If you have a few old vintage cameras that are collecting dust, you might want to do what Flickr user Jason Hull has done. Jason takes vintage cameras from the 1950s and 1960s and turns them into retro nightlights. Don’t worry, he doesn’t hurt rare cameras or cameras that are in pristine condition – just the heavily mass produced ones.

There’s something about the idea of vintage cameras turned into nightlights that appeals to the kid in me. Anything that keeps those monsters at bay is a good thing, whether they are under the bed or in the closet. But will these scare both vintage and new monsters or just the vintage ones?

A digital camera is essentially something you use to take photos or record videos. You can also review the images you’ve already taken simply with the flick of a switch or with the push of a button.

So in that sense, the Blind Camera isn’t really a camera at all, but the way it works and operates is pretty cool. As you can see, there are no lenses or anything, but there is a big red button that’s just screaming out for you to push it. Once you do, a cellphone that’s built into the Blind Camera unit retrieves a photo from Flickr that was taken at the exact second. Pretty cool, right?

Sascha Pohflepp is the man behind the faux camera, which is on display as part of his Blinks and Buttons art exhibit. He explains his inspiration for creating such a piece:

Taking a photo means making a memory. Choosing a moment in time and framing a situation. Archiving it or making it public. Either way, we create a visual item that we have an emotional attachment to through our memory. Photos help us to remember moments in our past. Often they even become a memory in their own right. For many, making their moments public through services like Flickr is already part the process of photography itself, creating archives which contain a vast collection of visual fragments of individual lives.

While I’ve never thought about using emotions to browse the Internet, apparently Emotiv EPOC’s brain-reading headset will do the trick for you. Combined with the EmoLens app, the EEG headset can detect up to four different emotions. Depending on how you feel, photos will be tagged differently.

If you tired of a machine judging your emotions, then you can use a combinations of concentration states, blinks, and shakes of your head to control the browsing and tagging process.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The EPOC neuroheadset is designed to let you control your computer with your mind. It actually not only detects brain signals, but also has a gyroscope on board for detecting your position as well.

The Emotiv EPOC and EmoLens app are currently available for purchase. The headset will set you back $300 (USD) while the app will cost you $40. Flickr is only one of the applications available for the headset, there are several others here. While this all sounds a bit strange, controlling your computer with your mind and small head and facial movements could make be helpful for the physically-challenged.

So this is definitely not the first Xbox 360 cake that has ever been made. But I’ve never seen a cake artist with the cojones to make one that stands in on its side, instead of in horizontal mode.

The appropriately named Christin and Justin Baker of North Carolina’s Christin’s Cakes managed to figure out how to bake an Xbox 360 cake that plays in vertical mode. There’s even an accompanying 360 controller, complete with dropped sugar buttons and a “disco dust” X button. Now I think the way they pulled it off is by building not so much a cake, but using the old pastry artist’s trick of sculpting it out of Rice Krispie treats, coated with sheets of smooth fondant icing.

So maybe it’s not as tasty as good old yellow cake and buttercream, but it’s still a serious Xbox Achievement in my humble opinion. And while you’re over at Christin’s flickr page, be sure to check out this appetizing cake. Where were you guys back on Halloween?

And while the cake is fully edible (black icing, gumpaste ghosts and all) you might not want to try and eat the Pac-Couple – as they’re crafted from Super Sculpey.

What do you get when you’ve got a crapload of Rubik’s cubes lying around the house, and some serious artistic talent? You make some major pixel art, that’s what.

These Rubik’s pixel portraits by Irish artist John Quigley are truly mind-boggling. Not only did he have to map out the precise pixel positions for each cube in these creations, he had to rotate the sides of each cube into exactly the correct color scheme to make it all work. To put it all in perspective, the Space Invaders scene above required a whopping 1,330 cubes.

And while Sonic only took 784 cubes to get his spiky blue hairdo, he’s still cool in my book. Not all of John’s creations require hundreds or even thousands of cubes either. Check out this Pac-Man scene, created from just 102 cubes – it still gets the point across just fine.

And Mario is no less fun, even though he only consumed 24 Rubik’s Cubes.

For obvious reasons, I’m drawn to his retro video game pixel creations, but I couldn’t leave you guys without showing you John’s unbelievable 2,622 cube portrait of Barack Obama.

Ever wonder what sort of stuff was running through the electronic brain of your Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner? These wonderful time-lapse photos should give you a pretty good idea of what your Roomba has been up to.

These amazing photographs were made by strapping a colored LED to the top of Roomba vacuums and then capturing extra-long exposure photos (known as “light paintings”). It’s sort of like looking at a neon Spirograph and spider web rolled into one. I’ve posted a few of my favorites in the gallery below…

Bento box maker extraordinaire Laura Bento created this edible Xbox 360 controller meal for her husband. The Xbox 360 bento box was made from many items not found in a conventional Xbox 360 – including seedless cucumbers, grapes, japanese yam cakes, egg white, star jelly pudding and teriyaki-flavored SPAM among other delicacies. But the main element – the controller – is made from good old jasmine rice.

And if you do find yams and lunchmeat stuffed into the DVD tray of your 360, don’t blame me. I didn’t do it.

Yeah, yeah. I don’t remember playing PONG on my C64 either, and it’s not as sleek or modern as that MacBook Pro cake, but this retro computer cake actually looks much tastier, IMHO. According to Flickr contributor Andy’s Retro Computers, it most definitely was yummy. Unfortunately you can’t have any – unless you happen to live in the UK, your name is Andy and your wife makes you one like it for your birthday too.

Shortly after hearing about HP’s Photosmart Premium with Web Touch, the world’s first printer to have its own apps, we now have Vizio announcing that their high end XVT (Extreme Vizio Technology, if you were wondering) line of LCD HDTVs will have their own internet apps as well. Yes, this is what HDTVs are for: Twitter and Facebook in 1080p. The internet-ready XVT line can connect via Ethernet or WiFi (802.11n dual-band), and will come with “a customized Bluetooth universal remote control with sliding QWERTY keyboard for easy thumb-typing.” Sweet.

Vizio has already confirmed the support of several content and service providers aside from Facebook and Twitter, such as eBay, Flickr, Netflix and Vudu. Currently, the only XVT series on sale is the 55″ VF550XVT LCD HDTV. You can order one at Amazon for $1899 (USD), or at Vizio’s online store for $2000.

The 42″ SV421XVT and 47″ SV471XVT HDTVs will be available in July for $1,200 and $1,500 respectively. If you were hoping for relatively cheaper XVTs, you’re in luck: The 32″ SV320XVT will be available in September, featuring a thin profile and full 1080p goodness for “only” $750. The 37″ SV370XVT ($850) will also be on sale in September, along with the LED-backlit 55″ VF551XVT ($2,200). Check out Vizio’s press release for more info as well as the complete roster of XVT series. Whew. Typing is exhausting.

Pixel baker extraordinaire Hello Naomi is at it again with her video game baked goods. This time, they’re adorned with the 8-bit aliens who ate so many of our quarters way back when. I suppose it’s our turn to get back at them by biting their heads off. Mmmm, alien frosting.

Naomi has also been responsible for cranking out such wonderful video game delicacies as these Pac-Man, Super Mario and LEGO cupcakes.

You can check out all of Naomi’s too-good-looking-to-eat treats over on her Flickr Photostream. Now, I must go eat something sweet and play a game.

When I think of Origami, I usually think of little paper swans, or maybe the unicorn that Edward James Olmos made in Blade Runner. But who says that video games can’t get in on the paper foldin’ action?

Individually cut and folded by Flickr contributor Lidia F. (aka “This Fffire“), these tiny Power Stars look just like their doppelgangers from the Super Mario game series (other than the defective ones with faces in the upper right corner). Lidia says she was inspired by Super Mario 64, so clearly she hasn’t upgraded her console in a while!

Each little Power Star is made from a single strip of paper, then hand-painted with yellow acrylics and embellished with some Sharpie eyeballs. Now, I can’t really figure out how in the heck she managed to make these, but if you’re out there reading this post, feel free to share some tips so we can all make hundreds of these tiny stars.

Check out this tasty realization of the classic Apple rainbow logo, made entirely out of fresh fruit.

Richard Thomas’ clever creation is made from sliced kiwis, bananas, oranges, strawberries, green and red grapes and blueberries.
Ironically, not a single apple found its way into the picture.

Crocheted by Flickr member SheriB626, the handmade throw is plenty big enough to cover up even the most die-hard couch potato. Sheri describes the intricately crafted blanket as “My most epic project to date. Made for someone I loved very much, who then broke my heart. The only thing I asked him to give back was this. Damn straight.”

It’s a sad tale of love, loss, heartbreak and video games… and of course Sheri gets extra points for using my favorite word, “Epic”. Sheri, I’m sure there’s a dedicated Tetris fan somewhere out there who will truly appreciate your efforts and never leave you for Columns or Lumines.
