CSI, the boring ones shortened to a couple of scenes accompanied by savvy and dark background music.

Going back to the Taiwanese brand, they have this line of flash disks which are called Bone Drivers, which are flash drives encased in removable silicone shells that are shaped like bone collections bones or dinosaurs or penguins or pandas. But since bones are boring and do not result in lawsuits, Bone Collection decided to make silicone shells that are shaped like the iPhone.

Awwww. You think they’re happy? Sleepy? Freaked that they suddenly have eyes and feet?

There’s still no word on the price or the capacity of the flash disk, but a quick peek at X-treme Geek, Bone Collection’s American distributor, will show you that the other flash disk versions sell for $20 (USD) for the 2GB and $30 for the 4GB capacity disks. Here’s Bone Collection’s diagram in case you still don’t quite get the gimmick:

Take Out, Take In, New Driver. Is is Major Easy.

Unfortunately the iPhone design isn’t available at X-treme Geek yet. An iPod shell is also available, but that’s so passé, so I didn’t bother posting about that. Also, the iPod case’s pics are low res and ugly.

If you live outside of America look at Bone Collection’s list of affiliates so you can check if the iPhone flash disk is already available in your country.

I can’t decide whether these things are awesomely offensive or offensively awesome. Imm Living‘s east and west Hand Sign USB flash disks lets people flaunt their allegiance even if your only territory is a 5 x 5 cubicle.

The picture above makes for a great wallpaper. The larger version anyway. I really don’t know what to say. Here’s another shot:

Umm… Eastside wins height-wise, at 89mm against the West’s 85mm. But! but but but. The West is thicker at 35mm compared to the East’s 17mm. And they’re both 2Gb and will be sold for $35 starting this March. So. It’s a tie. Peace.

There are two other hand signs, Change and Rock Out. Should’ve written about them instead.

The C-3PO Mimobot is 2.5″ tall (2.49999″ head + 0.00001″ body) by 1″ wide. Like other Mimobots, this one also comes with the mimoByte Sound Software, so you’ll hear some of C-3PO’s classic lines whenever you remove or insert the flash disk. It’s available at mimoco’s online store; price starts at $30 USD for the 1Gb model.

I saw this comic strip where everything that the characters needed for camping – pots, pans, tents, sleeping bags, bonfire, even a fridge – was tucked inside a swiss knife. It’s funny, sure, but it would really be neat if there were Swiss knives like that, ala Dragonball‘s capsules. Victorinox‘ Presentation Pro doesn’t have a fridge in it, but it does have Bluetooth and a flash disk with fingerprint authentication.

There are three available flash disk capacities: 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB. Data stored in the Pro’s disk will be protected by 256-bit hardware encryption. Aside from the boring scissors, nail file, screwdriver, knife and key ring, the Presentation Pro also has a laser pointer and two buttons for “navigating slide shows.” Just what you need for those emergency Powerpoint shows in the garage or out in the jungle. Or wherever it is that adventurer handymen hangout.

Seriously though this is some sweet stuff. The Bluetooth is said to have a range of 100 feet. The flash disk also comes with software for things like backup and Outlook syncing. As you can see it’s detachable, very practical. We can see that Victorinox, who are celebrating their 125th anniversary this year, are keeping up with the times and are not just cramming random stuff into their army knives. Ben Heck would probably find this useful. Or not. I heard he uses ninjutsu to come up with his mods.

Prices for the Presentation Pro will range from $170 to $335 (USD), depending on specs. There’s also a Flight variant that doesn’t have the scissors and the knife so it won’t be confiscated at airports. I want a Camping variant.

USB flash disks are very popular not only because they carry a lot of data in such a small size. They’ve also become a hit because they come in all sorts of weird designs. It’s reached a point where if I see something small and weird I assume that it’s a flash disk. Sometimes I think my toes are flash disks. Anyway. Designer Windell Oskay came up with a flash disk that doesn’t mimic fruits, insects, or Chinese barbecues but still manages to be one of the weirdest flash disks ever.

The Hacked! USB flash disk will surely have everyone asking you if you lost something, perhaps a printer or an external hard drive, with its frayed and torn cable design.

The drive can carry 2GB worth of data. Just don’t leave it lying around; people might think it’s what it looks like and throw it away.

Also, if a friend of yours owns one of these, please please please switch it with an actual torn USB cable. Then tell us what happens.

You can get the Hacked! USB flash drive for $50 (USD) at Generate Design.

They come in various Santa designs too, although they’re not particularly admirable or cute.

Santa’s data-belly capacity ranges from 64MB to 8GB, so if you want to save money you can buy a bunch of lower capacity ones as gifts. Unfortunately the manufacturer’s site doesn’t have prices, but it does say that the disks are covered by a 3-year warranty. Also, worst title ever. I’m sorry.
